Welcome again to this fortnight's tune contest. This time we deal with outer space. You may choose any style, length and instrumentation you like.

Your song somehow has to be depict something located in outer space. Examples:
- A tune that would fit to a scene taking place in an abandoned space station
- A song for Monolith Burger's tv ad
- ... a deserted desert planet
- ... a dessert planet
- ... an epic space battle
- ... and so on

You earn extra points if you manage to convey the feeling without the standard space synthies. Are you creative enough to get your setting nailed even with a balalaika or a recorder? :D

If you want, you can elaborate on the setting you choose, write a short story, show a picture. With certain pictures in mind, your tune might have a greater impact on the listeners.

The contest ends March 24th. Then the winner will be decided.

Have fun! :)

cheers

Looks great so far. Really immersive.

Okay, here's my entry:

Lucida

I think I had Porcupine Tree in mind (especially Arriving Somewhere But Not Here), so I thought I'd have a go at using highly deformed instruments, changing the instrumentation altogether and importing some samples. I failed.

Okay, due to lack of time, this one's rather messy. Nah, just kidding, I just fuck up the rhythm every time :D

It's a tragic romance comes to an unhappy end kind of thing:

Years ago a friend of mine's cat wandered off.  THREE MONTHS passed and they had moved on convinced AJ (the cat) had died and/or wasn't coming back.  They came home from school one day and AJ was chillin' on the front porch.  Came right in the house like nothing had happened and never wandered off like that again.

Yeah, like ten years ago, my family's cat disappeared from one day to the other. 10 months later he suddenly appeared on the balcony as if nothing had happened.

I hope you cat is alright and that he comes back.

I have to say I like it. The only thing bothering me is the grass (it's the Photoshop brush, I guess). It looks like it floats above the ground instead of growing out of it.

finding people to do 30 lines for free is easy enough. Finding people to do 300 lines for free is more difficult. 300 lines take a lot of effort.

Depends, I guess. Aren't there some online communities out there with people who'd love to do some voice acting for free AND have a reasonable equipment to record it? I know that radio dramas aren't as popular in other countries as they are here in Germany. Here, finding some quite decent voice actors would be the least of my problems when making a non-commercial game. I guess there are some of these in England, too. Depending on how professional you want the actors to be, that would be one option.

I agree with Darth that making a commercial game would be more of an effort. At least I wouldn't like to do it. People have much higher expectations of a commercial game, which I honestly couldn't meet.

I think you nailed the bright and sterile tone Technocrat wanted to have. It captures the mood just right. But I'm not too happy with the room's "offset". I just can't concentrate on one part of the image, because my eyes are drawn to the empy black spaces in the corners.

There's a German movie called "Der Schatz der weißen Falken" (The Treasure Of The White Falcons). It's quite similar to Stand By Me or The Goonies, but I don't know if there's an English version of it.

There's no female actor on your list, but I'd definitely try Now And Then.

So far it works really fine. I'm not using it too often, though, but when I do, it works.

Happy new year!

While cross eye 3D can be pretty effective (see here for example), I think this first room you show is quite shallow on the 3D part. Maybe photos (like in the example) would be a better choice.

Nice idea, although I have to say, I wouldn't play a game cross-eyed for more than 5 minutes. And I guess every time the background changed, you'd have to cross eye your eyes again.

I, too, found it to be pretty atmospheric. The backlit scenery is an interesting choice, and the animation on the clouds was superb. I thought it was a good idea to combine sounds with certain actions.

I'd certainly play a next chapter :D

I have it here and can confirm:
In the German version (at least in the Collector's Edition) you can switch between German and English talkie/subtitles.

I watchd John Carpenter's Halloween. Still a classic.

I'm on a TFT, and the new ones, although better in technical categories, seem to be way too dark to me.

@Darth: That's it! Strangely, I don't remember M.A.S.K. at all. But that's it. Thanks :D

General Discussion / Remembering a certain toy
Tue 03/08/2010 21:15:34
Hey,

in the last days, I remembered an old toy I once had, but I can't for heavens sake remember what it was called or which company built it. I live in Germany, but perhaps it was known in other countries as well.

It was a model of a gas station and a volcano (or a mountain) beside it. There was a road, too, I guess. The idea was that you could transform the gas station and the volcano into some kind of military base. The gas pumps would turn into turrets, and the top of the volcano would transform into some dome with machine guns all around. There were several small cars you could buy, but I don't remember them well. I don't think it was part of Micro Machines or Matchbox franchise, but I could be wrong here. Any idea what I'm talking about? Any pictures? I just can't find out what it was.

Do you still have any children's toys? Do you find yourself playing with your kid's LEGO fortress? Disuss :D

So please, Nintendo... STOP MAKING POKÉMON before you KILL THE FRANCHISE!

As far as I can see it, they killed it many years ago.
