General Discussion / Re: My GCSE results.
Thu 25/08/2005 22:01:55
Well congrats to all, I got my results for my first year at uni a few weeks ago, I passed it all which is good.

As for my GCSE results I remember a lot of b's. I alos remember a D in art, hence my minimal artistic abilities.

A level's where A,B,D

Farl - How it works out for us Brit's:

GCSE - A*-A-B-C (pass) D-E-F (fail) A = highest and F lowest, with U being ungraded (either no show on exam or less than like 20%) A* being an awarded merit in the subject (higher than 90% or so I think).

A-Levels - A-B-C-D (pass) E-F (fail) U as ungraded again.

Imagine an A as 6/6 and an F as 1/6 and a U as 0/6

I'm in, even if I have to spend my student loan. I think September would be good, but I think quite a lot of people have University. Me personally won't start till October, although as I'm in a sanwhich degree I'll have a years work placement.

I think late August sounds good, but don't particularly mind.

As for Easter, I think that sounds even better. Everyone is off for easter hopefully, flights are cheaper, weather is cooler but not cold, and money should still be abundant for me, but what about booking, will this leave enough time.

I vote easter over summer.

General Discussion / What's on your desktop?
Tue 23/08/2005 14:33:51
Just something interesting I thought of. Anyone who feels like it, take a screenshot of your desktop (try to shrink the size down a tad to fit on the page).

I'm just curious as to what desktop icons everyone has, what backround and what OS.

I'll start with mine.

(p.s anything personal can be blurred etc...)

My favorite adventure game puzzle was in Quest for Glory 1, when you had to knock over the candelabra, swing on the chandelier and slam the door shut when the bandits brigands came.  It required percise timing, nimble fingers, and it was one of the few things the hero did without looking like a moron or falling on his head. ::)

I've never been a fan of adventure games requiring timing, or nimble fingers. Mainly for the fact, I like my adventure games to be very laid back and play through at my own pace working thing's out as I go along. I do admit I do like the occasional action scene, and I do like them even more when it is puzzle oriented, but I can't say that I'd make any of them my favourites, perhaps my least favourite maybe.

Things like the new Yahtzee game where you have to be real quick on the dance machine to progress, I hated. I managed to do Easy and Medium, but Hard mode was just a joke. This would not allow me to progress without having a fast enough reaction time (although this was only a side-quest). I can't think of any puzzle in particular that I did not find satisfying in some way, but I always found some of the ones in Kings Quest to be very nice, such as using the red cloth with the Minatour to destroy the wall etc...

Any puzzle that has walking deads I HATE!!!!! More than anything and it is because of this I strayed away from playing any other Kings Quest (I've only played 1 and 5). Not only that is excessive death scene's like in Leisure Suit Larry really put me off, where even the slightest mistake would kill you, rather than a more logical conclusion.

I've rambled on about puzzle's and puzzle types I dislike, but haven't really mentioned ones I do like. I've always been a fan of the Monkey Island spit contest (don't consider me a hypocrit because I said I don't like precise timing and nimble fingers), but all you had to do was to spit at the right time, and if you failed... no death, no imprisonment and best of all you could re-try. Also I very much liked how the end puzzle worked out in Monkey Island 2 (making the voodoo doll). This was nicely done and took you back to the first real puzzle and had to remember how to make a voodoo doll, and gather items close enough to make the mix work.

I'll leave you all now as I'm rushing out the door.

MSPAINT!!!11112

Damn, you got skillz

I agree that this will be tough to choose.

I think that whole friggin game is worthy of this quote page, almost every line made me laugh.

I still think it's very hard to choose just ONE game, when all genre's are different. I like some games eqully, some more than others, but I doubt I could choose just one game to be my favourite, as depending on my mood I may choose something like Grand Theft Auto over Monkey Island.

At the moment my favourite game would be World of Warcraft, but then again it is about the only game I'm playing apart from the first Need for Speed Underground, which in itself is reasonably fun and I can just load up and play instantly.

FoY
Pleurghburg: The Asylum
Ben Jordan (5 is it?)
Apprentice 3

As everyone else has said, I'm sure there is more.

At the moment my internet is working fine, but it keeps going down. Should it go down I will enter. I do like the rules and believe it will bring out a lot of creativity in the stories. I won;t read any entries until I write mine, but I do have an idea brewing that needs a little more thought before starting.
#530
Would it be ok if I animate mine >:D or photoshop like 20 or 3 frames for an animation / comic style entry?

I agree with the fact that standards of games have shot up, but company's such as EA have total disregard for actual game-play and are more interested in the money. Obviously a graphically better game will sell better as most customers flip over the case, check out the screenies and read what you can do on it. e.g 1 billion rooms, 20,000 characters, 3d graphocs etc...

