My impression - correct me if I am wrong - is that case 2 had much better graphics than game 1, so Grundislav went back and gave case 1 a more polished look to fit in better with the rest of the series. So in that sense, every case from 2 onwards is already de luxe :)

Put it this way... a game is like an interactive film.

Suppose you buy a DVD. The film is really exciting - it's ten minutes from the end, the heroine has been tied to a railway line by the dastardly mustachioed villain, a train is speeding towards her and the hero is desperately trying to untie her. The tension is mounting - will he free her in time? Suddenly, he says, "Damn," he says, "I should have picked up a penknife at some point during the last 20 scenes! Oh well, sorry, my dear!" and jumps away just as the train hurtles over the heroine. The end.

Now, wouldn't you just want to march straight back to the shop and demand your money back? There's nothing to stop a film-maker from writing a plot like that, but he sure ain't gonna win any Oscars for it.

OK, the plot of a film is fixed and you have no control over it, but you see my point. It's up to you, but dead ends where the player has no idea what they did wrong or what they should have done to avoid them are generally seen as a big no-no these days.

I love the style of this game right down to the text everything has a unique feel about it.
I always love hand drawn sprites too, they remind me of Ben Jordan.

Thank you, it's nice to hear that. Wow, a comparison to Ben Jordan... I don't know if I can live up to that!

The game is coming along slowly. Half of the music has now been done and nearly two-thirds of the backgrounds. There is still loads of scripting to do (even though I say 91% is done, each 1% involves a lot of work...) but it's all coming together.

UPDATE: The backgrounds and music are coming along very well, but I am still looking for someone to do the character art if anyone is interested.

OneDollar's is actually better. A lot better.

~Trent

Yes it is, except for the spelling mistake - it ought to be "forty two" (no "u", and it's hyphenated if you want to be really pedantic: "forty-two").

Sorry, OneDollar, I wouldn't normally pick up on this, but correct spelling is vital in games with text input.

Happy birthdays to both Paolo and monkey_05_06!

Ah, thank you Ben, I knew you wouldn't forget! And thank you and happy birthday to monkey_05_06 - do we share a birthday then (4 April)?

Now some idiot will go and post some game they made in 5 minutes just to claim this 1000th Game -title to themselves.

Yes, I was afraid of making that happen... OK, no one else read this thread until we have two more games in the database, please.
#247
I've just taken a look at the complete list of games, and I see there are 998 in the database! So before long we will have 1000 games! I wonder what game number 1000 will be?

well i'm sick of this, i want to move on to other stuff, so i'm gonna leave it at this(moved a few pixels around since the last time though, but nothing too noticeable)

OK, if you are happy with this then that's great. To me, although the brow and the mouth work well, the eyes still don't look angry. People tend to either narrow their eyes or open them wide when they are angry, and his eyes are just normal. Just my thoughts.

As it seems, I think I should post something here too.

Well people, I'll let you all in a little secret Paul is keeping from you all. TCAN will have theese features also:

98057 different rooms, all hand-drawn
[etc]

You'd better a get a move on then... I haven't even had the first 1000 rooms from you yet. (Maybe you should have waited until this morning before posting! :P)

And the thought of having the perpetrator strapped down and receive acid in his face, in a controlled manner, is a pretty shocking image. Not that there isn't an animal part of me that finds satisfaction in this morbid way of carrying out justice.

Isn't this what this amounts to in the end? Revenge rather than justice? It may make the victim (of the original crime) and his family feel better, but what benefit is there to society? It can't be said that it acts as a deterrent either, because crime seems to be as widespread in the countries with this system of justice as in any other country.

By the way, modern theologians interpret "an eye for an eye" as "let the punishment fit the crime" rather than "let the criminal suffer what he inflicted on his victims", although in a twisted kind of way, it looks like the former interpretation is the one being used here.

Great to see you guys are back on track, I'm still confused on who's doing what, but I guess the credits will settle it. ;)

Thanks. Yep, it'll all be sorted out by then :) I say that the game is by Ben and me because he came up with the idea and we developed the story together. He also did the artwork for the inventory items and the cursors, and some of the backgrounds that he drew have been reworked by James.

Thanks, everyone, for your encouraging words. Progress is slow but sure.

