The only other thing I can think of is you haven't set the port right, note that AGS Uploads runs on port 2121, and not the default ftp port 21, which is what the owners use to upload to the server in general.

Interesting, are you trying to log in as Peder Johnsen or Reven? It should be your forum login details rather than current forum name, if that isn't clear.
#663
It's working perfectly well for everyone else, does your FTP client give an error message?

As Kinoko pointed out, it's hard for her to look Japanese with so few Japanese traits, the bright green eyes, red brown hair and pointed nose make her seem to me more like a member of staff aboard an American cruise ship, rather than a Japanese schoolgirl, so if you do want people to realise she's Asian without spelling it out I'd edit it further, something like

If it's your first try, it's excellent, by the way.

Might as well close the competition now.

I expect it'd be like Gilbertfest was for some of us without cars, come early, leave late, stand freezing in bus stop 7 hours until the busses/trains start running.  It's easier than finding somewhere to stay, anyway.

Could be fun... I don't care what days it is, I'd get the megabus probably because I'm poor, that is cheaper in a week, and even cheaper in two weeks.

Hotspot has taken the http upload facility down for maintainance, it should be back up and working some time soon.Ã,  Larger uploads over http are often troublesome though, so I've written a script to handle uploads via FTP, here are the details for you to put in your FTP client:

Server:Ã,  Ã, americangirlscouts.org
Port:Ã,  Ã,  Ã, 2121
username: Your forum username
password: Your forum password

This will allow you to upload, list and delete your own files, and they'll be available at http://americangirlscouts.org/agsuploads/YourUsername
Your forum password is not stored in any way.

Limits:
You can upload mp3, ogg, mid, png, gif, jpg, exe, rar and zip files, up to 100mb.Ã,  You should NOT use this as a general uploading service, it is mainly intended as a place where we can maintain stable links to games, but screenshots, stuff for critics lounge, and so on, are also ok. If you have problems with it PM me or post here with them, it's not been heavily tested yet (although it appears to work).

Because nobody remembers to update it, I believe the responsibility was recently handed over to SSH, perhaps he'll be able to.

He just updated: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php

There were 15 people there and I had to sleep on the wooden floor :P There were of course lots of people we wanted to ask to come, but it really wasn't feasible by then... if as many people go to Brittens as last year we'll need to have tents in the back garden, should be ok, in summer.

I think it's silly to bring any newbie vs oldbie slant into this, it's completely nonsensical... most of the people disagreeing with you are relatively new members, I would have no idea if you joined earlier than them or not, it's a non issue.  I'm glad you're not too bothered by the review now anyway, can we let the argument rest everyone?

Hello everyone, I have lots of photos and other nice things for you... you see over the new year a bunch of us stayed at AGA's house, we called this Wintermeet!

Perhaps I should explain how it all happened first, for those that haven't heard, I believe it went something like this.

Hajo sadly had to miss Mittens, and to partially make up for it he decided to come to Wales, he asked AGA if he could stay with him, and me if I'd come and hang out with them and play CS and such, and of course we said yes.Ã,  When our CS playing friends (Esseb, Helm, DarkStalkey and Custard) found out about this they wanted to come too, we were now expecting a weekend of mainly sitting indoors shooting each other.
We did mention it to other people though, and before we knew it twice as many people wanted to come. AGA's house is big, but it isn't big enough to fit many more people than that in it (you'll see at Brittens). So unfortunately to prevent more people asking to come, and having to turn them away... it was decided we wouldn't post publically about it until after it happened.. it's been over a month now though, so I asked the others if they were ok with me posting their photos and here we are.

Welcome to Wintermeet!

The attendees were AGA, Andail, Becky, Chrille, CJ, custard, Adam, Dominika, Esseb, Fuzzpilz, Goldmund, Grundislav, Hajo, Helm, scotch

Dominika, Goldmund, Helm, AGA.

AGA, Fuzzpilz, Custard, Hajo, Adam, Becky.

We went on an expedition up the mountain!

At the top the weather started to get colder and it began to snow.Ã,  For a time we thought we'd lost Chrille.

We found this fellow next to his downed space-pod, and adopted him, he is called Spooblehat.

The more exciting people decided they weren't going to stay home and make games on new years eve, so they went to a club.

Smoking made Goldmund cool.

As you would expect, CJ is good at Dance Dance Revolution.

We started a game, which will probably never get finished ;) We played Wetrix and CS and Lego Star Wars, we watched stuff from Esseb's Asian movie collection, and Myth Busters, we saw the beta of BJ5, and more stuff from Donna (I need to play that game), we drank glue wine and Tesco bitter, you know, we did so many things, I can't post all the photos, so take a look at them for yourselves, I'll add some more if I get them.

Here are some moving pictures! Not many, Grund's camera ran out of batteries.
Grund filmed this excellent avant garde piece: http://www.grundislavgames.com/wintermeet/meltthelimit.wmv
and starred alongside CJ in this excellent sit com: http://www.grundislavgames.com/wintermeet/misunderstandings.wmv

As usual for AGS meetings now, we played 1000 Blank White Cards, thanks to Esseb for scanning them! http://americangirlscouts.org/wintermeet/1kbwc/

It was a really great few days, and it was cool to meet the people I'd not met before, like Fuzz and Esseb and Becky.
Wintermeet people, fill them in on the stuff I forgot!

PSP 4 is ancient... I was using 5 when I still used a 486, but I think it was "good enough" to make backgrounds, sure. Ã, I would encourage people to look at finding the best tools for the stuff they do though... unless you're a really slow learner it saves so much time over making do with what you have. Ã, So give a newer version of PSP (or Photoshop if you can get it) a try for a few days, I expect you won't regret it.

