How this could work is that every member is given five 'spending points' that they can use to give to another member. Once they have used up the five points the only way they can get more is by reviewing things, writing critiques etc...

A good way to have this would be to begin with a trial system maybe, where we have a forum post in the General Forum. About three or four people could keep track of it, every time someone posts something useful one of the 'moderators' would begin by adding that person a point. Should other forum members wish to give points they can merely reply in a follow-up post.

I think this would be a great way to test whether a system like this would work, and if so we can then put it to CJ to implement.

Advanced Technical Forum / Object Specific GUI
Fri 10/06/2005 16:45:30
I'm thinking about creating a GUI that would be similar to a VerbCoin, but rather than being restricted to just pictures of a mouth for talking, a hand for interacting and an eye for looking, I wish to add things like push, pull, open, close and some more specific ones related to puzzles or something... e.g destroy, jump, eat, punch, climb etc...

Each of these actions would be related directly to the object, hotspot or character. Should it be a character the options for talking and looking at would be available, and in the occasion fight.

With other things like a hotspot of a wall, the options look may be the only ones available, then you may go off speak to a character and he tells you theres a pot of gold at the top if you climb up, you go back and the new option of "climb" appears.

it's kind of a graphical text parser if you understand, where there are no limits to the actions that can be performed within the game only limited to the object itself.

has anyone got any help planning this out, coding it, theory and practicality issues?

I want to do this but I need your help please.

I think what would be good s if someone where to devise a system, maybe incorporated into the forums that would contain some sort of "Forum Karma" levels. By posting reviews, critisism other members can give these helpful people karma points, the higher the number of points you have the better karma rating. Like in the old ezboard days with the posting levels, once you reached 100 posts or something it would be something like posts too much or break out the bubbly.

I think having this would encourage people to write reviews and help with critisism and also for people who respond with "this is the biggest poiece of crap that I have ever seen, you suck" could be given negative karma.

I'm not sure if someone could implement this. I think that the point system should be governed by moderators who would read through posts in technical forums, critics lounge and completed games page, when something useful or helpful has been posted they would award these points, or we could have where any user can give karma points, but restrict it to 1 point per post so that people don;t start spamming.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Office Background
Thu 09/06/2005 23:34:41
Looks good, but what kinda of office only has a few pieces of paper on the desk. Imagine a standard office, research it, you might fins a filing cabinet, telephone, computer, waste paper basket, paper shredder, water cooler, coat stand.

Another thing, the pens look too neat on the desk. It's 11.30 now but I'll try to do an edit on the image tommorow.

Meh, I thought I'd do it before I forgot:

A bit rushed, but you get the idea. Looks more like an office I think and less empty.

I keep a notebook by my computer, whenever I have any idea I jot it down, and elaborate with story boards, pictures etc...

My story board (due to artisitc talent is just a bunch of boxes with arrows filled with the following info:

Room Name
Description
Characters Within Room
Puzzles (referenced 1,2,3 etc...)
I then plan out the puzzles by writing what it is they must achieve at the end of the whole level (which could be more than 1 room)
Then divide the final goal into as many sub quests as possible, link them together then work out the technicalitys.

For my current game I had to work out the following.

Underwater in a sinking ship, have to escape before you drown. Divided this into
1) Find suitable way out
2) Gather Objects
3) combine and use to escape

This is a general pattern helpful for writing puzzles

Next you take the room and think what might there be.

1) Escape through a crack in the hull
2) Die

Choose which one you want:

A crack is small, so it needs to be made bigger, using poles, levers, force etc... Then work out the rest from there.

As for dialog, thats the hardest stuff to jot down, but it's always best to start with a large page, write at the the bottom goobye, and at the top hello.

Design it like a flow chart.

Hello
|
Option 1     Option 2 - Option 3
|
Option 4

Etc...

Usually start from the last thing said and work your way back so you don;t miss anything.

Take Sam and Max for instance. Something tells me there isn't a real crime-fighting saddistic rabbit and dog going around trying to solve the mystery of Bigfoot...

See my point?

I know that that game is more cartoony and unrealistic, but even in Zak Mcraken I doubt he can fit that many items in his jacket, even if it was a very fine leather jacket.

All I'm trying to say is that the majority of the world bases ideas of locations on Stereotypes, and Americans are worst known for this. Most would believe we British people sit around drinking tea and eating porridge while watching the afternoon cricket in a suit from our castle windows.

You're not meant to take offense by innacuracy's based on common views to make a setting, the whole world is based on stereotyping and common ideas to symbolise and relate to certain locations.

I do agree to the extent that when placing a game in a realistic location, it should be based on realistic locations.

Magintz's Tent of Fun Non-Homosexual Lovin'

*Me
*Haddas
*JetXL

3 Spaces Remaining

The tent is divided into 2 areas so if there are any females who need tent space don't feel off put at all, we males can have one room and the females can have the other area. If noone else signs up then we can have 2 in one area and 2 in the other :D making plenty of room for all!

EDIT - Ismael can't make it so we have an extra space
#631
OK About my tent, it's fairly big. It's got a sleeping area and a living area. The sleeping area sleeps 4 comfortable, and the living area could sleep another 4 if needed, or we can use it to shove stuff and socialise should weather be crap.

So if people need sleeping space just bring a sleeping bag and anything else you require such as pillows.

I'm assuming people will have bags which we will have to store in the living area, so please no more than 6 people tops including me in this tent.

Just took a browse and it looks like flights for August 19th from London will be in the region of £250 return with easyjet. Forgive me if anyone has found it cheaper, but with this, plus transport from athens and camping fee we're looking at maybe £300 just to be there. I know this is still resonably cheap it's about £150 outside my budget, so looks like I won;t be able to make it this year, again.

If we could postpone till september we could knock the price of tickets down to about £170.

EDIT - BA Heathrow to Athens £212 15th August - 22nd August

Checked out on www.opodo.co.uk

Still at these prices I can't afford to go on such short notice seeing as how I don't have a job.

I'll see everyone at Brittens though.

I went job hunting today. In total I've asked in 15 places and they've all said not hiring. I doubt I'll be able to go to Mittens if I can't get a job as I have no money. I may have to resort looking at McDo.... no wait *slaps self* what was I thinking. I may apply to sainsbury's or tesco or somewhere

Anyway where I can get money and leave when I need to :P
#637
I may be able to rustle up 2 extra chairs, and by the looks of things I might possibly be able to borrow my brothers tent which is like 4 people with a huge roof and like 2 rooms. It's reasonably big, but It's more tall than anythig else.

Will report back when my brother remains consciousness from getting drunk.

This reminds me of a game I once owned for my Amiga. Can't remember much as I only had the demo, but you had to somehow find a way out of a lift after waking up in there or something. Once you escaped it was the end of the demo and asked me to pay some ridiculous amount for the full game :P

PP - Yea I watched that episode the other day and just laughed, no matter how many times I see it, it's still so funny.
