Chis will never reach the legendary status that Little Willy has.
If you're gonna make a fake character, at least be original.

SQ 1-5 collection + SQ6.
A bunch of stuff, including PQ2, Heart of China
Laura Bow 2 + Some other game in an odd package
QFG Anthology
LSL1 EGA
Hero's Quest (Smashy box, but still... R@RE!)
This is a bizarre and possibly illegal package. LSL1 VGA, Spellcasting 101, and Elvira, all in one box. Hmm...
Robin Hood: Conquests of the Long, Bowed... er...
A bunch of crap + Sanitarium
Laura Bow 2 again
PQ Collection
Gold Rush

PS: QFG2 is on route to a mailbox near my front door. Woot. Also, a friend of my brother found all of the original disks and manual for the EGA version of QFG1 buried in his closet. He was generous enough to let me have them.

Here's my development schedule:

1 - Write the story, outline, puzzles
2 - Make a list of all resources needed. Every background, sprite, sound etc...
3 - Do all of the graphics
4 - Scripting/Sounds

I find it much easier to do all of the artwork ahead of time, that way you can really focus on the scripting. RQ2 was made that way.

I came up with this system after the failure of RK2. I was doing a room at a time, drawing things as I needed them, and everything suffered as a result.

I have a vague memory of getting some at some point. It's been a while so I can't be sure.

Well, I went back to the store on my way home tonight.
They had a copy.
A copy.
Now, I may just be, you know, assuming things here, but I find that very odd.
Anyways, I have it and they suck and that's that.
Yay me.

Alright.
I found a guy who's heard of the game.
He said the store got a copy. A copy.
They only got one because they didn't think anyone would buy it. Why would you even bother? Come on.
Anyways, apparently someone took it out of his hands before he even put it on the shelf, and all kinds of people have been asking about it, much to his surprise.
They will be getting more copies soon. Yay!

Cafe Press is garbage.

QuoteThey also fail to mention (until you read the new agreement fully), are several ways in which they will NOT give you your earned commissions. If more then 180 days go by in which you do not total up to the minimum $25 for a check, you lose it. (They charge you a $25 "administrative fee"). You will effectively end up owing them money

That's what they tried to pull on me, to which I replied "LOL" and promptly closed up shop. On top of all the hidden BS they try to pull on you, the merchandise quality is so low that you will literally cry. The t-shirts are equivalent to those old iron-on decal t-shirts from the 70's.

I still wear my Larry Vales shirt though.

Let's put it this way, Rode Quest was supposed to be one of those "quickie, make it in a week" games, and then it ended up taking like a month to finish.
Now, two things to point out here:

1 - I am not a brilliant scripter by any means
2 - That was a long time ago, and I don't know what changes have been made to the parser system since then

There's just so much you have to think about when doing it, that it becomes a big mess really fast. Didn't help much that I was learning it as I went, like usual.  :-\

That new system sounds interesting though. I haven't given up hope on the parser. I think there's still room for it in some capacity. I have big plans. Oh yes. Muhahahaha...

He can have some of my man-hairs. I have plenty to spare.

For the record, I didn't notice the campiness of it until it was pointed out.

Wow. Thanks for the post Russell.
I'll probably take a deeper look if I get the time.
Good to see the lack of rediculous fanboyism in the thread so far.

Wokka wokka

Anyone mucked around with it? Still seems complex as hell to me.

You laugh, but here's a situation my brother ran into at work recently:

Dolt: "Hey Jason, can you help me find a birthday card for so-and-so on the internet?"
Jason: "Fine."
Googling ensues. Animated e-cards are found.
Dolt: "Can you print that?"
Jason: "Are you sure?"
Dolt: "Yeah, that's perfect."
Printing of one frame of animated card ensues.
Dolt: "Can't you print the whole thing?"
Jason: "What do you mean?"
Dolt: "The whole thing."
Jason: "You mean the animation?"
Dolt: "Yeah."
Jason: "But... it's an animation..."
Dolt: "Can you print it?"
Eyes of Jason bugging out of head in baffledom ensues.

DW:Noir was also never released here.

Some days I think I should just move to Europe for the adventure games.

QuoteMeasured in working hours, I doubt even a fairly succesful game as Fatman will yield a profit.

I think it's more about a dream, or goal some of us have had. It's strange, because honestly, you can just make a game and give it away, and that should be the same thing, but at the same time, the whole commercial thing makes it seem more 'real', if that makes any sense.

QuoteAnyway, a commercial game must be awfully professional, without bugs or glitches or anything like that.
If you showed us some smaller projects you've done, we could tell you your chances of making a selling game

Exactly. Not only do you have to make the game, which will more likely than not have to be significantly longer than most of the freeware stuff, but you're responsible for distribution, and customer support. You have an obligation to answer your customers questions, fix bugs etc...
People seem to think that it's just like making any other game, only you get money. Well, yeah right.
Also, there's the fact that you now have to deal with reviews in a more serious manner, which can be rough, especially when you've made 90% of the game yourself.

Runaway was suppsed to be out in America this week, but no one I spoke to knew anything about it.
Damn you lazy retailers. Damn you.
#417
Rebel -> Speak for yourself. Anyone that has the energy to put together a commercial project deserves every bit of respect than anyone else does. Ask Ionias what's involved beyond what's usually needed for a freeware game. Most people can't even do that, from what I've seen.
#418
Did you at least ask him to punch you or something?

I was at Chicago Ohairy airport once with school, and we saw some WWF wrestler, so one of the guys with us asked him to pick him up by the neck.
He refused for some reason.
What a jerknob.

People always say stuff like 'Mac is good for artwork'. Explain.
I can see the advantages for video editing, with the firewire and all, but other than that, I see absolutely no reason to own a mac.
And yes, I use one. I work on one. In fact, I spend more time on the Mac than on the Win box.
They crash just as much as Windows (OSX is supposedly better, but, uh, it'd be nice if I wasn't forced to upgrade all of my software just to run it).
The cost alone of a Mac makes it completely worthless in my opinion.
So someone please explain to me where all of that money makes it a good investment.
'Good for artwork'. Please. OS9 doesn't even have any memory management whatsoever. You have to manually tell each program how much memory to use. Once that's used up, good luck running anything else.
Imacs are good for the internet, grandma, and people who want something pretty to show off to friends. Oh, and of course all those 'designers' who barely know how to turn the damn thing on.
Actually, scratch the internet. Half of the webpages I visit don't open properly in IE for mac.
As for Linux. Had it on for a week. Realised I would never use it since it was way more complicated than it needed to be.
Hopefully that'll change.

Just to clarify, I have no problem whatsoever with commercial projects, nor do I have a problem with someone putting together a compilation, as long as the author gives permission to do so.

Maybe CJ should think about selling some advertising space or something on the site (related stuff only, of course, and NO POPUPS! :) ) I could use the traffic.
Well, not really, but it's a good excuse to support AGS, now that we don't have the luxury of the EZBoard donate thingy which CJ couldn't refuse.
