I'm sure someone's said this already but Twitter is for networking online. Simple as that.

That animation has so many frames that my eye is tricking me into seeing the background colour by his feet slide along towards me. As if he were on a treadmill ;D

Good luck with this!

Babar: One thing I find useful in this sort of situation is to take the colour you are painting with at the opacity you want it, paint a blob on a layer and use the colour picker to pick the colour of that blob as your new painting colour. Then undo, change brush opacity back to 100% and paint the image without having to worry about translucency later on. This works really great, but can look a bit strange if you have a very strong sky gradient.

That's what I do for shading. Do it using transparency, then either take a screen-shot and paste over the original image on 100% or just select the new colour it produces and add that to a 100% layer.

Great tutorial, Ben. When I get a tablet I'll also be having a go at some 'painted' backgrounds. My style at the moment is more line tool based.

The issue of which looks better is a matter of opinion and opinion only.

The issue of which is easier to do to a high standard is not. Low res is easier, because you have to invest less time in details, etc.

I think what a few people here are trying to say, in a roundabout way, is that it may be easier to start at a low res.

I love how the story seems to be a mix between The Matrix, Nineteen Eighty-Four and Beneath a Steel Sky - perfect! :)

Full opinion soon...

EDIT: Lovely little game, Ben's art is getting better and better! The music was fab and the darker story was interesting.

The end dialogue sequence did seem a little un-interactive, though. That's my only crit'.

Very excited about this, now.

I think adventure gaming truely is on the way back!

edit: the number of people who nominated was 55, which left me quite disappointed.

I've voted and tweeted, it would be nice if there was a big turnout, you've done a great job so far...

Time Gentlemen, Please! has a lot of nominations, lets do the game and Zombie Cow justice this year! They should definitely win Best Dialogue and Best Puzzles... :)

Ben has quite a few nominations, too!

Great to know that there are so many of you low-res supporters out there!

You can add me to that list! This is looking better all the time, good luck with it! :)

I couldn't disagree more. It is never a good idea to make things difficult for people. It is just as likely that the site having all the flaws you suggest has filtered out some incredible talent.

Also, your view seems very elitist. Surely we want to encourage people who are struggling to come and get advice and improve?

It's a really nice start! It reminds me of a scene in Superman Returns. ;)

I like what you have done with the clouds but I think they could do with being less jagged-y. Obviously it is important they are unusually shaped but the extremity of this breaks the visual impression that they actually are clouds. Basically, a little confusing to the eye...

Good job, though. Lots of nice atmosphere!

P.S. I also agree on the road, make it less straight.

Trying to make my "own" John Sinclair-Walking sprites?
Well, Than would have to change really much animations because the Walking-sprites are the "basic-positions" of every move that John makes. And of course the ripping and changing was work too ;)

Making games is a lot of work! ;) I was just saying you looked more than capable of doing the sprites yourself.

Good luck with it all, anyway!

I was about to say the sprites look like Ben Jordan...

I don't speak German so I didn't really know what was going on but it looks promising... If the character sprites are the only things that are ripped you are clearly capable of drawing your own. So why not try it? ;)

I agree with LimpingFish. I don't like all the shadows and stuff on Ryan's edit...

Wow mods, you do love a good conspiracy, don't you? ;)

I see faces in rocks when I walk past them all the time. And in pieces of toast. The human brain has evolved to recognise features of the human face easily, and we get confused. Far better see a face or a body in the shadows and run, than see what is really there (just some texture or other) and it turn out to be an enemy tribe leader! (reference: read some Dawkins)

I have no doubt that micro-organisms have/do exist on Mars and that intelligent life is possible elsewhere. But intelligent life landing on Mars and carving a big rock that looks like a face from one of Le Woltaire's games - hardly likely! ;)

Why everytime I read this topic's title , I hear David Bowie?  ;)

See my last post! ;D

I agree, it would be a massive discovery. But it's one of those things that would be a massive discovery not for the technological possibilities, etc but just because of the concept. The concept of life elsewhere - wow. It would be a big thing for mankind because of our imagination, rather than anything else, which is great!

That last paragraph makes little sense on reflection...
