Adventure Related Talk & Chat / BASS 2
Wed 19/05/2004 01:10:17
Well I was reading through the UK magazine PC Gamer today and came across a small article that was talking about a BASS 2 in development. It said that an idea to make it was ebing discussed but couldn't confirm much. Anyway, I don't know if this has been mentioned before but this has got me all excited :)

Advanced Technical Forum / Scripting Sequence

Well, what I'm trying to do is have an object to appear, move across the screen, then disappear and become an invenotry item, but it doesn;t seem to want to move.

Here's my script:

ObjectOn(2);
MoveObject(2,134, 69,4);
Wait(25);
ObjectOff(2);
AddInventory(4);

What seems to be wrong, why won't things run in order and wait to finish before moving to the next.

General Discussion / Thought of the week...
Thu 01/04/2004 12:20:37
With the rapid growth of broadband and the abilitty to download more music and movies than ever before Digital Piracy is becoming a real big issue.

Every time a new form of copy protection is found someone manages to break it, such as creating CD's to not play on computers could be overcome by using a marker pen to cover the outer ring of the disk!

The only way for music companies to compete is on the same terms by making music easy to get hold of and cheap to buy.

Will Record Industry attempts to stop the swapping of music online ever work?

What are your views on digital piracy and what are your concerns on such matters as this?

Hey there, I've been looking around for a way to set a coutner up in a room. I want it to initially display 3 minutes in the top right hand corner and count down to 0, after which it will display a message telling you that you have died unless you have completed the puzzle.

I think I may have the timer sorted out:

 if (interface==COUNTDOWN) {
   int counter = 300;
 while (counter > 0) {
   counter =-1;
 }

But how do I get it to check whether a puzzle is completed and if not display the end result of GAME OVER, and how do I keep the time displayed to the user?

Thanks

How do I get this to work?

Hi there, long time no post in here, but i'm having some problems, I need to run an IF statement asking if the player character is on walkable area 1 or 2 and depending on what walkable area the character is on depends on which object shows up, 1 or 0.

Object One should appear if the character is on area 1
Object Zero should appear if the character is on area 2

any help here?

Competitions & Activities / March MAGS

What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website

Why should I enter MAGS?
BECAUSE I SAID SO... k!

joking

I'm not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the net month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theme- Alterantive Perspective

So you don't like playing the good guy all the time, well try these rules set by ElaineMc

No restriction on colour depth or resolution.

- Tell the story from the villain's point of view.
- Some kind of underground location should be used.

Inventory items / objects [pick at least two]:
- necklace
- laundry
- a large sum of money
- a crossbow
- perfume bottle
- fire extinguisher
- church altar
- straw hat
- pentacle

If you're having trouble getting inspired, I strongly recommend checking out the Page of Generators, at http://seventhsanctum.com/gens/index.html.

In a crime-infested city of deception, in a time of devils, an exorcist attempts to solve the ultimate crime....

... I looked around for the old Irish song where my name originated from...

http://ingeb.org/songs/misterpa.html

If anyone is interested in the "Origins of Magintz", this was a song my parents used to tell me, they replaced the words Paddy and Gazzy as my name is Gary (a shortened form being Gaz, Gaza or Gazzy as a "cute" baby type name) So my parents have called me McGinty since I was a baby, and the name "Magintz" is a altered, more modern and "fun" version... hope you enjoyed my tale... and the sad part is.... it's true...

Well? What do you think it takes to make a decent adventure game, what do you like to see?

- Plot twists
- Incredibly hard puzzles
- Humour
- Monkeys

What are your suggestions that add to a perfect adventure game?

Decided to release rules early, have fun, and congrats to GinnyW:- enjoy the rules

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theme- Outdoors

-The game must take place on the outside (i.e. not inside a building, could be a street, could be a forest, could be both or anything else. underground places are also acceptable) for almost all/all the game.
-Most of the game must take place in the past or the future (any time but present). Not 3 minutes ago, unless it's really different. A small part may take place in the present if needed.
-There can be an element of time travel if you wish.
-There must be at least one easter egg in the game (any kind, even a reference). Just as long is it's not too minor. Also, if it's hard to find somehow, even better.
-There must be at least one animated background (something small is good enough).
-There need to be 2 inventory items (that come into play somewhere) out of this list:
cheese
a lamp
an oversized hat
vitamins
a bent spoon
a handle/knob from something
an engine
a brain
leaves
lemon
a toy mouse
something carved out of wood
a strange device
a costume
some popcorn (in any form)
a boot/boots
a 2-pound bucket of plasma
a collar

Lots to choose from .

