Dammit Duals, you're confusing the newbies.

The Kyrandia games had (for their time) some of the most gorgeous artwork in a game (adventure or otherwise).  They really complemented the story well.

Why did the dev period have to be during the time that Skyrim is released?  I am getting it tomorrow, and fear I will neglect my submission for the bake sale (and everything else) to the point of my wife divorcing me....  Oh wait..

You need a good 80s montage to motivate you!

I was thinking the SAME THING!  I, unfortunately, don't have the tact or couth to ask in a polite way.  I'd have made some reference to carpeting or something.

My wife forwarded me this, and though it is a bit overly thought out, I am reposting it since it is funny nonetheless.

Aladdin: In one scene, Genie calls Al's clothes "so 3rd century."  Genie says he has been in the lamp for 10,000 years, so there's no way he could know of the fashion trends which have happened since he's been trapped.  Which means the latest Genie could've been trapped in the lamp is the 3rd century.  If he spent 10,000 years in there, it is now AT LEAST the year 10,300 AD when he gets out.

Conclusion: Aladdin takes place IN THE FUTURE.  A post-apolcalyptic world where only Arab culture (and some Greek) survived.  It has been so long that the name "Arabia" has been corrupted to "Agrabah".  The Muslim religion has atrophied to the point where there are no mosques, Imams, or prayer mats, but people still give praise to Allah in moments of happiness.  Amazing technological marvels left behind by the previous civilations, like sentient flying carpets or genetically engineered parrots which comprehend human speech instead of just mimicing it, are taken for granted by the locals or considered "magic."

The Genie proves this my making impressions of ancient, long-dead celebrities like Groucho Marx, Jack Nicholson, etc.

Scavenger, that is a VERY good point in my opinion.

I never thought about it, but I guess it is a forward and backward compatibility question.  I have no problem playing games with SVGA graphics, and if the reviews are good enough, I'll go back to EGA even.  But beyond that, I just don't bother.  It does pull from the game experience if the graphics are too bare boned.

I went back a while ago and replayed all my favorite point-and-click games of my childhood, Space Quests, Kings Quests, Quest for Glories, Police Quests, etc, and even the old EGA versions were amazingly fun because of nostalgia.  I remember being a 8-10 year old kid in the mid 1980s and LOVING those games.  But playing new content with 4-8 colors, well...  Probably not, since it isn't like visiting an old friend as the old Sierra titles are.

I found this to be a very insightful and thought provoking thread.  I just added a post about it to the AGS Blog.

I think those graphics are simply gorgeous, and that Iliya is right...  The people judging the games are not the audience we have in mind when we create them.  It is, however unfortunate, a necessary evil.  The games are games, and there are gamers who think the be all, end all of gaming is throwing a grenade into a bunch of toons, screaming profanity and griefing others.  If the graphics don't look like reality, it is crap.  We just shake it off and move on.  As long as the people who want to play these kinds of games find and play them, that is all we can ask.

Is it Mr. Mom?

Not sure, since Keaton looks a bit older in this pic...

**EDIT**  Realized cell phones didn't exist when Mr Mom was made, so forget that suggestion :)

Is it The Other Guys?

I didn't mean Zelda or Mana as an RPG, I was just referring to their visual styles, which is less realistic and more cartoony or artsy.

Speaking in terms of adventure games, what kind of RPG is your favorite?  More realistic graphics like Quest For Glory, or more cartoony like Secret of Mana or Zelda?  More modern setting like Deus Ex, or more fantasy like Elder Scrolls?

Or do you just dislike RPGs?  :)

If they wanted to make mad crazy monies, they'd go through the forums and package up tech questions/replies, articles, etc.  That would be the REAL money maker :)

But that would require effort on their part to compile it into a useable format.  Nevermind.

The boy who could fly?

Holy crap, I'm impressed.  Got that with just Jay Underwood and not even Fred Savage or Robin Lively.  Good job, you're correct.
