on abstauber's hunch, is it Fascination?

That game made me laugh heartily from start to finish and adore it deeply. I endorse Jack Trekker madly. The charm is irresistible. I'd like something more like this please.

So that I can rip some more mad hardcore indie gaming in it. Bro.
BOOM!

Personally, I don't like the palette of the game much.
BUT
I still very much appreciate the unique look and looking forward to discovering more of it in the game. There's little I like more than games that look, feel and play like nothing else. And to me cyberpunk and adjacent genres are like home. So you've definitely piqued my interest. Good luck with finishing it.

Those Legend games are so tricky to guess
Depends on the exposure to them I'd say. :P

Woo! Alriiiight, time to stop pretending to gloat like a self-important prick for giggles and actually gloat some!

Again, thanks to everyone who votes for us. :) Developing the game and entering OROW was a blast. Not to mention how motivating it was. We've already started working on a new game.

I'll post the soundtrack in a short while.

Nope, nope, nope.

Abstauber, you're getting closer though.
Time to try to make it easier I suppose.

Pfff, who cares, neither of these games has WON, has it?

:=

A sci-fi-ish/post apoc drama-ish game? With possible mystical elements? By Ben AND Grundislav? Hell yes! DO WANT as they say. So, when is the Steam release? I want my achievements and trading cards and everything.

 8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)

I'd like to take a moment from all the gloating and say... guys who made The Crystal Ball, Jack Trekker and The Tattoo Room, I loved your games to bits. I want to kiss you all right in the face. (creepy, I know, but I co-designed Girl and Rabbit, so don't tell me you didn't see this coming)

Especially The Crystal Ball. It was my personal favourite in every aspect. Hell, the music was so moody and fitting, if only it was original, I'd nominate it for best music too without second thoughts. Oraxon, you have my utmost respect along with interest in your further gamemaking endeavours. Quite saddened by seeing your game not win anything, as in my eyes it was the best.

Also The Rebirth was damn splendid, but Grundislav doing splendid things goes without saying, so I'm going to mercilessly underplay it like that.

Having said that, my music didn't even get into top 5? The soundtrack of Butler Didn't Do It didn't win the music award? Bah, you guys clearly have no taste. :P

All in all, it was an honour to compete alongside such great entrants! And I heartily thank all who voted for us. Perhaps later I shall join the discussion and provide some more verbose mini-reviews. But now if you excuse me, I have to return to ecstatically, triumphantly pouring champagne all over my body and practicing the condescending stare of superiority.

Aw man, and here I thought I'm giving a hardish game. I'll be less merciful the next time. :P You're absolutely correct.

Not to somebody who's in love with the game to the point of unhealthy obsession!

Anyway,

Legend of Kyrandia: Book One, Timbermist Woods (if memory serves), under Brandon's Treehouse. Amiga port, if I'm not mistaken.

I love the look and feel of old school top-down RPGs-- the exploration, the use of tiled graphics to map out huge worlds, secret paths and caches. I love it as a medium for storytelling.
But I just cannot stand the constant grinding, fighting and leveling up. To me, it's a repetitive, artificial waste of time that brings gameplay to a halt. I've never finished an RPG, because the mechanics are just so uninteresting to me. Even something like Zelda's fighting just feels like a distraction from more intriguing stuff.

Does anyone know of any games that lack those elements and instead focus on exploration, interaction with the environment, and more nuanced problem-solving? Basically, an adventure game with a more open world? I'd really love to try that. Most adventure games' locales are rather constrained by the challenge of individually painting each background. The freedom of a tiled system would really seem like an adventure world-designer's dream. So why is the best example I can think of, uh... Yoda Stories?
First of all, I'd like to say I share your desires. And it pains me how little games there currently are that can satisfy them. (I intend to fix that, though)
Secondly, I second Planescape: Torment. It is pretty much better than most adventure games are at what adventure games are the best at. The sense of discovery in it is immensely wonderful and satisfying.
Then, there's Anachronox. Not as broad at exploration as some other games, but the fusion of exploration, amazing storytelling, lots of wonderful optional little details... is indescribable. The combat is entirely cosmetic and again, another game that while not being strictly speaking an adventure game outdoes adventure games at their most strong points.
Then perhaps you should try the classic Little Big Adventure. It has lots of action but it's still an adventure thing at heart and it has a vast world that greatly exceeds what adventure games usually offer.
I wish I could name some more. :(

Death Gate comes to mind; it has a bit of the RPG paniche but plays as a true adventure game- to name an example, there is a spellcasting system but it's actually used to solve puzzles or *avoid* combat.

It's ancient, and can be found on most abandonware sites, too: http://www.abandonia.com/games/525/DeathGate
Eh, what? Death Gate is an adventure game plain and simple, made by Legend who were really good at making adventure games. And as amazing and recommendable it is indeed, there is nothing RPG-esque about it at all, there was no combat whatsoever, and the amount of locations in it doesn't really make it suitable to satisfy the desire for exploration. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy that you like and recommend Death Gate, it's one of my most favourite adventure games and I consider it a must play, but I respectfully disagree on its relevance in this context. :)

When I played the games from the latest OROW I was surprised by how many satisfying and fun games there were. Thus I implore you all, play them too and then vote, my dearest respected fellows! Hopefully the epic trailer above will provide a decent incentive for doing so!
