Hints & Tips / Re: A Tale Of Two Kingdoms
Wed 18/07/2007 18:14:08
OK, I'm stuck big time...

Spoiler
* Princess Rhiannon is under a spell in the woods. The fox faery says I should be able to free her, but I don't see how.
* I can't afford the flute in the jeweller's shop (the miserly cow only gives me one ducat for the conch)
* I don't know where to light the lantern.
* I don't know how to get into the hole outside the ogre's lair.
* I don't see how to get a pumpkin.
* I can't get into the hole in the tree next to the ring of stones.
* I don't know how to help the pigeon with the broken wing.
* I'm not sure whether I can get the matches from the shop in the market.
* I've found the portal but can't get through it.

I have: sword; apples; acorns; parchment; love poem; conch; key; note from jeweller; unlit lantern; nail; self-bored stone; empty cider bottle; shovel; dagger; wounded pigeon; squirrel; bag of sand; horseshoe.

Any hints please? (Hints, not solutions.) Thanks very much.

The game has just crashed on me. Here's what I did:

Thanks for pointing this out. We shall release a v1.1 update shortly to fix this, and other miscellaneous issues brought up.

Note that this issue can be bypassed by clicking the arrow, rather than the hand, and then closing the inventory; thus it should not impede your progress.

That's good - I look forward to seeing the update. I suppose it won't work with games saved in v1.

Unfortunately the arrow does not do what I want - when I
Spoiler
click on the arrow and then the item, I temporarily have the item, but if I use the hand, I get a message that looks as if there is a message saying that the druid is giving the item to me [I'm particularly keen to get hold of that key and the self-bored stone], so the effect is not the same.
[close]
Thanks.

Update: Ah, I see now - I just need to use the item on myself.

The game has just crashed on me. Here's what I did:

Spoiler

* Talk to druid
* Select "Could you do something for me..."
* Go to inventory
* Click on hand icon
* Click on key
* Inventory remains open with message "You can ... like" obscured underneath it.
* Click to advance dialog.
* Game crashes with:

And I agree on the language - I'll comment more when I've finished the game. However, Storygamer, "ought" is OK ("ought" or "aught" means "anything", so "have you heard ought" is correct).

The game author sets the content ratings. Probably best to post in the Completed Games Forum thread for the game, or PM the author.

Thanks for that. I'll let the author know.

Where can I find
Spoiler
a power source for the "programator"? I had the battery in there at one point, but I needed it to open the door in the spaceship and now it is flat. Should I be recharging the battery somehow or using something else instead?

Thanks.

(Edit: No problem - I see this has already been answered on this page.)

What's the best way of challenging the content advisory of a game if you think it is incorrect? Who sets these - the game's author or someone else?

I ask because I'm playing Infinity String. Someone said in the reviews (which might therefore be the answer to my first question) that the violence rating should be increased from "mild" to "strong", and it looks like this has been done. However, the sex/nudity rating is "none", but I've just seen some -
Spoiler
in the cutscene where you teleport from the ice station to the jungle.

It's hardly explicit, but it might not be appropriate for work or for children.

So should I raise this in my review of the game, contact the author, or do it some other way?

Here's a complete walkyhhrough

Thanks, Dhawal, I'm sure a lot of people will find this useful.

Next time you post a walkthrough or any other spoilers, please ensure you put spoiler tags around it, [hide ] like this [/hide ] (but without the spaces after each "hide").

It might be a good idea for you to edit your post to hide the walkthrough (click on the "Modify" link above your post).

Yes, please do tell. I got 71%, so there is obviously more I could have done.

I'm quite surprised not seeing Princess Marian as a pick of the month at all. ;)
Which is why I want someone else to take over ;)

Before that happens, I would like to suggest "Nelly Cootalot".  :)

What? You mean to say Nelly Cootalot has not been Pick of the Month yet? What an oversight!

I'd like to propose the following plan of action:

* Nelly Cootalot is PotM for July;
* Trevor Daison on Outer Space is PotM for August;
* A link is added to the PotM page (above or below the "See previous Picks of the Month" link) that says "Nominate a game as a future Pick of the Month". This would link to a form that would submit a PM to SSH. Although there might end up being quite a few PMs to plough through, this would take some of the responsibility of choosing PotMs off SSH's shoulders. There could be a field in the form asking people to say why they are nominating the game, which would help weed out people nominating games that would be better nominated for a P3N1S award.

How does this sound?
#650
OK, I've had a reply, and it's "You can't, SSH chooses them."

