Hints & Tips / 5 magical amulets - part 2
Mon 13/09/2010 20:39:13
Hi,
I am playing 5 magical amulets, and I am in the middle of the 2nd part.

I know it's not an AGS game (but created with Wintemute, I think) but anyway it is such an entertaining amateur game that it would be a pity not to play it to the end...

Being stuck (trying to get bread to the bear, get rid of the wasps, make a recipe for the sea fairy, etc.) I tried to resort to a walkthrough only to arrive at the following doubts:

(Attention! some of the info on these questions may turn them into spoilers...)

1 - At the housewife's garden I am supposed to see a blue cloth hanging from a cloth's line. Well, there is none - what is supposed to trigger the blue cloth???

2 - I already have the earthworm, which is supposed to be given a mole or a molehill... Where is such a molehill? I tried to find it near the gipsies, to no avail...

Help... and thanks.

Huh,
I've been gone from the forums some 6 months now. Ditto for working with AGS! Sometimes it feels like drowning, like not being able to breathe, and with fear of not getting back to game creating again, ever.
So this post is not a definite return - it doesn't deserve any reply, either -  but just a personal note, a personal motivation not to leave for sure... I will get back to AGS forums again, and more important than that, I will finish my present game...! Not sure when, though,

I don't know if this was already thought about or not, but is there any way of the main char having two (or more) inventory sets?

Critics' Lounge / 1st person view bg
Mon 23/02/2004 10:40:30
Well, my game will be a 3rd person view, but will have some "zoom views" in 1st person - maybe! - like this one...

It looks Ok, maybe a bit soul-less, and I used several free objects (like the phone, the pen, the sofa or the lamp) which I will probably redo just to make them my own... I am doing OK using 3d - I'm an average user, I guess - no brilliant stuff but nothing that hurts the eye, either - this time I can't say what's wrong with it, but I am sure it could be improved with "something"... any suggestions?

I am playing with no sound... what's the solve for the safe puzzle?
#6
Here's a pretty close to final interior scene...

However, I am not sure if the contrast between the two parts of the room is too exagerated with the moss and all that... Also, I am needing some suggestions in terms of objects to put there (only the card board boxes and wood planks are insufficient I think) ... The ceiling (and the colums) textures is also a bit strange but I didn't have better ideas

In any case, thanks for other C&C...

Also, two other WIP scenes - only I don't know which of the walls looks best...

Currently, if I'm not mistaken there are
four location types
0 nothing, GUI or inv
1 hotspot
2 char
3 object
would it be possible to have new ones? like 4 for region? or even subdivide the type 0 to separate nothing, GUI and inv, although this could mean trouble with "legacy" games...

I was wanting to have a log - available during play - that recorded the dialogues (all the dialogs, some ofthe dialogs, a brief description of the dialogs, it doesn't matter) so that I could option-off all dialogs topics once they were spoken but let the players review past dialogs (without leaving the game - that's the hard part, I guess, since I would have to have some kind of text editor, something like notepad, that would allow up-and-down scrolling).

(I've been "playing" with File I/O functions but, so far, they don't seem to be the answer I look for)...

Anyone ever done something like it? Anyone has any clue on what steps should i pursue?

Do you know where (internet site) I can get/order Conspiracies and Black Mirror (in english or french, or spanish or portuguese)?

I mean an european location, since if I order from the US, most probably than not, I'll have to pay (some 100 EUR) customs fees...

Hints & Tips / keptosh - where is ServaCor?
Fri 12/09/2003 11:50:44
Nice game, makes me recall BASS!

I have everything I need to go to ServaCor (I checked the WT) but I don't seem to figure out where that is?

Hints please!

Several people asked me about the inventory and general interface I used in The Uncertainty Machine. The actual scripting is nothing to write home about, in fact it's messy enough, but I put it up for download for anyone who wants to use it (and improve it).
It's pretty basic stuff, so it's no use for anyone except beginners, but in any case it's at

www.freewebs.com/ratracer/mygui.zip - it's some 800KB

(the allowed bandwidth at freewebs is pretty narrow, so it is not unexpected that the download won't be allowed from time to time)

It's not compiled, it was done in AGS 2.54 and to exit you press F1 for the default save/load/quit menu...

