I enjoyed the demo (though it is way too short and just a glimpse into the story) and longplayed it

This was actually a great BG blitz subject. I’m sorry I didn’t see this before the deadline.
Admin: As there’s only one submission, could it be extended a month?
but august is over now too ...

what can I say, finally I fought my way through all the slimy insects and also completed this cool game. But only after playing content, that really got me into it. I want more UKZ!

And of course I recorded it:

fun. Allowing to drag tiles even when it doesn't delete anything makes it too easy though. is it always the same start condition or is this coincidence?

this totally needs some cool sfx and displays for multipliers when combining more and more tiles!

bug: when you have 20-29 points the points display as 2_0 to 2_9

I had fun and recorded a longplay

as I wrote there, some more animation frames for the actions would have made it even better :)

I'm reviving the thread to say I like the game and recorded a longplay just in case... ;-D

@eri0o: I mean, in case there is a acsetup.cfg or user.cfg the game should use these settings, if these files are not found it should use the few values stored in the game binaries as default value. BUt with "non-winsetup config GUI" you mean "custom" "winsetup" programs that write a user.cfg file or start the game with some parameters???

the thing is, if I'd install all AGS games I play, I wouldn't mind these extra locations for files, but then I'd expect the game to delete these files in extra locations when uninstalling the game (or ask me if I want to delete them or keep them).
But actually I like how easy it is to just unzip the gamefiles and then just play, no need for an installer, so this also includes no need for another directory for save files in my book.

can the game on the engine level try to save when starting the game and refuse to play with an error like "Please locate the gamefiles in a folder with write access or you cannot save your game or configuration" in case it does not work? Would this be possible? Every player will understand that and not unzip AGS games into protected system folders anymore...
QuoteIn 3.3.5, I think, user config location was also moved to "saved games folder", by request, because in some circumstances it was not possible to write user config in game folder.
What are these circumstances?  Are they still relevant?

But to give crimson something he can work with
1. How to define the above "mode"? Supposedly this may be a setting in "default config" that comes with a game.
And what actually should be default setting for this mode (game dir or os-specific location)?

I like GameDir as default for games I download, unzip and just play (and then delete sooner or later or keep it all together). For installing games that delete the savefiles with uninstall I don't care where they are.

2. Is there a nice way to tell that user config is where saves are, thus merging two settings? OTOH someone may like to have user config in the game dir and saves somewhere else - is that also a valid case?

Either have it in plain sight in the game folder.
Or maybe display the path in the winsetup like: "Game settings and Save-file path" with options like "open path" "change path" "use game folder" "delete saves and config"

3. Speaking of user config inside the game dir. Suppose the game files could be overwritten, e.g. by installing updates, either by hand or by other system like Steam.
In such case even the config file could be overwritten. And if user config is written to same file as default config, it will likely be lost.

I like the idea with 2 files, in that case the default.cfg might be overwritten but not the user.cfg, problem solved. if the gameauthor delivers a default.cfg and their own user.cfg via steam update, well, this is just crappy on the author's end and not AGS's problem anymore.

QuoteOne of the vague ideas I had in the past is to detect user.cfg in the game dir, and if it's present then use that, and if it's not then use writable OS-specific location. The problem with this is that the abscence of user.cfg in game dir could mean simply that no user.cfg was yet written, and therefore not really determinative.
Is this the check if the gamepath is writeable and the game can add files like user.cfg or is this the check to see where the user wants to have these config files?
for the check where the config files should be, what would the game do when both in the game directory and in the OS specific location no user.cfg, or default.cfg is present?

I like the idea of having a user.cfg.
Even better, would it be possible to save the default configuration of the game the game author sets into the game file itself? then there is one file less to confuse the player and it is clear when user.cfg gets deleted all settings get reset. and on top of that there is no chance a stupid user deletes the default.cfg.

about the default path, maybe start a poll?
I'd prefer settings and saves in the directory the game is in. Or maybe have a subfolder for gamesaves as these can pile up, but a subfolder in the gamedir and not somewhere completely different.
Quotesome people simply don't like it that the games write files elsewhere and pollute obscure locations on their disk (that's to paraphrase what users told me). There is also no automated cleanup as most "homemade" games don't have proper installers, so these files may stack up there for years (same goes to saves tbh).
This exactly (quote from github)

acsetup.cfg seems like a relic from the past, adventure creator setup. so renaming that to user.cfg is just cool in 2021 and the only downside I see is having to rename it in the manual and the wiki too. for compatibility the game itself can still accept acsetup.cgf but not generate it.
A user.cfg should be preferred by the game though, if available.

What a delightful game, it just oozes atmosphere. It is really hard to decide for a favourite of the stories, but it is probably The nameless ritual
Spoiler
While wading through the water in the library down there it did send shivers down my spine, really well done. And then the soldiers, I wanted to use the pillow to help the second soldier to rest his head and broken jaw on it, then he just kills him, that shocked me a lot, wtf, noooooo... but it was probably better for him.

also here is a spoilerfilled longplay