I wouldn't dream of suggesting a mass bombardment of SSH's message box (which has a link to it at http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile;u=668 should you need it for any reason) with requests to make "Trevor Daison in Outer Space" the next Pick of the Month. If that were to happen, I couldn't possibly condone it. :)
#651
I see - thanks for letting me know. Well, I'm sending him two boxes of chocolates, so there :P :D
#652
Proximity,

Thanks for replying.

Don't be sorry about your mistakes - you have made a good game! But if you find the time to fix them, it will make the game even better.

If you would like me to translate the game I would be happy to do so. Send me a private message and we can discuss which languages you want and whether I can provide text in those languages.

Hm, so it seems there is a dead end in the game. Perhaps you could change the game so that
Spoiler
if you try to go through the seventh door without having picked up the coal and turned it into kryptonite, make Ali say, "I need to do something else before I leave", or something like that.

OK, review written.

I've posted a thread asking how to nominate Picks of the Month:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=31564.new#new

Hopefully someone will tell us (even if it's just "You can't - X does it").
#654
No doubt this has been asked 101 times before, but where can people nominate Picks of the Month? There's nothing on it in this thread: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=15411.20

There's a nice long list of past Picks of the Month but it would be great if there was a link to a page where future picks could be nominated. Or does someone on high decide which game is the next one, with no input from us mere mortals?

Thanks.
#655
Great, thanks for adding it to Recently Added Games - I'm off to give the first review!
#656
Beautiful, elegant graphics; puzzles pitched at the right level; and a fun, original storyline. Please, please, please add it to "Recently added games" so that we can all vote on it!

PS: I'm sure someone must have asked this somewhere before, but I can't find it anywhere: how do you nominate a game to be pick of the month? This one deserves to be July's.
#657
Thanks, mr.me, I'm playing it now.

Where do I find the
Spoiler
code for the transport box? The hint above says it's found nearby where the key is, so I'm guessing it's the date on the poster, leaving out the 0, as the keypad doesn't have one. But that doesn't work.

Found it.
Spoiler
It was closer to the key than I thought.

paolo, about the dead end you mentioned in the finished games thread
Spoiler

you can get a lump of coal on Mars, when you push one of the round rocks.
[close]

Sure, sthomannch, I realise that, but
Spoiler
what happens if you don't pick it up? You only need the diamonds to get through the door, or is it that the door doesn't open until you have the coal too? If that's the case, how does the door know? :) If you are still allowed through the door without the coal or you don't make it into kryptonite, then how can you defeat Superman?

#659
By the way, is there a dead end in the game?
Spoiler
If you don't pick up the coal on Mars or turn it into fake kryptonite, does that mean you won't be able to defeat Superman later? Or is it the case that if you don't get the coal or make the kryptonite, you won't be able to go through the seventh door until you have done so? If this is the case, how does the game handle the situation in which you try to go through the door without having made the kryptonite?

proximity (Fatih),

I've just completed the game and voted on it. You did a good job - well done! The graphics are superb. I'd like to make a few comments and recommendations, if I may:

1. You need a "Resume" option in the "Save/Load/Quit" menu. At the moment, if you change your mind or hit Escape by mistake, the only way to go back to the game (as far as I can see) is to click either "Save" or "Load" and then "Cancel".
2. Perhaps the
Spoiler
holes for the red and blue diamonds could be made clearer. I could see the holes for the green and yellow ones and put them in, but then I wondered why the door wouldn't open.
[close]
3. The conversations should update once certain actions or events discussed in that conversation have taken place. Example:

* Character A: "Can I do this?"
* Character B: "Yes, but you must bring me object X first."

(character A finds object X and gives it to character B)

* Character A: "Can I do this?"
* Character B: "Yes, but you must bring me object X first."

The conversation after B has given X to A should be something like:

* Character A: "Can I do this?"
* Character B: "Yes, go ahead."

There are several places in the game where this happens, such as
Spoiler
when want to get on to the roof of the cafe, when you want to go into the restaurant and when you want to get the cookie from the oracle, among others.

It looks like you have a bug with
Spoiler
the helmet - I found that it didn't move properly with the character on the moon, and on Mars, it was a long way from the character's head.
[close]
The simplest way to fix this would probably be
Spoiler
to have separate sprites for the character with the helmet on.

Yes, there are quite a lot of grammatical mistakes, unfortunately, but I don't think there were any that meant that the text can't be understood. If you want, I can proof-read the text for you and correct the English. Send me a private message if you'd like me to do this.

PS: I see that you mentioned you didn't have time for checking grammar. Never mind, but if you find time for it and still need someone to do it, I am available.

PPS: Please upload part 1 again so we can play it!
