I really like this style and I think it looks great.

Since you're asking for criticism, though, I think the textures of the water and grass could be made more different. I think they're meant to blend together in a swampy sort of way, but to me it just makes it hard to tell quite what you're looking at there.

Everyone's favorite cold-blooded, hip-shaking secret agent.

And here's one without the text:

I agree with Angel Dust about the sky in the background, but man I really REALLY enjoy the style of the background art. I would love to play a game that looks like that.

Yeah, and I tried unzipping it straight to C instead of nested inside various other things after it didn't work the first time when I extracted it to where I generally keep my AGS games. Same deal, though.

When I try to run winsetup, I get the following message:

Error: Unable to launch 'BJ7.exe'. Make sure that the file is in the same folder as this Setup program.

Try running "game.exe --setup" from the command line.
(Open the start menu, type cmd, press enter, then navigate to the dir.)

This totally worked, thanks man. Now I can set it to run in windowed mode so it'll run. You guys are boss.

I should say at the start that I'm not a tech guy.

I've had a lot of problems with Vista since I got this new computer a few months ago, and if I had XP discs I'd have gotten rid of it a long time ago.

Anyway, I was trying to play the new BJ game, which is one of those setup for 320x200. I searched the forums and found out you have to set these to 640x400 to run in Vista.

But I can't get winsetup to open on any of the AGS games on my hard drive. Attempts to open them prompt an error message saying it can't access the game exe, and to make certain it's in the same directory. Of course they are, since that's how compiled games come. I tried XP compatibility mode with both files with no luck.

I'm stumped and irritated and gloomy. Assistance would be much appreciated.

I've taken Questionable's advice and upped the contrast on the edges of the head slightly to read better at the original resolution.

And thanks ShonenAiGuy!

The revised version, incorporating Mash's edit:

Thanks for the comments everybody.

He has grizzled stubble, which I hope will be clearer on his portrait.

His shoulders were too far back, but I think that's largely addressed by MashPotato's edit.

I really loved the edit, btw, and I'm now in the process and incorporating it into the draft I have. I'll post the results when I get a chance.

Mostly I need help improving the body shape and stance, and in communicating the clothes better. He's supposed to be wearing Victorian-style flat-front trousers and suspenders, and the sleeves on his shirt are rolled up to the elbow. He's also intended to be fairly thin.

Any comments/suggestions are welcome.

I was interested in participating in this jam, but I have yet to find an extant post-1940s invention that lends itself well to spriting and catches my imagination beyond the obvious (and therefore uninspiring) computer or stealth bomber. How do you sprite magnetic resonance imaging, fiber optics, or oral contraceptives? What could Wells' take on super glue have been?

I like the GUI a lot. The one thing that bothers me is that continuations of the strokes beyond the lines they cross feels kind of busy and they don't really go anywhere. I think the basic shape would give the same idea and be alot cleaner.

I actually think this is a fascinating idea, darkness and all, and even if it doesn't succeed swimmingly, I think it's great that somebody had such an original idea and took the time to realize it with AGS.

I think the bush looks great too.

But I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that now you have a light source over the door but the whole area is in shadow.

The feet and hands look good to me. I think his body should rotate from side to side (if you want to include that movement) rather than translate from side to side.  Have you considered having him bounce up and down a pixel at the height of the walkcycle?

I also can't help thinking his hair could benefit from some highlights since the rest of the sprite has solid shading.

It was obviously a difficult decision given the staggering number of entries, but the winner is: Alarconte because I love the colors and the imaginitive subject!

I actually loved S-Made's sprite, too, but there can be only one winner...  :'(

I like this style and the progress so far has been neat. My only gripe is that I've never seen a hotel room with the sinks outside the bathroom like that.  :=

Yay! Great entries, guys. Extended to June 1 for Indieboy and anybody else in his situation.
#59
It figures the one time I host, nobody enters.  :=

I can extend this a couple of days if people are working on sprites, or else pass it over to someone else? Reply if you've got something in the works!

I really like it. One of the things I hate about a lot of sites is how freaking difficult it is to find what you want. I don't forsee that being a problem with this layout, and as was already said, the colors are very nice. I also like the cleanness of the shapes and text.

The only small issue I have is that some of the icons inside the buttons don't seem to be ideal for what they represent. The letter 'A', for example, doesn't really convey the idea of charts.
