About categorizing: should we do a list of games not yet in any category and decide if they are short/medium/full/nonadventure so they are eligible for short/nonadventure category like last year?

I don't know if this messes up the panels workflow of rating games, but I think this is important.

That is a good point, Cat.  My game still hasn't been rated, but seems to have gotten generally high ratings by the reviewers.  I'm not sure though that it really matters in the long run since people who play the games will vote for it knowing the kind of game it is.  And since the author (or nominator) is the one responsible for nominating it to the categories he/she believes it is competetive in, it should automatically be listed in the categories it needs to anyway...

Not sure if that made sense, but my brain understands what I'm trying to say lol.

TL;DR - People who play the games know what categories they are in, and the person submitting the game knows what to ask it to be categorized in.

Time for my shameless plug for my release for 2011: Murran Chronicles 3 - The Lifedrinker of Landsdowne

The Murran Chronicles: Episode 3 - Lifedrinker of Landsdowne

Game Download Link (120mb):

Plot/Storyline
-------------------

Shortly after your adventure with the mystery in Montana, you are given a case involving mysterious deaths in Landsdowne, Massachusetts. The bodies of two men in their early twenties have been found recently, and according to local authorities both dead men looked to be in their seventies when their bodies were found. There is no explanation as both men were thought to be healthy, and in the prime of their lives. Add to this the odd reports of a pack of strange animals roaming the town at night, and you have your work cut out for you. Is there some sort of vampire creature on the loose as some of the town rumors suggest? What is behind the rumors of odd goat-like creatures that have been seen after nightfall? Are the two related? You are thrown into the midst of an age long battle between good and evil as you investigate the case of the Life Drinker of Landsdowne.

About The Game
------------------------

Life Drinker of Landsdowne is in 640x480 resolution, running in Hi-Color mode.   This game is more than twice as long as the second game, and contains much more content, many more characters: some with dynamic locations, and 3 different endings depending on the paths and choices you make as the player.

This third game in the series is the first to not feature the police cruiser as your primary mode of transportation.  Dust off those walking shoes, there is much to see in the town of Landsdowne.

This game will also feature something new to the Murran Chronicles: day and night cycles.  Explore the town during the day, and return to places as night for a whole new look at them.

Specs:

Total Playable/Interactable Rooms : 45 (More than 1/2 of them with Day/Night versions)
Additional cutscene/other Rooms : 23

Never saw the movie, so I don't know much about it, but I do know it is copyrighted material (Lion King).  And seeing as how Disney just released a 3D version of it, and I think it is, or was, on broadway, they might not want you doing anything with their intellectual property.  If it was some old and abandoned property from 20-30+ years ago, maybe, but I'd be leery of them sending a cease and desist.

I don't like the 2-button interface - feels incredibly chaotic and limiting.

For an RPG have a look at the context-based interfaces in Quest for Glory III (IV and V possibly too - I don't remember). I thought it worked really well.

I enjoy 2-buttons for standard adventure games, it is easier than finding the right interaction mode (maybe it is just lazyness), but I tend to agree with your comment about RPGs.  It adds a layer of depth and complexity (without being overly complicated) to an RPG.  I was thinking about it, and I really don't think I'd have enjoyed the Quest For Glory series anywhere NEAR as much with a 2-button interface, and they are my all-time favorite series of games.  Likewise, my Bake Sale game, Abner the Amazing (shameless plug) works perfectly with left/right click interface.  I think the full gambit of interaction modes would've not suited the game.

Good point about the battles!  I am also a fan of staged round-based battles.  The free for all clickfest, button mashing makes me cringe :)

Alrighty everyone, just curious as to your preference.  Consider this a poll without the GUI involved :)

If you were to play an adventure RPG (think along the lines of Quest for Glory), which type of cursor interface would you prefer?

1) Old-school Sierra with the Walk, Look, Use, Talk, Inventory on a taskbar/cycle via the mouse-clicks
2) Verb Coin interface
3) 2-Click interface where one mouse button looks at and the other interacts with the items

Which would you prefer?  Also, for those using the 2-click on any game at all, which layout do you like best?  Do you prefer left-click to look and right-click to interact or vice versa?  I've had beta testers on my Bake Sale game tell me they liked each of the two.  I was curious what the majority preferred :)

Thanks!

Never heard of it, but reminds me of a game similar to what you've described, called "Space Taxi".  I used to love that thing.  It was also DOS based.

BETA TESTING DONE: After a long and arduous process of breaking more stuff than I actually fix while the game was being Beta Tested, it looks like it is finally done.  There will be one more release of the game to the testers to make sure all is perfect, and Neil has a few more sprites to send over, but the game is about ready to have that lovely "COMPLETE" stamp placed on it.

BETA TESTERS NEEDED:  The deadline is looming for the Bake Sale, and I'm looking for a few testers to go over the game to make sure there are no huge problems.  I will be finishing the last of the game's GUIs and menus while testing is going on, but the game itself should be done within another day or so.  I am working on the ending sequence now.

If you'd be interested in beta testing, getting paid in peanuts and squirrel pelts, please let me know via PM or email.

Thanks!

My wife's family is from Colorado Springs.  Several of her aunts/uncles and her grandmother still live there.  It has the friendly midwestern USA feel to it from what I've heard (I have never been there).  I am born and raised on the east coast of the USA, right outside of Washington D.C., and I can tell a big difference in the people I've met who are from the midwest and Colorado Springs.  They are genuinely more friendly, open and honest and just more pleasant to be around.  I have no idea why, but it is a nice place to be.

I think you'll enjoy it.  I do know there are some areas in Colorado Springs with crime problems, so make sure you ask around and scout out living areas before settling on a place to rest your head.

Have you tried one of the other ports?  It might be a bad port...

The other thought is something wrong with that bus on the computer.  If you're usually using the USB ports on the front of the computer, try using the ports on the back of the computer.

The other thing you could try is updating the motherboard drivers, or reloading them.  SOmething might've gotten corrupted.

Hi all,

Just and update...

During the development of the game I've come to realize that Abner's awesomeness is overwhelming at times.  I am really beginning to get frustrated with him as I do all the dialogues in the game, because the guy is so over the top.  I'd slap him right in his amazingly handsome face if he were a real person.  The fact that his constant bragging and compulsive... uh... explanation of his many conquests... is making him likely the most interesting character I've ever had to develop for a game.

The game's music is done, I am working on the final 2 screens of the game, and then will be doing GUI work.  Once that is finished, it'll be ready for release in the Bake Sale pack.

**Edit**  Question:  Is it wrong to hate a character you create?  One who is genuinely a good natured person but whose personality makes you want to stab him in the face with a fireplace poker?  I feel kinda weird about it.

I don't think it's Dewey Cox, though that was an amazing movie.

Nice!  Gunna download it once I get home from work.   Do my eyes deceive me, or is that the famous "Foot Rock" in the background? :)