Ability to draw backgrounds in these programs depends entirely on your knowledge of how do draw and shade and compose nice images, and how well you can use your tools... unfortunately these require study and practice.

If AGS had a few more flexible data structures it'd make scripting so much more easy.  There's really no reason to have plain old static arrays in a scripting language, we don't care that much about speed here, compared to ease of use. Just about every scripting language I've seen has both associative arrays and dynamic arrays as fundemental data types (often with easy ways to write them in code, most common syntax seems to be [value, value, value] for a dynamic array, and {key: value, key: value} for a hash map.  I'm not sure how hard it'd be to add these things to AGS script but it's certainly one way I'd like to see it heading.

The Rumpus Room / Re: AGS Questionaire!
Sun 26/02/2006 22:00:28
Name: David Scott

Age: 20

Female/male: Male

1. How long have you been involved in the AGS community?
- Since September 2002

2. Why did you get involved in AGS?
- I wanted to make games, I had tried AC (the ancient DOS predecessor to AGS) but found it lacking... AGS seemed great, though.

3. How do you feel that the fact that AGS is a freeware programme affect the community that has built up around it?
- The community may never have got off its feet if AGS was commercial, it might have worked if it was something like Game Maker, pay to remove the splash screen, but otherwise I don't think many of the people who are here would have given it a go.

4. How big a part does the AGS community play in your life?
- A tragically large part, it pretty much is my life. I consider some AGSers real life friends (and make every effort to meet up with them once or twice a year), and AGS consumes a lot of my time, working with other people on games.

5. Have you been involved in making any games using AGS? You may list them if you want
- I've worked on 'Alien Rape Escape', 'Jon Stickman', various other things, and at the moment 'The Chronicles of Oswyn Rodgerick Throckmorton'.

6. Answer these questions if you have been involved in making AGS games:

a. Were you interested in game design/programming before you started using AGS?
- Certainly, ever since I got my first computer (c64) I've made games, maybe almost as much as I've played them. Ã, I learned art to make games, and I learned to code to make games.

b. If no, do you feel that you would have got into game design without AGS?
-

c. Do you make games using other programmes, either freeware or not? How does the eperience differ?
- I've used other game engines, such as Game Maker and Klik n Play, beginner languages like variations of BASIC, more serious languages like C++, and very high level languages like Python. Ã, They are all quite different to one another from a putting the game together point of view, but I tend to spend most time doing art work, which is a similar process whatever platform.
Although it's probably the thing I've spent most time working on projects with, AGS is actually pretty restrictive compared to everything else. Ã, The script language is gaining features that allow more complicated games to be coded more easily, and more useful parts of the engine are being opened up to the script for customisation, and so on, but it's still basically only suitable for certain types of adventure games in my opinion, just about every other engine beats it in this regard. Ã, That's not necessarily a bad thing; in other engines such as Game Maker you have a lot of freedom, but the price for that is the engine doing very little for you (Sludge seems to go more in this direction than AGS too), which means only an experienced programmer type person can make a game.
AGS's community isn't much founded on these programmer types. Ã, It also affects the types of games that get made, with all the set up for the game written for you, AGS doesn't disuade people from making small games that might seem a waste of time in other engines, where you have to write a load of code to set up the basics whatever size game you do.
I use AGS for all adventure game type things I want to make, and Python/C++ combined for everything else, currently. Seems like a waste of time trying to make non adventures in AGS, people try though... people that don't know anything that suits their purposes more, I guess.

d. Has AGS inspired you to try and take up game design professionally?

I've wanted to do that off and on since long before I used AGS... not really sure if it's a realistic thing to hope for, it still seems appealling, though.

7. Do you feel that there is a gender divide in the AGS community?
- A divide in what sense? I don't think the female members here are treated, or act any differently, but obviously there is a discrepancy in the number of males to females. Ã, Compared to game development in general I think I attract a lot of girls. I mean we. Ã, The females here do seem to have a slightly better success rate with making games, I'm not sure if that's true, just seems that way.

8. Are you likely to feel differently about a game if you discover it’s made by a female? In what way?
- Only if I really really thought about it, I might see how it affected how she wrote different characters... maybe... not really.

9. Do you feel that AGS makes it easier for females to get involved in computer game design? In what way?
- There do seem to be quite few women interested in programming (compare the number of females helping with code in the Tech Forums to the number of females posting in the critics lounge), so I guess not having to helps a little.

10. Do you feel that there is a difference between the types of games created by males and females?
- With AGS games, I haven't noticed that so far... with non AGS, well, there are few female games designers around.

11. Any other comments?
- No

That's how bright it is in the original game, you don't really need to interact with anything in the darker areas.

As for comments on the project... well GF is my favorite adventure game, but I don't think remakes are ever worth the time spent on them.Ã,  If you want to do something GF related perhaps you could make an original story set in the land of the dead.Ã,  It's all up to you though, good luck with whatever you decide, this is a huge undertaking.

You know there are at least three AGS meetings happening in Europe this year, Thomas? :P
#679
Yes they are extremely slow filters, they were designed for emulator games for older consoles and handhelds... so that's even lower than 320x200.  They aren't suitable for use on higher res graphics generally.
#680
I don't think this is a significant problem, not many people are going to turn it on if it isn't on by default, and if they do... well, they can decide what looks better to them.  On the subject of graphical perfection, I think being able to adjust the brightness/contrast of the display somehow would be good, would allow for the developer to make one of those little calibration bars at the start maybe.  Because it seems however I draw backgrounds they look washed out or too dark on most other monitors, or even on the same monitor but in a different display mode...
