Hints & Tips / Re: Bob goes home

Hi I am the creator of Bob Goes Home. There is a walkthrough (written by sportyjay) right here.

If anyone has played this can they tell me if there is a bug in the game.Ã,  Everytime I click on doors I walk up the hall and go in the opposite direction of where I want to go?

I am terribly sorry about that, it is a bug in the game. I am currently working on Bob Goes Home Deluxe which has heaps better graphics (by Krysis) and hopefully no annoying glitches like this.

I'm pretty well stuck myself. I have

outside key, portrait, knife, scissors, and portrait key. However, the portrait key won't open anything. Cafeteria, janitor's closet, and second classroom just won't open.

If you don't want to look at the walkthrough, lakerz,

Just remember that there are a lot of keys to find and there may be some in the first part of the game that you haven't found.

Were you editing room objects or GUI objects at the time? There have been a couple of bug fixes in 2.71 in relation to crashes in the sprite editor; have you experienced this problem more than once?

I was changing some stuff about hotspot interactions and decided to change the image of one of my objects. I may have edited some of my GUIs but I'm not sure. Also, this is the second time. I will get the latest version of AGS Editor as soon as I get some time.

Advanced Technical Forum / AGS Error Message
Thu 24/11/2005 21:05:14
I was creating my game in AGS Editor and this message popped up. At that time I had been entering properties in the interaction thingy and I was about to change the image of an object. It opened up the sprite manager like normal but what wasn't normal was the error message that popped up. It said something like "You have deleted a sprite and sprite 53 can not be found." I clicked the ok button only to recieve the same message again. The thing was that I had not deleted any sprites, and nor was I using a sprite 53. Then a short time later (still in the sprite manager) this message popped up:

"We're sorry, the AGS editor has encountered a serious error and must shut down. You will have lost any changes made since you last saved your game.

(Exception 0x00000000 at EIP=0x00000000, AGSEDIT v2.70.601, SIP=26)

(...)"

Here is the full screenshot.
I would appriciate it very much if someone could help me.

Those codes are in an earlier version of AGS Editor, but I "converted" them into the version I have and after a bit of work it worked. I will post the code that I used soon, because I have some problems. When the player opens the inventory it says "Interact with" and whatever is in the inventory. Also when the "wait" or "pointer" cursor is being used it still says something of the kind I stated before.

I once had and experience of which I don't know if it is real or just my imagination.
I was about 10 years old when I was woken up by a loud sharp noise. I realised it to be my dog, who has barking madly. I went outside to calm her down and I found her standing, half stiffened, barking at a semi-transparent figure. I saw it for a brief moment before it turned (?) and started floating (?) through the fence. I saw that my dog was fine now, and so I returned to my bed and went into a deep slumber.
A teacher when I was back in primary school once told me of a ghost he had apparently encountered.
He used to live in England, and one night when he was riding home on his motorcycle he saw a pale girl on the side of the rode waving at him. It was raining and no-one else was around so he went over to see what she wanted. She wanted to get a lift home, and seeing as her house was on the way home, he let her onto the back of his motorbike and set off on his journey. He arrived at her house and stopped. He then realised that she wasen't on his bike anymore, so he went back to try and find her. He failed to find her and so he went to the address told to him by the girl. He knocked on the door and an old lady opened it. He told her of the unfortunate accident and her face grew paler and paler each word. She then told him how her daughter had died in a by falling off the back of her boyfriend's motorbike two (2) years ago.

Even though there is not any evidence that these actually happened, for some reason they seem to be etched into my skull as if they were taught to me by an old wise mentor.

Can someone please help me with some coding for a GUI where it shows "Walk to" if the cursor is walk, and "Look at" if the cursor is look?
I currently have @OVERHOTSPOT@ in the GUI but want the extra part at the front.

I'm sorry that I couldn't enter this comp but my PC was having some problems. (I tried beating it with a stick but it didn't fix it!) I've fixed my computer now so I'll try to get into the next comp if I can.
Also, nice animations by both entries, but I just think buloght has a smoother run.

