Wow, these are all fantastic so far!

I don't know how I'm going to judge them.  :o

Critics' Lounge / Help with side view
Thu 02/08/2007 04:37:50
I've gotten into making the side view of the character I posted earlier, but there's something funny about it that needs fixing. I can't quite work it out, though.

Without the arm it looks all right to me, in terms of the shape of his body, but when I add the arm it makes it look like he's sticking out his chest. That's what particularly concerns me, but any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for all your help, Prog. I'm going to try to use these as style guides to make the rest of the sprites for my project.

I'm much happier with these sprites than I ever would have been without your instruction.  :)

Rotation is a-okay with me, btw. :)

Not 100% sure this is okay to post here, but this is a site that has thousands of reference photos of humans and animals. I personally find them extremely useful and maybe someone else will too.

Okay, I came up with an idea so I'm going to run this one promptly after all.

RULES:

You may not:
-alter the line represented in black more than ten [10] pixels.
-increase the size of the canvas.

You may:
-use less than the total canvas as long as you use all of the black pixels.
-change the color of any or all of the black pixels.

The shapes represented in white (or the shapes corresponding to your 1-10 pixel edit of the black line) must be clearly recognizable in the final image.

Have fun!

Bonus for creative ideas and for boldest representation of the shape.

Had a go at incorporating ProgZ's suggestions, and tried redoing the other male character in the same vein.

I've gotten to the point where I can't even really tell the difference between changes I make anymore, so I'm posting them here for further suggestions/criticism.

I'm quite happy with the character on the left, aside from the terrible trouble I had with shading after I made his arms smaller. I shortened his neck rather than altering his shoulders, since I liked them.

The character on the right is getting there, but he's not quite what I want. I really don't want to exaggerate their traits too much because I don't want them to become caricatures, but I still feel like the right character lacks something. He's meant to be fairly uptight, and quite academic, but not overtly nerdy.

I also wanted to post a reference pic I used for the right character's outfit. The sweater is supposed to be light and form fitting, not baggy, but I'm having trouble shading it to look that way.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Aaaaah!

I had a ton of fun doing this but was hoping not to win.  :=

Congrats to Creed and Odysseus and yay for everybody that entered.

If Creed or Odysseus wants to host the next one, PM me.  :=  Otherwise I'll try to come up with something interesting.

Great game. I can't add a lot that other people haven't said, but it doesn't seem too easy to me. Some games are more puzzling than others, but this is one of those games where you want to find out what will happen, so moving along quickly isn't a problem.  :)

Those paintovers are really great, Prog. Right now I'm looking at them closely and trying to figure out what use I can make of them.

I think I'm going to redraw the sprites from scratch and try to be freer with the forms. It's hard for me because I tend to approach pixel pushing more like building with legos than drawing, but we'll see how I do.  :=

That's a sweet color/shading edit, radiowaves.

Unfortunately I think it's a step beyond me at the moment. I'm still struggling somewhat with the overall shape of things. Any advice there?

For what it's worth, I think your sprite is perfectly serviceable. It looks like what it's supposed to be, and that's all you really need, right? Everything else is just a matter of style and practice.

Believe me, I wasn't better than anybody when I started posting stuff here, and if I'm better than anybody now it's only a little and it's a complete accident.  :=

Here are three character sprites I've been working on for my current project. There are some things I really like about them, but there are a lot of things I've been struggling with.

2x

I really like the palettes of the two male characters, but I hate the palette of the female character. If anyone has any suggestions in that direction I would love to have them.

How can I make their stances more natural-looking? How can I shade them better?

I would really like to make the two male characters appear less buff, though i can't figure out how to do it at this scale.

I'd also love to hear how I could fix their right arms.

Lastly, I tried to get some contrapposto going with the guy on the left, but it didn't turn out so well. If possible, I'd like to preserve or improve it because it fits his personality.

Any advice is appreciated.

EDIT: Here's an update of my progress so far on the main character sprite.

2x

Original/ProgZ's edit/Revision

I liked ProgZ's boot heel, so I kept that, and generally tried to make the shape freer and more natural like the stance of ProgZ's edit. Once I was feeling really free, I decided to elongate him by a couple of pixels and exaggerate his trimness.

I also experimented some with adding blue to the darker skin tones and yellowing the lighter ones a little bit. Lastly, I added some yellow to the lightest shirt shade.

This is a really neat topic. Unfortunately, my only idea is a hall of mirrors, which is far beyond my ability to pixel. :/

I hope more people are planning to get entries in.

That's pretty much what I meant, yeah. Bald heads catch a lot of light unless they're covered in makeup or something.

I made a paintover, but I hesitate to post it because what you have there pretty much gets the bald thing across with no problem.

I'll post it anyway, just in case it's useful at all. I monkeyed with the skin tone a little to get a higher contrast, and added a darker shade to the outfit.

If you want him bald, rather than having a buzzcut (which is what it looks like to me, now), I would suggest shading the head, or at least giving it a highlight. Unfortunately this would necessitate one extra shade on the whole sprite, though.

Maybe I'll try a paintover and see if it's useful at all.

This is a great first effort. You simulated the sniping zoom in AA admirably, and the game was extremely atmospheric. I really felt like I was in WWII.

Love is an illusion! Only games matter!

I must have this game.  :(
