Well, what can I say? My protagonist likes to strut!

Anyway, we should talk about abstauber's walk-cycle. My point about the shading still stands I think...

I meant use the shading to really stronly show which parts of the body are moving away/towards the screen.

This is one of mine. (You have got the body twist down to a better art than me though, I must say!)

This reminds me of Beneath a Steel Sky. Things that reminds me of Beneath a Steel Sky makes me happy...

Really glad to hear it! :) BASS is one of my all time favourites and a massive inspiration for me!

He's much less squinty in the animation.  I like squinty.

It's just the way it's scaled. I had to animate this at about 90-95% character size because of where in the room it takes place. Also, because of a scripting quirk that meant I had to use an object, rather than directly animate the characters.

I really like them but maybe you could emphasise the movement of the upper half of the leg more. You could this by making the light (shading) changes more extreme. In fact, you could do this with the whole sprite.

Before, I thought the Hero was slapping the other guy with a stinky fish.

Haha!

It is clearer what is going on when in the context of the game, don't worry! ;)

The game's hero turns out to be quite a brutal man.

Or does he? - you've hit on something rather important there.

Hi everyone,

I'm afraid this is going to take longer than I first thought. Some bits and pieces came up when it was tested - basically:

A lot of dialogue needs re-writing. Some locations need polishing and fleshing out and I've thought of a couple of extra puzzles. There is also a lot of animation to do, which I had pretty much exclusively left for the time being.

The testing was definitely worthwhile though providing some really useful observations and the game will be ten times better because of it.

As way of an apology, here is a brand new animation:

Ah, I was trying to use InventoryItemCount.

Thanks!

How do I find out how many items the player currently has in their inventory?

I found out how to get the total number in the game but that's all.

I'm sure this must be somewhere in the help/manual. I just can't find it for the life of me.

Cheers,
Mark

Glad to hear you finished this! :) I'm playing through slowly at the moment - loving the new title sequence and the whole 'Acts' thing you've got going on.

P.S. I will be interacting with EVERYTHING.

I really like the design and I agree with loominous on the lighting...

@loominous: Is that scene in Batman not lit like that deliberately?
Spoiler
To make Batman's costume look silly and thus the costumes of the 'copycats' look equally silly...

Either way, your point was made rather well! :)

Love the second image!

Critics' Lounge / Re: On Drawing Backgrounds

I just get the feeling we should all take a step back and grasp some perspective. Yes, rules are important but there needs to be room to apply some common sense, too. At the end of the day, it's just a forum. A forum full of friendly enthusiasts. I think any action that threatens that atmosphere is more grave than a little rule breaking...

Anyway, I'm going to draw a big line now so people can continue the thread on-topic (i.e. about Ben's art)...

If you can get away with it I'd take the writing and the arrow off the garage door... It distracts from the scene... Takes the eye's focus away from the guy in the chair.

The rest of it is fantastic though, very atmospheric! :)

P.S. You need to get your light source back in there somehow, too!

I don't normally speak out on such issues but let's not put the poor guy off...

If this was a usual critics lounge post I would understand the point of bringing up the thread rules - the author will have finished or abandoned the piece they were working on by this later time.

It is a tutorial post, though. Surely it is not beyond reason for people to post comments of thanks or curiosity at any time regardless of how old it is?

I don't want to cause any trouble or single anyone out on purpose, but the attitude with which forum rules are upheld here has caused contention in the past and it can't be healthy for the community. Surely the general atmosphere and welcome we give as a forum is more important than the unforgiving protection of rules?

Oh ProgZ, that's amazing! :D

Anyone who has released an AGS game commercially in the past, or is hoping to in the future, should be seeing $$$ right now! ;)
#118
Wow, this is great news!

By animated backdrops, do you mean you plan to have say, 5 backgrounds for a room and cycle them? I'm not sure if I'm right but to solve the performance thing, just turn the animated parts of the backgrounds into animating objects...

Anyway, really looking forward to the next part!

I have the option set to true. There must be something funky about how AGS works, which means you can't do the whole visible thing with dialog option guis...