Probably because this forum is one of the few out there that dosen't have gigantice sigs that are bigger that most of the posts, cluttering things up and slowing down folks on dial up.

I purposely optimised the gif so that it was dial up friendly. In fact I know what it is like to see sigs that are twice the size of posts on 56kbps because I use a 56k modem. Also I fail to see how my sig clutters things up.

Besides, I'm not sure how to interpret that animated gif. Are you saying our perception of reality is corrupt and we should therefore disregard it, thus erasing us out of our own existence? Cause that doesn't make any sense!

It is a joke implying that most of the world are so caught up with themselves that they forget everything happening around them. So, in a way I am saying that some people's perception of reality is corrupt, but not necessarily yours. I have it here because I believed (and still do believe) that everyone on this forum could appreciate a slightly intelligent joke.

Thanks, Mozza, with your attitude you showed us that the adoption idea wouldn't work.

I am sorry that your mind has been made up about a simple thing that could have been prevented if, in fact we had an Adoption Agency. If someone had have adopted me this conversation would never happened.

With that I am not trying to be disobidient of any rules on this forum or am I trying to annoy or be obnoxious towards any member of this forum. I must also say that I do indeed have respect for everyone and do not believe myself to be superior to any of you. I am not elitist.

Thank you to anyone who has actually read the whole way through this.

You can remove it in 3 seconds until you have the time to fix it.

Anyway what is the reason for that rule?

Having a mentor kinda means that you're willing to learn, but if you can't even look for the answer in the first place...

The "mentor" could be there just to help with any questions at all. They might not even have anything to do with AGS Programming. But even so, if a "mentor" is asked a question that could be answered by reading the manual they could direct the "n00b" to the place where it is in the manual. It would be the "mentor"'s decision if they answer it straight up or whatever.

Also, your sig image is still too big Mozza!

How about you try and fix it in the 5 hours I have had on and off the computer since this thread was started.Ã,  :(

As far as I see, tutoring already works - you post something in the critic's lounge, you get advice. You post something in the tech forum, you get programming advice. You post something in general discussions, you can discuss ideas, etc. Having a private tutor system would hide all this information from others who might also need it but don't ask, for whatever reason. There may be a lot of people, who don't post but still lurk around the forums.
There is no problem with the Critics Lounge as it is, but some people will get annoyed if you post in the Beginners Tech with something that could be fixed by reading the manual. Even so, it will reduce the number of these posts if a "tutor" coiuld help the "n00b". If there are others who "don't post but still lurk around the forums" and want help on something, it is their own responsibility to actually post and do something about it.

I think the main problem with that was that people needing a mentor weren't sure if the people mentoring were serious. I wasn't sure. And I was afraid to go to them, because I was afraid I'd annoy them.
If someone offers to adopt you they are taking on the responsibility to answer your questions and such. If they are being rude or not taking it seriously you could report them to a mod or admin.

How do you define who is worthy of being a mentor? Or who is a newb? Sounds elitist to me....
A n00b could simply be someone who feels they do not know as much as they should before doing something, so they could ask their parent figure about it before doing it. It would definitely reduce the number of questions in the Beginner's Tech that could simply be solved by reading the manual.

General Discussion / n00b adoption idea
Sun 13/11/2005 22:25:38
I have been on a forum where there is a "nAA - n00b Adoption Agency". A "n00b" posts in the thread and states their Likes, Dislikes, Favourite Gaming Platform, and Other Useless Info. The user who wants to be the parent figure then PMs the n00b asking if they want to be adopted by them and such. I think it is a good idea and it would help n00bs get to know their way around the forum because they could trust the person who has adopted them to reply to any questions.
Just an idea.

Isn't this that game stereotypically played by corporate managers, doctors, lawyers, etc?

Yeah, maybe if they are prepared to get all hot and sweaty. :=
And no, eating squash isn't quite what I meant.  ;)
Also I remember <reminisce> when I used to play with an old wooden racquet. Those were the days! :D I now use a real graphite composite racquet so I must be super hardcore!!!!11!!