-One of the characters can be a forum member (not strcitly a must).
-One character in the game needs to have some sort of quirk/craziness/funny talk/physical or mental disorder/past trauma/mystery/whatever.

That's all, hope that's free enough, no restrictions on color depth and resolution.

The theme is going to be Christmas but this time it will be with famous characters.

An example: Bernard, Hoagie and Laverne get's invated to Dr. Fred's house for a Christmas party but someone have stolen the presents and it's up to Bernard and pals to find the presents and find the guilty one.

The rules:

1: There must be a Christmas story which is based on existing characters from movies, cartoons or games (not real persons if they don't feature in those things mentioned like). Adventure games characters from Lucas Arts and Sierra games are okay.

2: The main-character must have a santa hat on his head. It's up to you if you want the other characters to have a santa hats but you don't have to if you want.

3: There must be at least five playable rooms and at least one must include snow (a snow-veiw out of a window is okay but paintings don't count). The snow-plug in is welcome but it's not "stricktly".

The rest is up to the contestants...

If you got any games that you want to use the characters from you can either start from scratch or go to http://www.juncmodule.com/juncSource.html to rip off characters, backgrounds, objects etc...

I'm getting myself a Gamecube on Wednesday :D

Can anyone reccomend any good games? I'm already getting Zelda, Mario Kart DD and 007 Nightfire.

Ever wanted to make yourself a classic Sierra text-based adventure? Well now you can with the new Text Parser Template.
Just put the agt file in the AGS program directory and start a new game to select it.

Version 2.0
This is a completly new reworking hence the jump straight to v2.0. I started fresh from a blank AGS document. This is fully annotated, more concise and easier to learn to use. It also uses the new AGS 2.7 scripting style. This is the earliest version and I still have to re-work some of the more complex stuff like inventory system etc... but it is more than enough to get you going. This is now broken down into 1 room.

Version 1.1
  - Added two rooms with interactions AND annotations
  - Fixed "Get Closer" command when you take key
  - Fixed minor spelling errors
  - Removed the readme as no-one really use's it (annotations were easier)

Have fun

Download here (Thanks Rui)

Just to let everyone know this is old and outdated, you're welcome to use it but I suggest it as just example code to reference and perhaps learn how to do it yourself, either that or check out the enhanced version from Laukku

Due to popular demand on IRC i'm releasing the competition a day early so you can think a bit more about it, and I expect to see games from Vel and  Alkaline, and if I don't "may CJ have mercy on your souls"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theme: Magic & other Paranormal Activities.

That’s right. The new theme for the Mags competition is magic. You have to design a game that includes at least an element of magic, witchcraft, occult or paranormal activity. The character can be anything or anyone you wish, as long as it fits the story.

- The main character can be either good or evil but no matter which, should have a strong personality and motive for his/her actions.
- The setting can be anything. (medieval, modern, fantasy,sci-fi or anything else you want).
- There must be a Day/Night change, at least once, somewhere in the game. (cutscenes included)
- There must be a well-thought ending, or conclusion.
- Although not “strictly” obligatory, a severed body part is more than welcome.
- It would be a good idea for the main character to possess some sort of special power or discover having it during the game.

I believe that the rules are open enough to allow flexibility in your ideas. I will agree with the forum members that main idea is to have fun .
I hope that the subject is juicy enough and can be interpreted in so many ways that it will be a challenge for everybody.
Remember, even if magic isn’t your thing, you could still make a game about the character not liking it, or facing an inner conflict.

Have fun creating.

Plot examples (cliché):

- Light: A magic book that carries children to a fantasy land to defeat an evil witch.
- Medium: A young cop who has the ability to read peoples minds.. and fights an ancient evil.
- Dark: A deamon seeking a “host” in order to carry through his mission on earth.

OCTOBER RULES
The game must contain at least 3 different inventory items that have never been used before in any adventure game*, and the inventory items must have something to do with a puzzle to complete the game.

the plot must contain one or more elements of the following:
-post apocalyptic world
-time travel
-divine intervention
-horror
-the meaning of life

Must contain one (or more) forum member(s) (or) their descendant

*Saying any adventure game is a bit too restrictive and confusing as most people havn't played ALL the adventure games EVER made, so we will restrict this to commercial Sierra/Lucas Arts games - SO NO RUBBER CHICKENS AND GUNS! we're looking for original.

As usual ALL games must be in by 25th October - Have Fun :D