GUI 3 is the one that contains the inventory bar
GUI 4 is for the label that follows the cursor and displays the name of hotspot, objects, inventory items, characters...

the ocasional comments in the global script are meaninless to most, I guess, they'll be in portuguese, most of the time

Although I'm reasonably happy with the modelling and texturing of the mansion, as usual I'm having trouble with lighting... as I am pretty bad with it, I usually keep simple - one or two lights that as far as I go without getting too much confused...

How's these? (don't mind much the shadows since those will be corrected...)

this one is wrong since the mansion is too bright

I adapted and simplified the lighting I borrowed from one of the www.vocanson.com excellent FREE models but even so...

I just threw two omni lights - will have trouble with shadows and stuff I'm sure

just one skylight light and lighttrace , tried those for the first time - trouble is the rendering is 12 minutes (instead of the 1 minute of the others) - it makes the stones look a bit plastic though

Critics' Lounge / Lost for lights...!?
Thu 19/06/2003 23:21:35
I'm trying to have a decent lighting for the scene(s) below... It's supposed to be at dusk or at night, so interior lights are on (and no sunshine from outside)...
The first 3 pics are more clean; I did them in earlier stages (but now, I am not sure if they aren't better like that).... The other 4 are supposed to translate better that this is a room whose maintenance stopped some 10 years ago...

Don't mind much the textures (specially those of the desks) since what I am trying now is to have a decent lighting (more or less belieavable and ADEQUATE for a game background)

I'm only showing the best of the bunch (I tried more than 20 different light configurations) and I really need your opinnion and critics since, after all so many experiments, I don't know what to think of them anymore...

1. I really don't like this one

2. Pretty much the same as the first, but with more lights which I think makes it better....

3. I didn't like it at first, but now - one week after doing it - it probably is better than most...

4. The wall textures are probably a bit exagerated... is it too dark?

5. this one really stinks IMO

6. will this become even worse whence I put more objects in the scene?

7. is it too dramatic and exagerated ? or is it  acceptable in a game?

Please tell me which one - concerning the lights (everything else is to have more work into it) - the best, or if they all are hopeless...

Critics' Lounge / standing rock...
Tue 03/06/2003 14:52:56
well, I guess a decent rock is now in place - although I'll have too make it a little less phallic! - and the surronding landscape is better.
Now, some criticism, please, before I pat myself too much on the back...
I must say I'm quite pleased with it, so I need people pointing all its flaws, to get me down to earth.
For one, I think the perspective is almost useless for a 3rd person perspective game.

PS RickJ, can this do for Pedra da Gavea?

Critics' Lounge / desolate landscapes...
Sun 01/06/2003 09:38:55
I have been trying my hand at creating some landscapes, but so far I am happy with none...
I've been doing so many, I'm confused now which ones are better, which ones stink, so I am posting here some of them to get your opinion:

This one I did in Max with some input from Vulcania and other terrain plugins:

I didn't liked this at first, so I don't have the original model or texture anymore - although, right now, I think this one has more promise than some others. Also in Max with Vulcania, DeepValley and the like...

I did this one on my own, ie without plugins help, so it's a bit more original - it's incomplete as the others are, but the sky is simply wrong...

OK, this one is not a landscape, but it's a pic I feel it's coming on right, although there is still a lot of work to do - I put it here just to know if the pictures above would fit with the style of this pic.

14H15M GMT time - A corrected version of the game is now ready for download at the same URL. (The executable file is now TUMv11.exe, etc - the zip file is NOW TUMv11.zip)

Also, for those that are already playing the buged version (TUMv1.exe), it seems that a savegame will work - I still didn't have time to play it until the bug... It may be ready for download at 19H00 GMT... I'll post it when ready.

If you're playing the bugged version, also:
1. DO NOT use map when inside warehouse
2.  There are 4 objects in the inventory that when right clicked when in "zoomed view" create a deadend - so, save before trying to look at inventory objects when in zoom view

After one year in the making, The Uncertainty Machine is out...

The game is supposed to borrow elements from Broken Sword-type games and science-fiction novels...

Set in the near future, in the western world, the game features a young female reporter. She'll start the day investigating a minor bulglary - her curiosity will soon instigate her to know more, and know more she eventually will.

Go get the game at the games page (full length), or thru my page www.freewebs.com/ratracer ...

The released game is supposed to be version 1 (meaning that - maybe ! - there will be another version, but only with an updated music score).

I have written a WT for the desperate ones - post or email me if you need it!