Alarconte: The characters are temporary (they were drawn by Ben and the backgrounds were drawn by James DiGrizz). I am looking for someone to redraw them in the style that fits more closely with the backgrounds.

I've actually sat here for a while, trying to pronounce "draw-ring"... But I just can't. Could be a pronounciation thing having grown up talking Finnish, but still, I've never noticed such a phenomenon.

Boyd does it. He even has a joke about it. "What is the name of the invisible dinosaur? D'youthinkhesawrus"

Nice joke. To my ears, saying "saw us" without the intrusive "r" sounds bizarre and unnatural, even though, strictly speaking, it's correct (and of course the joke wouldn't work if that's what people did say).

Ahem, back to the topic at hand...

US English (except perhaps in New England) is rhotic, meaning that "r" is always pronounced wherever it appears in a word. In rhotic accents, "bar" and "baa" sound different. UK English as pronounced in the south of England is non-rhotic, which means "r" is only pronounced if it comes before a vowel sound. The "r" is pronounced in "rabbit" but not in "car", which means that "bar" sounds identical to "baa". (In pretty much all of the rest of the UK, English is rhotic.)

So when someone from southern England says something where a word ending in "r" is followed by a word beginning with a vowel sound, the "r" is heard (eg, "The bar is open" is pronounced like "The baa riz open"). This phenomenon is called linking "r" and is acceptable and standard. It is not wrong to omit the linking "r" and in very careful pronunciation, it is not heard ("The baa is open") . When there is a pause after the word ending in "r", there is no linking "r": in "I like it here. I think I'll stay.", there is no linking "r" at the end of "here" even though the word that follows begins with a vowel sound.

The problem is when words not ending in "r" are followed by a vowel, but an "r" is inserted. This is called intrusive "r", as Snarky says. Classic examples are "law and order" and "drawing",  - intrusive "r" makes them "law rand order" and "draw-ring". This is often considered incorrect because there is no "r" there to pronounce, but is very common.

Source: The Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar, 1994 edition.

It's a very difficult habit to break, actually, and a lot of people don't even realise they are doing it. I usually manage to say "drawing" without an intrusive "r", but it tends to sound hypercorrect or "posh"when pretty much everyone else around me says "drawring", and it is hard to monitor one's speech to listen out for "r"s that aren't there.

I was watching a TV programme (that spelling looks odd to me as a someone who writes computer programs for a living :)) made in Scotland, where English is rhotic. One of the characters was talking to another whose name was, let's say, Jessica. He shouted out her name and put an intrusive "r" on the end of her name, even though it was the only word he said. So either it can happen in rhotic accents too, or this was an actor with a non-rhotic accent who was just trying a bit too hard to sound Scottish :)

So when you hear "Obamarr riz talking to Gordon Brown", feel free to complain to the BBC! ;D Their standards of English have dropped greatly in recent years.

EDIT: Grr, the text-speech censor keeps changing all my Rs to "are"s...

EDIT 2: And I think it must have changed "...when you hear..." to "...when you here..." as well... at least, that's my excuse ;) :D

===============

Tracey hates her humdrum job at Insurance International, but it turns out there is more going on there than meets the eye. An unknown organisation is plotting a coup that will have catastrophic global consequences, and unless it can be stopped in time, the world will be brought to its knees...

Some screenshots for you (these will look different in the finished game):

Ben304 and I started work on this game not long after completing Trance-Pacific, so as you can see, it's been in production for a while. Ben was producing the graphics but unfortunately had to bow out, so the project stalled for a while. James DiGrizz has produced some great backgrounds for me, three of which are shown above.

Latest update (11 April 2016): Demo version released. Play the first few scenes of the game! Some features are not available in the demo and the artwork will be updated in the full version.

Big thanks to Paolo for his 10.000 lines Italian work!

Prego! Uffa, quanto lavoro! (You're welcome! Phew, what a lot of work!) I hope those of us on AGS who speak Italian enjoy it, and I apologise in advance for any errors that might have slipped into my translation.

Ah, the dreaded missing } error...

This means there is a missing } somewhere in your room script, but the compiler can't tell where. You'll need to go through the file carefully looking for where you have left out a }.
