Hints & Tips / King's Quest I
Tue 13/03/2007 18:27:53
I'm putting King's Quest III to one side for the time being and am now playing King's Quest I (why I didn't play this first, I don't know, but, unless I'm mistaken, KQIII doesn't seem to have anything in it that needs knowledge of KQI).

Spoiler

In the game, you meet the three characters who stole the magic items: the dwarf, the sorceror and the witch. Clearly you need to interact with them somehow to get the items back.

Get to close to the dwarf and he picks your pockets; talking to him is no help.

The sorceror will presumably cast a spell on me if I get too close.

The witch turns you into a gingerbread man.

Any gentle hints here, please? I have

Spoiler

golden egg, carrot, four-leaved clover, walnut (opened), pebbles, bowl, dagger, bucket of water

By the way, this game is really buggy - it seems to crash all the time and sometimes does not change rooms when I walk off the edge of a room. But that's an issue for another forum. I am playing it in the larger-sized window, which is apparently untested (why?) so on my own head be it, I suppose.

There wouldn't really be much point in a walkthrough. There's only one puzzle in the whole game, and so the walkthrough would just be the solution. You might as well say, "Has anyone got a walkthrough for this crossword puzzle?"

I suggest you talk to your father until he shows you the menu, and then study it carefully. Talk to him several times if need be to see the menu again. Work everything out on paper. Have another try or two at getting the orders right, and then if you're still stuck, have a look at the comment I posted in this thread:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=29813.0

This is a tricky game and it's unlikely you'll get it right first time. It took me a few goes.

Good luck.

I'm stuck on the wooden walkway now. I'm near the end of it (towards the top of the screen) but it looks like there might be a gap in it, which I keep falling down. Of course, it's too dark to see clearly. I can't teleport my way out either.

Hm, no, there was no gap after all, but where I am now I can't even see where I am walking (behind the blue stalagmites at the top left). I'm now saving after every successful step I take.

Is there an easier way to get to the end of the walkway?

Couple of bugs:

Spoiler
If I teleport from the top of the mountain and end up on the ground, it's still snowing... this probably isn't a bug, but presumably it would be rain rather than snow, given that you have just come walked off a tropical beach. Never mind, I'm just being picky - I can live with that one.

I teleported while I was on the top of the mountain (the room to the west of the cave, where there is the stream) and disappeared, wasn't teleported to another room, and didn't reappear. I have the saved game if you want to look at it.

It's snowing inside a cave too (not in the smelly cave, but the one that leads deep into the mountains).

I love the snow effect, by the way, especially the way it starts and stops - it's very realistic.

OK, I've got it.

Spoiler

You have to jump overboard from the top deck of the ship by going to where you see the hole in the deck and then jumping off the far edge of the ship. You can't jump off the stern.

Thanks, sthomannch, but that didn't quite work.

Spoiler

I'd heard "land ho!" (and "weigh the anchor", for that matter) and heard what the mice said about the treasure. I then used the sleeping powder and everyone went to sleep.

Using the stone just teleported me around the ship, even when I was on the stern. After a few teleports, the ship set sail again, even though everyone was supposed to be asleep! I thought the sleep was supposed to be eternal?

I'm trying to get off the pirate ship. I have my things back and they've dropped anchor. I've tried the various things mentioned above but they don't seem to work:

* Teleport - just gets you into trouble because you can end up with the cook, and there's no escape from him.
* Jumping overboard - I take it this means from the stern of the ship, as there doesn't seem to be anywhere else. Well, the shark is still there, and if I click on the water, it says that it's unsafe. I tried feeding the shark, but that didn't do anything.
* Looking at the map - I can see the beach, but don't seem to be able to get to it using the map.

If you hang around for too long, the ship sets sail again and you're doomed to being a cabin boy for ever.

So how *do* I get off the ship?

I got a reply from the IA boards:

"I might be wrong but i dont remember that the teleport spell required the spoon. Though is [sic] says one spoonful of salt, all you need is the salt, the mistletoe, the amber rock and the wand.

"Try it out."

Well, it didn't work for me. Maybe I was doing something else wrong.

Anyway I'm now

puzzling out how to get on to the pirate ship.

I went back to before I had cast the storm spell, and continued from there. Despite there being mud in the spoon, I managed to cast the teleportation spell successfully, and I still had the spoon of swamp mud. I could then cast the storm spell without any problems.

Looks like I did find a bug, then.

