Well, it looks like a week is too short. I'm all for 2 week submissions, but I don't think a month is too long either.

What is the Photoshop Phortnight?

See this link:
http://www.somethingawful.com/photoshop/

And for other examples, see here:
http://www.worth1000.com/

The two above websites should give a fair idea of what is involved. Also you can check out the earlier Photoshop Phridays in this forum.

Note: Photoshopping isn't drawing a completely new image -- It's editing images to create a new image, such as editing one image or combining several images.

Also, you don't have to specifically use Photoshop -- Paint Shop Pro, Gimp or any other ~equally good programs can be used.

Art Butchering

At Worth1k sometimes referred as "Modern Renaissance", your mission is to alter artwork (such as Mona Lisa or David) to include modern elements (such as politicans, celebrities, pop culture references, adventure game references etc.) as in my themepost "Pope Sulley", after Raphaels "Portrait of Pope Julius II".

You can include a small original (or a link to it) if it's not well known (should not be needed for Mona Lisa or Birth of Venus, for example).

It's been my apreciation or Makri has been out of the forum for ages? Glad to see you're back.  :)

Oh I check in here every now and then. Between raising kids (and making more) and hanging around at beforementioned Worth1000, I don't have much time for other important things, such as finishing any of the 10+ adventure games I've started to make over the years ;)

Well, here's my quick attempt.

I didn't exactly follow tocath's (great) tutorial but I have read it in the past. I've also never entered any of the modern ruins contests at Worth. I do think, however, that they are one of the hardest contests over there, so I think describing this as "fairly easy" isn't really accurate.

But what can you gain if you believe in nothing? That's my whole point.

Personally, not having to build my world on absolute truths of religion or science gives me a peace of mind :). As for afterlife gambling, you probably don't lose anything by taking your chances with one specific religion. Then again, maybe, say, Allah exists and lets in (the paradise) those who didn't deny him, muslims and agnostics.

In the end, we choose to believe whatever we need to believe in order to make sense of life, universe and everything. For some people it's some religion, for some it's science. And then there's some who don't have the need to believe either way.

As for the original topic, I think promoting fornication is always a great thing, whether it's in the bible or whereever.

What it boils down to for me, is this: if God doesn't exist, when I die, I lose nothing. But if I was an athiest, and if God does exist, then when I die I lose it all. What do you have to lose in Christianity?

There's thousands of other religions too. What if they're right? You'd be damned for not believing in their teachings (or, worshipping a false god). Even if one of all the religions would happen to be right, you have tiny little chance of choosing the correct one.

The world isn't filled with just christians and atheists.

Everyone has a God, by the way. Your God could be not believing in God -- atheism. That's your religion.

Not exactly. An agnostic doesn't have such "god" - not one of believing any more than of non-believing.

Terrorists, catholic, muslim or whatever, believe in their cause beyond the level we can comprehend. It has nothing to do with money, violence or thrill and everything to do with revenge, hatred and faith. They believe what they're doing is right and makes the world a better place. They believe they're fighting against the scum of the world and everything that is evil. They believe they're the good guys. They see themselves as freedom fighters, heroes and martyrs. They see their actions not only justified but as a greater form of goodness.

It's easy to underestimate them when we don't agree with their views, goals and means. We all can understand reasons why ETA hates the Spanish, IRA hates the Brits, Palestinians hate the Jewish and Al Qaeda hates the Americans. What we don't understand is their level of hatred and what they are willing to do because of it.

No navigation at all in any of my browsers. Lots of useless and harmful javascript and loads of errors in html.

The most important thing in making a site is that it at least works on every single browser ever made - it's not really all that difficult goal to achieve. JavaScript should never be used for anything important such as navigation (or other links), people turn it off for a reason. Looks should never be the starting point of page design, usability always comes first.

The trend in browser developement these days seem to be to support standards, so the smartest way to make pages would be to make them valid html. This ensures they work in future versions of browsers too.

I'd recommend to build a simple layout that works (and is valid html) without any formatting. Then add all formatting later with CSS.

My monitor should be quite well calibrated at the moment and I find that way too dark, full screen or not.

General Discussion / Re:What programs???
Thu 11/03/2004 06:10:21
The program you need depends on what kind of graphics you're creating.

For natural media type painting, Corel's Painter 8 is by far the best choise. For photo editing, PS/PSP/Gimp are quite equally good. They work for pixel art too, even if they're somewhat humongous overkill. PS advantages are more in printing capabilities so from game graphics point of view it has nothing that the other two don't. For vectors, go for Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Freehand. No matter what you use initially, the final pixel perfect editing for game purposes can be done in PS/PSP.

Now, Deluxe Paint is still a wonderful program and was used to create some true masterpieces, but it lacks layers so there are better options available these days. You don't have to have layers, but it sure makes things easier.

Yeah, it's exactly the same file, I'm just anal about the way I store my AGS games, so I renamed it :)

In some cases spaces in filenames can cause problems. It's a good practise to never use spaces/non-alphanumeric characters in filenames that are distributed via internet.

As a proud owner of 4 versions (5,6,7,8) of legal Paint Shop Pros, I'd recommend it. If you have taken Gimp to your heart, that's cool, but if you want more PS-ish program PSP is a good (and cheap) choise. Here PSP costs less than tenth of what PS does.
#35
Well, I'm pro Gimp whenever possible, it's a great program and everyone should give it a try. For the most parts, there's no reason why a skilled person couldn't do the same quality image editing with Gimp as they do with PS/PSP. That being said, personally I can't stand working with it and choose PSP.

But, since you posted this in Critics lounge and asked criticism... As an answer to your question, no I don't like the image. I don't really understand the point of it. There's a few filters thrown in and a bad paintover that looks just what it is - mouse drawn. It's not the worst 'photoshopping' I've ever seen technically, and maybe it's not the worst idea either. Then again, I've seen tens of thousands. It just needs more point, idea and a few hours of work. As of now, I'd give it 1 out of 10.

If you want to learn photoshoppery, Worth1000 is a good place to start. There's a few tutorials (for PS, but should work for Gimp too) and over 72,000 user submitted images to study.

Critics' Lounge / Re:Web shite design :-*
Wed 25/02/2004 13:59:25
The first index page is useless and listing system requirements is a very bad idea (just as "designing" a web page for certain resolution and browser). The most important thing in designing a good web page is that it works on any browser, any colour depth and any screen resolution. Flash (or any other non html method, such as javascript) should never be used as the only method of navigation. Also, as mentioned earlier, frames are rarely a good design option. The total size of over 200k is also way too much.

Drop the frames, flash and the doormat page and shrink the size to somewhere under 40k* and it's a good page. I like the BW look.

Also, when considering alternative way to make the navigation, I'd make it static as movement, was it flash or gif anims, distracts from reading the actual content. Most surfers hate anything that moves on a page.

* Usability studies state that users leave a page that doesn't load in 8 seconds and look for the info somewhere else. Fast modem connection loads 40k page in 8 seconds. Most internet users are still using a dialup connection.

I doubt something like that would cause much fuss over here in Finland. We're fairly used to see nakedness all over (TV and elsewhere) and not necessarily connect it to sexuality. My wife (Canadian) used to be surprised when basic TV channels showed things like completely naked women (and men) at times when children are watching (like, 6 PM - 9 PM).
