I'd happily buy tracks for itunes prices if I could get them in decent unrestricted formats, scene standard mp3 and flac (funny I have to dream of a download service that's up to the quality of the pirates). I've bought mp3s from bleep.com before, and that doesn't even have a lossless option for most things. I'm probably unusual in that I have no love of packaging (game boxes, cd cases, etc...) unless it's unusually excellent packaging, so I'd buy the majority of my data online if it was reasonable. I expect there are increasingly more people like me though, that are pretty much entirely digital, portable and internet connected in their media choices, know how to rip a CD or crack the drm off an itunes file, and will pay so they don't have to.

Of course there's allofmp3 but I'd rather risk being sued than pay someone to pirate for me.

Bluetooth USB dongles are very cheap, but I doubt anyone would use this for real, in a 2d adventure game.

I saw some interest in using the SIXAXIS controller in AGS games, in the "AGS to move to PS3" thread. I decided that those of us stuck with the old version on Windows might like to try stuff like motion sensing controls without having to update to the PS3 platform, so here is this rough plugin which allows you to use the Wii remote in your AGS games. Currently motion sensing, IR sensing, buttons and rumble are supported.

Requirements: Nintendo Wii remote(s) connected to your PC (easily done via most bluetooth adapters), a relatively modern version of AGS.

How will we get hold of devkits, and how much will they cost? It's an interesting move, I must say, I didn't think Sony would actually listen, but they seem to genuinely want interesting indie stuff for their download service.

By the way, is any of the 3d hardware going to be made use of in the PS3 port?

Edit: Why PS3 by the way? AGS on microsoft's XNA would be nice too... hope you're getting paid!

Oh, I see, uh... well done, that's the longest internet grudge I've witnessed. Yes, sorry, this is going to have to be locked too, it's too silly. See you again in 3 years.

When was this? I've heard of the user Blackthorne, although I don't really know him, but as a long time forum user/mod that's all that makes sense to me in this. Sorry if you disagreed with a modding decision somewhere... it's not possible to make everyone happy, we mostly sort out trolls without causing too much trouble though, I think. The few trolls we get.

Good luck with your adventure game.

Just read up on winsock, and design a simple API that AGS scripters could handle, maybe something along the lines of

struct Socket {
    // General Stuff
    String read(int numBytes, int timeoutMilliseconds=0); // returns a null string if it times out or if the socket isn't connected
    String write(String bytes);
    bool isServer();
    String getRemoteURL();
    int getRemotePort();
    String getLocalURL();
    int getLocalPort();
    bool isLocal();

    // Client stuff
    bool connect(String url, int port);
    void disconnect();
    bool isConnected();

    // Server stuff
    bool listen(int port);
    Socket* getNextIncomingConnection(); // returns a socket that's newly connected, if there is one in the queue
};

The main potential problem I can see with this kind of system is that AGS Strings probably don't like having NULL bytes int them (the plugin API takes NULL terminated strings, anyway), and many protocols contain them. I don't think it's a problem for AGS to AGS communication, but if you wanted to do some http binary downloading or whatever, then a workaround would be necessary.

Edit: Some helper functions would be nice for sending AGS values, also. Stuff like int readInt(), void writeInt(int) and so on...

Yeah it's pretty popular among AGSers, worth a play if you haven't tried it. If you like it check out the guy's previous game Within a Deep Forest, even though it's different in most ways.

Flash doesn't support this, and it's used very rarely in 2d animation (almost never), mainly because it wouldn't suit most animations. 2D animation is usually a sequence of drawings of 3D objects like people or buildings etc, and those things don't move as segments on a 2d plane. However there are programs that can do bone animation in 2D, such as Moho, and you can make some decent enough things if you work with the restrictions, and are happy with the overall effect it gives (kind of like paper puppets). It exports to swf.

Generally speaking no, they have a way to come before you can play commercial games on them. I did try Phoenix Wright 2 (jap/eng version) in the latest iDeaS, and it works, but with impaired graphics, and at about 40% speed (on my athlon xp2600+), also no sound.
So I wouldn't highly recommend that. The text is slow enough in the 100% speed game.

You know I'll be there, but I'm mentioning it in for people counting. I'll come at the start and stay until it seems a good time to go home.

There have been the the AGS operas, the AGS podcasts done on skype (interviews mostly), AGS radio went for a time too but of course nobody listened.
Your idea sounds more like an audio chatroom, which, if you've ever tried one with more than a handful of people, is really too chaotic. Some AGS IRCers skype now and then in small groups... that works ok.

I've had a lot of problems with most non wacom tablets I've had or used (including trust, genius, and aiptek ones), the pen weight and battery replacing is a bit annoying if you use it much, but also the surface feel is often bad, and there are usually poor drivers that simply won't work sometimes, or lose pressure sensitivity. The spring loaded pens are more prone to going bad, too, and it's often hard to find replacements. Just my experiences...

As for sizes, A5 is a good size, I recently bought an Intuos 3 A5, and it's the perfect tablet for me, but it is expensive for a gift. A6 is very usable, but the movements you make are of course smaller, and for an older person I'd imagine it's harder to be steady. I don't find A4 better than A5, and I'd rather save the desk space and arm motion, but that will vary depending on the person.

You are still a student, right? If you do go for a wacom, you might find the best wacom deals at places like mycomputerbits.com that do student discounts, I saved about £50 on my tablet, but the discount is less on the lower end ones.

However, even as a wacom user, I think since it is a gift and he isn't currently a tablet user, you can take a chance with that Trust one, it'll probably make a decent first drawing tablet.

That's quite normal, not many programs will do a better job, gif compression is quite well understood.
Jpg is suited to compressing images with lots of colours and variation, gif is suited to compressing flat, clean colours. 2mb gifs are to be expected if you're compressing a large, noisy image.

AGA is being secretive because Double Fine's current project is ARE 2.

There's a well, yeah, good luck getting to it though, it's all barred up.

whoops, I used arrows instead of circling it.

Half an hour into Wales, just off the M4, also has a railway station and busses from Cardiff aren't too hard.

I know most people are, but I'm sure not everyone else will be, but those dates are as good as any other, so lets go with them. That way we're not having to make the decision of who to prevent from coming after they tell us.

26th June - 2nd July! I'll book my plane now. With that very small airline that flies over these couple of valleys.

Deluxe Paint was more Amiga era (you can run it in an emulator if you wish), pro motion for Windows is designed to be similar, although it's generally more advanced, as you'd expect.

You can also find good art painted upside down on the ceiling of cathedrals, or pixelled into a C64 with a joystick, I'm just saying there are nicer and faster ways to work.

Something more geared towards palette based image editing will make you think more about intelligent limited colour usage than paint will, I expect, Pro Motion or DPaint or whatever. Anyway I didn't mean to start another editor discussion.