Thanks, Fizzii. I've posted a message to Infamous Adventures... let's see what they say.

Spoiler

I'll go back to before I cast the storm spell and see if I can cast the teleportation spell even though the spoon has swamp mud in it. If not, I'm going to have to go back to near the beginning of the game or start again.

strange, because for teleportation you do not need the mud.
[close]

That's right, but
Spoiler

I had a spoon with mud in it and used it to cast the storm spell. I then went to cast the teleportation spell, which I wasn't able to cast earlier because I didn't have the stone, but the spoon was no longer in my inventory.

Presumably I need to cast the teleportation spell first, which uses the spoon for salt and then, I would imagine, leaves it free for collecting swamp mud for the storm spell.

As it stands, it looks like I'm going to have to go back to a very old save game before I collected the swamp mud, losing 100+ points and a several hours of gameplay, or even start all over again as I have reused many of the save slots.  :( If I have to do that, at least I'll know what I need to do this time round and hopefully it won't take me too long to get back to where I am now.

I hope this is a bug rather than deliberate. If it is deliberate, it makes this game extremely unfair, in that an action you take early on can lead you to an unavoidable dead end much further down the line. I don't know if the Sierra games worked that way, and I appreciate that this is a remake of a Sierra game, but isn't there an unwritten principle that games made with AGS should be fair to the player?

Use square brackets, not round ones, for the "hide" tag.

Well, I was doing quite nicely until
Spoiler

I tried to cast the teleportation spell. I got killed because I didn't have a spoon. The spoon had swamp mud in it for the storm spell, and after I'd cast that I didn't have a spoon any more.

Does that mean you have to cast the teleportation spell before you collect the swamp mud? I hope not, because I'll have to go back a long way to get back to before I picked up the mud.

Does that also mean that you should only cast spells as and when you need them, rather than just casting them all in one go?

Or perhaps I don't have the right stone. I have the amber stone that the oracle gave me. Is that not the right one?

Thanks.

Fantastic, I've just managed to cast a whole load of spells!

Spoiler

I hadn't been to look at the spider's cave. Presumably there are things you need to find out about before you can cast the spells that help you with those things.

Let's hope I can hide them all now before Manannan comes back! :)

Yay, I've got rid of Manannan and I'm away!

Thanks. I haven't got that far yet.

By the way, it's [*hide] [*/hide] (without the *s) rather than [hint] [/hint].

I'll just get on with the dusting and chamberpot-emptying for now.

Where do I find the stone for the teleportation spell? Do I have to wait until I've got rid of Manannan before I can find it?

If you haven't deleted the game, I hope you'll give it another chance, because it's worth the effort. Here's a hint (well, the answer, really):
Spoiler

When back in the cell with the gruel, you can pick it up, but I don't think you'll need it. At least, I didn't find a use for it. You can eat it if you want to but I don't think it makes any difference if you do.

If I remember correctly, you should try using the door.

There isn't a walkthrough, as far as I am aware. Let us know where you are stuck and I or someone else might be able to help.

RichClairemont

The grabbing hand icon is used once or twice in the game, but most of the time you just use the "use" icon. The game is rather inconsistent in this respect.

Thanks paolo, I'll check out the manual maybe. I'm still shaking my head that pulling a feather off of a chicken and trying to walk into a house gets me killed in this game, but I suppose it's a Sierra thing. :)
[close]

Spoiler

Yes, it's because the chicken feather counts as a magic item. It will make more sense when you read the manual.

Once you know how to avoid getting killed (and there are many other ways you can die or get into trouble in this game with no way of going back other than restoring a saved game, alas) the game becomes more fun. Save early and often!

Ivy,

To get into the house, use the hand icon on the front door. No doubt you know that already - if you mean you get killed before you can even reach the front door, then you'll just have to use an earlier saved game or start again, and then do what I suggest in my post above. Sorry.

Ivy,

You need to read the manual (Manual.pdf in the game installation). This explains that you get killed if you have magic items on you, how to identify magic items in your inventory, and how to hide them from the wizard.

I know, I kept getting killed for exactly the same reason and couldn't work out why. It was very annoying, but things become a lot clearer once I'd read the manual.

I think this game really should suggest that you read the manual if you answer "no" to the question "Have you played this game before?" that comes up at the start, or say somewhere else in big letters "IMPORTANT: READ THE MANUAL BEFORE STARTING TO PLAY THIS GAME" (like above the download link or something).
