Set the scale for the walkable area that he's standing on to something under 100%

That'd work, and it's more or less the workaround I've had to tell people to use. That or .appending a lot of strings to each other.
#563
I've had a few people bring up this limitation on IRC before, including GarageGothic.Ã,  Sylpher was constantly hitting up against string literal and compiler limits when writing his text based AGS game, it seemed.

Within the line limit an alternate string form could be work, perhaps, something like

"""This is a way of writing long text strings
that many languages have, with varying
syntax. It can have line breaks and different
types of "quotes" in it, and it keeps
this formatting without having to escape
anything.
"""

Am I right in assuming that string literals are still compiled as old style strings? I guess that's another problem... and maybe a tricky one to work around for backward compatability reasons.

If you can make a genuinely captivating story, and present it graphically so that it is having something added to it that your plain text wouldn't have had, then this is of course fine. But it's more like an animation or a comic than an adventure game.Ã,  If you don't use that word then I don't see anything wrong with the idea.Ã,  The terms "text adventures" orÃ,  "interactive fiction" don't presume that there is any gameplay. At the most, just that there is some level of interactivity. So I think you should use a similar term, if you want to label your work at all.

General Discussion / Re: C&A moderation
Sat 03/06/2006 17:20:23
Every other forum is well under control, and not too many mods have left... c_leks went missing, true... and we're all very worried! But DS was never away.  Several global moderators are around on the forums for a few hours a day each, and Gilbert and Fuzzpilz are around a lot too.  The problem is just that the competitions forum is a very different thing, with so many competitions that need to be locked on a regular basis, most of which will be uninteresting to any one of us, nobody is reading them to lock them once voting is finished.  If anyone wants that job, PM CJ, sure.

"There are several people with global moderator status that, for one reason or another, have not been taking an active role in the forum's upkeep" - who? I almost never post an "I moderated this!" notice on threads, I just move, merge, delete etc.  So it might not be obvious when mods do things.  But in the general forums abusive threads are locked pretty quickly, by whichever moderator sees them, and the tech forums are kept tidy by the tech forum mods, you do a fine job in critics, and darth's moderation of the GiP forum is legendary!

General Discussion / Re: Dreamfall & Paradise.

Dreamfall was nice at the start, but I gave up at the second area too... nothing to do with it being 3d because it's very pretty and controls fine, but everything to do with it being a boring game. Only occasionally does it feel like a "game" actually, it's mostly a story that didn't hold my attention.

copying gta2 cars is good advice, I guess.

Well if we're comparing ourselves to the movie or music industries, independant usually means commercial but funded by smallish publishers/music labels that don't control their artistic direction.  Those are things we don't have many of... and as Vince pointed out, the only ones that exist are mainly about publishing downloadable games for people that don't really like computer games, just want to kill time. The only exception I can think of is Manifesto Games, who haven't yet picked up any games as far as I can tell.

There are lots of us out there making games, and if we had somewhere to pitch them to with a realistic chance of success then I think quite a lot of people would raise their game for that. Unfortunately, I don't see that appearing, but with people becoming more and more willing to pay for things through the internet I think direct sales are becoming a very attractive business model, for low budget producers and big budget alike.  That's going to level the playing field a bit.

Who knows, in a few years perhaps people will be getting their console games through the internet too.

There's a public beta of Inform 7 at the moment, which has a natural language system for writing games, and a GUI, but I'd recommend learning the language so far, this only seems suitable for the extremely coding phobic.

Unless you specifically have permission, or there is no copyright holder, then you can't use anyone else's content legally. This applies to pirated songs as well as less commonly opposed things anime fansubs or abandonware.

There are some uses that are considered "Fair Use" and are allowed, such as using a clip from a copyrighted work to demonstrate something, or parody, but background music doesn't fall under that.

Those things are basically all you need to know about copyright for game making.Ã,  Of course, there are lots of things that are against the law that you probably do anyway, and never get caught - that's up to you.

Paste it into a new browser window, freewebs doesn't like referrers.
#576
Pretty much, yes.  You can get templates and modules to do the more common ones, no need to do it yourself.

Personally I'd rather rent or buy a tent there, and I can keep the rest down in size... I think we can manage.
#578
Game Maker does this as well, and I think it can be useful for minor edits.  I just use the clipboard copying/pasting functions if I need to do that right now, but if this is very simple to add it'd be worth it.
#579
More competitions? I really don't think we should have any more, there are so many.

Wow, I can only name one. I suck.
Spoiler
And that's Wally, the cartographer.
