Ah, got it. It didn't work first time round, for some reason.

Someone else has already posted about this in the thread for the game in the "Completed Games" forum.

Spoiler

If you touch the darkness before the shaking stops, it works; if you don't, it doesn't.

Yep, I'm posting here despite the walkthrough, because the walkthrough doesn't make sense.

I'm right near the end, so skip this you're not.

Spoiler

I'm in the dark wearing the outfit. The walkthrough says to use the tarpaulin, but all I see is myself and the darkness.

A posting in the right forum now:

Spoiler

I can't get up to my room, or into the area that is being renovated, or anywhere other than the hotel in my car, so I take it I need to get in through the open window down the alley.

I have the broken hat rack, which looks suspiciously like a grappling hook. Where can I find some rope or a chain to complete it?

And a small hint: You don't need to use the sugar shaker on the molehill...;)

Heh heh, I thought not :D

I tried loading an earlier saved game. This time
Spoiler

I picked up the sugar shaker (using the "take" icon, not the plain "hand" icon) from my inventory and moved it over towards the molehill; even before I had had a chance to use it, the program crashed again.

The error is similar:

Another bug, I think:

Spoiler

When you use an inventory item on the molehill, it is appears repeated several times across the screen.

I'm enjoying this game - so much to do and explore!

However it crashed on me today - I've posted in the tech forum but, for your information:

---------------------------
Illegal exception

An exception 0xC0000005 occured in ACWIN.EXE at EIP = 0x00402423 ; program pointer is +5, ACI version 2.62.772, gtags (381,794)

AGS cannot continue, this exception was fatal. Please note down the numbers above, remember what you were doing at the time and notify CJ on the Tech forum.

Most versions of Windows allow you to press Ctrl+C now to copy this entire message to the clipboard for easy reporting.

I don't know if this is related, but there seems to be another bug: when I went to save the game, I selected a previously saved game to overwrite, and the game hung. I was running the game in a window and had to close the window to quit the game. I reloaded the game I was going to overwrite and got the error when carrying out the above action.

This might be a problem with the game - I don't know - but it has been reported as an illegal exception to be posted here. See after the message for the context

This happened when I used the sugar shaker in my inventory on the molehill.

Now, this may or may not be related to a problem with the game itself: I went to save "Earl Bobby..." and selected a previously saved game to overwrite. The game hung and I had to close the window to exit the game. I restarted the game, loaded the saved game that I wanted to overwrite, used the sugar shaker on the molehill and then got this exception.

Is it possible that the saved game got corrupted and AGS couldn't deal with it?

Edit:

Hm, reading the message about an illegal exception in Al Emmo, it looks like I should be informing the game author... so why then does the illegal exception advise users to post in the technical forum?

Edit 2:

Similar error when using an earlier saved game. I have posted a message in the completed games forum.

Try reading what I've posted above...I believe you'll find what you need.

I'd already done that, otherwise I wouldn't have posted.

Never mind, I'll look at the walkthrough.

I'm stuck in a similar place...

Spoiler

I've unlocked the machine containing the two vials and the cabinet containing the bottles of body parts. I've spilled the bowl of blood. I have the axe, lamp and book.

Where can I find a vial to put in the empty space in the machine? The other cabinets in the house don't seem to reveal anything useful.

Spoiler

It's possible that you have to take extra care with the rotations. When you rotate a set of four orders (or the two at the end), you'll see there are two arrows, one on the top and one on the bottom. In the Japanese version, there are also two arrows, one on the left and one on the right. It might be the other way round - I don't remember - but let's say it's as I have said it.

When you rotate by clicking on, say, the top arrow, if you click on the left part of the arrow, you'll see that you rotate the Japanese version one way. If you click on the right part of the arrow, the Japanese version rotates the other way.

So if you click on the wrong part of the arrow, while the orders move correctly, the coloured balls will move the wrong way in the Japanese version and things will mess up there.

The same applies when choosing colours - the stripes in the colour menu are horizontal in one version and vertical in the other. To get the colours the same in both games, you need to click on the part of the stripe that gives the same colour in the other version.

Now, it might be that this has nothing to do with it, but this was one of the things I took care with when playing the game.

Some tips on getting it to work:

Set the colours, as you are doing.

Work it all out on paper. Write down who wants what, and check carefully the orders that are imprecise (Chewbacca's, HAL's).

Check that the total nutrition of all the orders adds up to what it should be.

As there is no switch to change the leftmost two orders around, start by getting them in the right order. Then work left to right, getting the next pair of orders correct, then the next, and finally the last two on the right.

After doing the rotations, ask for everyone's order again and check they have the right order. (Kind of obvious, but it's easy to overlook this by the time you get to this stage and just hope you've got it right.)

There's also one item on the menu that only one person has - I think it might be one of the people who doesn't give a complete order.

I hope this helps.

You'll have already had the physics lesson about round things rolling. How do you stop a boiled egg rolling around on a plate?

Rubber gives a good grip.

Solution

Put the tyre on the seesaw and the snowman's head in the tyre. You will need to have cut the tyre down first, and before you can do that, you need to do something else.

Once you have done that, the puzzle isn't over - prepare to do a bit more thinking!

Put some sap from the tree on the carrot, then plug the leak with it. You'll need to use something on the tree to get the sap, but that's another puzzle.