If you think about point-and-click adventures, yes they seem to me to be better than most games that are out nowadays, but that's merely my preferance in genre, and they rarely release point and clicks anymore.

General Discussion / Re: Zooty down under

WOW, you know someone from Round the Twist. I remember that show, but can't say I've seen it in a while.

Punch, yes we do get it over here in Great Britain as m0ds suggested.

Zooty, sounds like you're having a great tiem, I wish I could go. Perhaps in a few years when I finish Uni I'll blow any student loans I have on a holiday.

I've often thought of dishing out some dosh when it comes to the graphical side of things, but then realise that I don;t have the resources to pay anyone what I belive would be a deserving price, or even any price. Graphically I can just about swindle a background, but when it comes to characters and animations I am lost, more lost than a polar bear in the jungle.

Payment is a nice option for some of those out there, but I think the ebst thing to do when making games is to trade. E.g, I don't have much talent in any specific area, but I personally believe I have competent web-design skills. So I may trade a character or a piece of music for a website. Or even just generally helping someone out by beta testing, critiquing or even offering my ideas when someone is thinking of puzzles etc...

As far as money goes I think it's only a wise option if the person is planning on making it commercial and being able to make the money back.

I can think of three money making games at the moment using AGS - Fatman, 5 Days a Stranger and a fairly recent one featuring the wonderful default AGS gui's, which turned me off instantly.

Hmm, probably best if I list mine per genre. I'll try to think and keep only 1 per category.

RPG - Chrono Trigger
Great game made for the SNES with a followup sequal called Chrono Cross, which I could never find to buy as it was only a US/Japanese release. Chrono Trigger basicaaly is a game about time travel and is a turn-based RPG. The story itself is amazing and will keep you gripped, and the characters have their own individual personalities as well which is good.

Other games worth a mention in this category: Star Wars - Knights of the Old Repulic, Baldur's Gate, Silver and Golden Sun.

FPS - Call of Duty
I know a lot of people will say "CoD, Really?, why not Half Life 2?" Well to be honest although Half-Life 2 and Counterstrike are good games, I just loved Call of Duty, both the single player and even more so the multiplayer. There were close seconds such as Unreal Tournament, but Call of Duty was about the first FPS I really got addicted to, I think I played it almost constantly one summer.

Other games worth a mention in this category: Counterstrike, Half Life 2, Unreal Tournament, Doom.

Sport - Virtua Tennis
Highly addictive game on the Dreamcast (I think it was also on PS2), I could sit and play for ages because it was so easy to play, yet challenging to beat opponents as you progresssed.

Other games worth a mention in this category: Need for Speed Underground

Fighting - Dragonball Z Budokai
I've played many game sin this genre including Street Fighter, Capcom Vs SNK and Soul Calibur, but I haven't really enjoyed any of them. Budokai was a mixture of nicely combined special moves, with cartoon graphics. Very fun and about the only game in this genre I like.

Other games worth a mention in this category: None

Adventure - Monkey Island 2
I could talk for hours about how this game got everything spot on, and why it is better than all the other Monkey Islands, and all the other adventure games. What I really liked about this was that it kept everything witty, had a unique story-line and was piratey. There was also the free roaming aspect of travelling to any of the three islands at will, kinda of like a early version of GTA gone Caribbean.

Other games worth a mention in this category: Beneath a Steel Sky, Sam and Max, Broken Sword and Grim Fandango.

Simulation - Rollercoaster Tycoon
This game was great, I've played things like RCT 2 and 3, but 1 was the best and most addictive for me. There were similar things such as Theme Park, but had very limited ride construction tools. I've also played many god sims such as Black and White and Settlers, but I enjoy building rollercoasters and RCT is the most fun I've had from any simulation game.

Other games worth a mention in this category: Settlers 3, Black and White, Theme Hospital and Sim City 4.

Can someone (preferably timosity or a moderator) go through the links on the first page and update them all adding in the new ones, deleting the old, editing the change of addresses etc.

BTW haddas - that avatar costs you £10 a day in royalties to me.... and £5 to m0ds ¬_¬

The Rumpus Room / Re: Sam and Max 2 Cancelled!
Mon 08/08/2005 18:06:37
From the unofficial sam and max website I just read this relating to an article with steve purcell.

Finally, Steve concludes his comments with equivocation about whether his involvement in the game industry is completely behind him:"Would I get back into games? Sure. The [Sam & Max] license is back in in my hands now so we'll see what happens in the near future."

hmm.... :D

I once found a penny, but the damned tramp got to it first.... darn my luck.

Quite a nice little story and an amazing find for the price ;)

Honestly though the best thing I've come accross is are two free laptops. One was free because it is like a Pentium 1, 60mhz with like 2 mb ram, and the battery slides out while in use.

The other one is about a 600mhz Sony Vaio running Windows 98. It's good enough plus it has a DVD player, so again I'm not going to complain about the price :D
