I like both the idea of a technobabylon 2 and also making it in 3D. Using unity for that is probably the best choice atm if you don't want to write your won 3D game engine from scratch. I know blender has a game engine too and blender is open source, though unity is probably way more advanced than the blender game engine... yet. And all this happens when I think about making backgrounds for an AGS game completely in blender (or use real life photos or both mixed...) but I don't have a story yet or use the blender game engine for good... ;)

Does anybody even listen to these interviews. Dave talks about how he hates his life and wants to burn everything down in a huge fire and dance around it naked and high on Epinephrine and laugh like a maniac while in a background process he downloads unity for technobabylon 2! ;-D

damn you and your The Witness Podcast! I bought it in the christmas sale and after hearing talk about it more and more now I started it and I#m just blown away from how much you can do with these small puzzle games :) And I just bruteforced my way through the 4 hedge mazes. I could understand the solution to the first maze after solving it but the others were just every possible combination :) And now I'm stuck in the treehouses with all these sun symbols... :D
and hearing you talk about other adv game characters while playing the whitness is also great, makes me wonder how the protagonist in the witness even looks like, you can't even see your own reflection in the water. There is no witness of the witness so to say. He probably looks something like king graham, his shadow has this same hat (or really weird hair).

can't you just cheat a little and make a walkable area inside the diamondshape and play an animation when changing room (player opens door, walks through it, appears in the next room) and then move the player character by a fixed amount of pixels into the walkable area in the next diamond shape ?!
