lennon, if you decide to buy it and try it out after all, please then tell us about your experience with it. :)

To be honest I think it's a mistake to present this as a MI fangame. It sounds like a relatively decent concept, and even though it draws obvious inspiration from MI it could stand on its own legs if done well. Of course as an avid MI fan you may see it differently, but naming it "Manky Island" just for the sake of a reference on top of the already obvious homages seems really unnecessary and silly to me.

Also not being able to choose your crew after all that effort may be frustrating (and yeah I know it's played for comedic effect, but this kind of plot device has been done so often in comedic adventure games, it's more frustrating than funny). But if you can actually use your developed skills at least in the crew you get, it could still be quite fun.

This could be seen quite optimistically in my opinion.
I may be weird for preaching detachment from AGS to AGSers on occasion (and I may also be biased as someone developing their own engine), but I like to believe that the AGS community has always been more about creativity, shared interests and well, community, than just attachment to a piece of software. Therefore even if the fate of AGS as software seems really grim after this post (and frankly it does), the community doesn't have to follow it into the grave. There are only so many ways this could unfold but all of them could be handled gracefully, be it a centralized community project of further AGS development or several "competing" alternatives. It's all good really. And I hope that after hearing it from CW maybe people will finally face the simple truth that as the time passes maintaining AGS becomes a less and less sensible idea that simply developing a similar solution from scratch, especially if it's not actually from scratch but utilizing powerful components such as (for example!) SDL, Lua etc. After all, the way I see it, the only really valuable and non-trivially-reproducible part of AGS is its user friendly IDE. Everything else would take very little effort from any competent programmers to make.

Which is also why I'm quite intrigued by the idea of a project to develop an engine-agnostic IDE, perhaps aimed at the point and click adventure paradigm for a start. The ability to develop a game in a user-friendly IDE and then produce it using more than one engine with only minimal adjustments would empower and benefit everyone, the engine developers, the game developers and the players. It's not easy to pull off, but it's not exactly impossible. Provided the underlying engines are suffciently flexible, it's just the matter of standardizing a couple of abstraction layers. I'm not gonna pretend I'm crazy about all the work it'd still entail but the benefits are really tempting. (If you want a really easy implementation of this without any actual tight engine integration, it's possible to just make an "adventure scene designer" that exports your room designs into xml or something and then have willing engine developers support easy importing of those.)

Just saying.

Honestly? I'd say if you actually legally own 3 copies of MI you're fully entitled to quickly downloading it from some abandonware site in a time of need with no remorse.

Does it have to be the Special Edition? There are some debug commands in ScummVM's console (opened with ctrl+d) that could possibly assist in an accelerated playthrough.

Yeah, I admit I've actually only used it for streaming. But I was impressed by how well it works and how lightweight and fast it is even when streaming, so I thought it's a safe assumption it'd work even better if you're just recording to your harddrive.

Also thanks for posting your linux workflow, may come in handy if I decide to record some games on linux. :)

Oh okay sweet XD yeah I've been wanting to do some Let's Plays myself with some AGS games but I'm pretty ignorant to which screen capture/audio recording programs I will need to pull it off as simply as possible without sacrificing quality. I've tried Hypercam but the playback was mega laggy and it also affected my gameplay sometimes and would just stop recording for no reason and with absolutely warning  :-X. So hours of gaming were instantly lost T__T
On Windows I can recommend Open Broadcaster Software. It's pretty swell.

Speaking of cyberpunk games, anyone know of some cool point n' click adventure games within the cyberpunk genre? Gemini Rue is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.
Yes. :)
old: Blade Runner, Culpa Innata, Circuit's Edge, Beneath A Steel Sky, Bloodnet: A Cyberpunk Gothic, B.A.T., Rise of the Dragon, Dreamweb
AGS: Technobabylon 1, 2, 3, Keptosh I: Search for Junc

Those in bold are especially cool. And I have finished all those in bold at least so I know for sure.

Also cheers for those who decided to participate in the jam!

Well, if you want on-topic discussion...

I mean no disrespect to Mandle, the post is clearly well-intended, but to be honest I find the idea of being mentioned on silly Wikipedia an honour quite funny. And not only because I have a grudge against Wikipedia for their methods, the deletion of the page for Ben Jordan series and general uselessness and inadequacy in any specific area of knowledge beyond the very basic level.

But also because... I mean being mentioned on Wikipedia can only mean one of the following two things:

  • some random guy or gal who likes you/your stuff managed to sneak a mention of you/your stuff past the pedantic fun-hating wiki moderators and they weren't vigilant enough to spot and delete it... yet
  • it's actually mentioned so much outside of wikipedia that it's actually "notable" by Wikipedia standards, which in turns means it's already so well-known that a mention on Wikipedia AS WELL adds essentially nothing

Is it true that it has been pretty much glue sticked together with the assets stolen from various games and movies? By just three guys.
Yeah, virtually all the backgrounds are stolen from all over the place. All the characters seem to be original though. Also as far as I know the designers of the game claimed that they had no idea this was the case, because whoever agreed to make graphics for them did this without their knowledge.

I never played it but it's supposedly the worst adventure game of all time.
I'd say it's far from it. I mean it has its flaws, obviously. But it's also absolutely hilarious both intentionally and unintentionally most of the time. And the curiousity factor is also high due to its unique and bizarre nature. So, I'm afraid, I must admit I've rather enjoyed every minute of that game I've played and I still intend to finish it someday.

It contains all of the above, but BenX got it first.

The rational version of the story: an introvert decided to go do something else elsewhere with no hard feelings, the end.

I was torn between "monster" and "height" simply because those associated illustrations got my creative juices flowing the most and I instantly got a handful of ideas that I could really work with (laugh)

But ultimately I voted on height. I love massive cyberpunk metropolis type stuff.
Yeah, those two are easily my second choices.

Has anyone seen that new show Almost Human? Karl Urban from the Judge Dredd remake is in it. That and Continuum pretty much curb my scifi cravings in terms of television. Would really love a full blown cyberpunk show though. That'd be epic.
Haven't seen those. I wouldn't say no to a full-blown cyberpunk show either to say the least.

Wow... I genuinely thought that was a clever joke answer until I googled it!!!!
I'm so totally making a game called I Genuinely Thought That Was A Clever Joke Answer Until I Googled It.

Hell yes. :) I voted for shadows. I probably wouldn't if I was voting for just words, but it says "the theme will be based on 80s illustration voted on below". And that pic is just... damn, it's so pretty. :> You?

Yeah, 10 days is actually rather generous as far as jams go.

Which is kinda of a reason why I never manage to participate  :=

And my god: I shouldn't spend this much time on proof reading... (wtf)
I believe you misspelled "proofreading", sir.
