I don't like issues brought on by video playback either but all engine ports must have the exact same capabilities.

Also what do you mean by non-existent options available under Linux? How is any of this specific to Linux? You can't play many formats without installing codecs on Windows and you can install them on Linux as well (again, gstreamer plugins for example). How exactly is that in any way limited? Or why would it be any less problematic to play patented formats on Windows? You can make the engine optionally dependable on any set of packages providing the desired functionality, which kills all birds with one stone, getting rid of the licensing/patent issues responsibility from the developer in particular.

Also is it possible to implement your suggestion for an existing game? I converted a video file to theora and replaced the original with it but it still doesn't play it.

edit: I'd like to note though, that I do understand why limiting video support to theora on all platforms is a good way to move forward and agree with it, though. If that's the case with the current engine, fair enough. I still need help with getting an old game with mpeg-1 video to work if possible, by converting videos or else. Additionally I just remembered that video playback didn't work for me either in Ouroboros even though that game did use theora encoded videos. So I'd like some clarifications on that too. I mean, you still haven't directly answered my original question. I'm using 3.3.0.1158. Is that not recent enough?

I see, thank you.
Well, I hope proper video support is at least on some sort of to do list somewhere.

Loved it. It's now one of my favorite games of all time. The only disappointment is how little all the choices ultimately matter. But it's an exciting and interesting journey nonetheless.

Sacrificed Arcadia Bay. I totally loved Chloe so it was an easy decision for me as well. Didn't romance her though. Didn't romance Warren either.

I think the default should be $XDG_DATA_HOME and %AppData% with user (but not the game scripter) being able to override it with an arbitrary directory in the setup program if they desire.

Having said that, what I'm currently doing in my engine is, I'm having it discern between two installation styles: a "proper install" and an "archive dump". If no system-wide modifications have been made and all files are in one directory as would happen if you just extract stuff from an archive then it puts all the state files there as well, but if there are signs of a completed installation process (basically it'll mostly be just some special file or two in $XDG_DATA_HOME / %AppData%), then saves go to those proper system-specific directories for user data. I'll most likely add the option for the user to specify custom save path as well at some point.

Are videos supposed to work in the Linux port yet? I've seen some mentions of it using gstreamer when doing a cursory search but I can't even see MPEG-1 videos even though I have all the gstreamer plugins installed. Is it looking for some specific version maybe?

Congratulations to all winners, good show all around!

I want to personally praise Dislocation, which seems to not have won any popularity votes, but it definitely won my heart. The cheeky defiant intentionally idiotic humor completely won me over and firmly planted a grin on my face. In other words I loved it the most. Would love to see more of that silliness.

Well, seeing as I've completely switched to exclusively using Linux with absolutely no regrets, it's an easy nope for me.

While hardcore platformers aren't exactly my thing, I love Dualnames' sense of style and imagination and I'm very excited to see the final result of my dear friend's project. :) I'm watching the development of this game with a lot of interest. I'd wish some luck but with these determination and skill those guys don't need it.

Figured it with the help of a friend but thanks.

Did run into an actual bug right afterwards though. Sadly, couldn't reproduce it so don't know what triggers it.
Spoiler
Couldn't switch to Regis while in the Trance with Baxter and the "ghosts".

Finished the game. Very pleased. Excellent complex storytelling with a lot of nuance and originality. Other aspects were very solid too, the art, the voice acting, the music are all very good. There was some silliness too, that I mostly associated with having to have gameplay and making the player feel badass, but I could nitpick all day long. It's still one of the coolest story-driven games of recent time and I'm generally satisfied with it. So if I had to pick one serious criticism it'd be this:
Spoiler
The game lets you side with Nina but not with Galatea despite Galatea's idea sounding kind of much more reasonable and generally arguably pretty good, the sacrifices aside. And since those had already been irreversibly made, there was no reason not to genuinely consider her option. Even if it still required sacrificing Latha, it could be a decision she could possibly make herself. But that's just how I feel anyway, I still respect the author's judgment of what the characters would be willing to do in a given situation.

Love the graphical style, the promise of cynical humor and the Linux support. Will be looking forward to this.

A very interesting and fresh work. Aside from a few technical issues, I really enjoyed it. I particularly liked the original lore. Though personally, I'm not a huge puzzle lover, so while the puzzles were fairly well thought-out, I'd prefer more lore, dialogue and interactivity than puzzles. However, there is no doubt in my mind that I'd like to see more of this sort of thing. Well done!

Fair enough. Consider me sold, I suppose. :)
(I wouldn't name it exactly the same if that's the case but yeah, it's your game. I'd radically update already released games if I saw fit though, so I guess this opinion isn't worth much.)

I don't want to be a negative Nancy, but... I liked Downfall and I liked The Cat Lady much more, so... personally I'd much rather see a completely new work by you. Is this remake worth playing for someone who doesn't really want to play Downfall again, is it different enough? Regardless, I respect you as an author and wish you the best with this project.

Thanks Crimson Wizard, that was it!

(the override hack doesn't work though)

Dualnames' game Until I Have You has a parallax scrolling effect which is according to him is implemented using a trivial module, but the effect doesn't work in any Linux binaries of AGS I've tried, including a binary I freshly compiled myself from the current revision of the git repo and binaries pulled from The Cat Lady and A Golden Wake. Any insights?

it is just that you need enough people doing the hard work for you so it becomes possible to live as an artist or a philosopher... That's why civilization is based on slavery. Slaves can be substituted by machines, but it is not that simple.
Yeah, because there is, like,  no way people can help each other out or divide their duties without slavery, right. Absolutely impossible. When I need my friends / associates to do something for me I always enslave them first and vice-versa.

Also I love how you imply that artistic work is the EASIER kind of work. That's so hilariously telling about your grasp of what you're talking about.

Just one example of just how bollocks your reasoning is.
