Don't you want to "deprogram" yourself of the "normal human instinct" to want to retaliate?

We should strive to understand our behaviour and force ourselves to change it if needed, but in this case I don't see a need to reprogram our behaviour. The methods suggested might be "medieval" and I don't agree with most either but I think throwing some virtual eggs at that son of a bitch is a good therapy. Repressing emotions is unhealthy. It's better to let them out in such a way that nobody gets hurt, like in this topic.

That said it's good that we don't get too carried away and have people who remind us that we should keep the egg throwing in text form. But let's not be patronizing.

Anger towards that guy is completely understandable and justified and so is the need to vent your anger. No need to lecture people and ridicule natural human reactions to a horrific crime.

I somehow feel that you are confusing doing a good/great job to what you do (no matter how big), and starting out big/huge.

someone doesn't have to start alone to a 70 BG game to realise that it's difficult (not impossible though) to not make it.

Regarding time: Sure everyone's got time with free projects, and there is no release date, but have you ever considered that someone might get tired after 7 (for example) years on working on a game? It is a very realistic danger...

I didn't mean that starting big ensures that the game will be good. I meant that no matter how big peoples ambitions seem to be, they should be encouraged to go for it. I know that the advice to start small is well intentioned, but I feel this is discouraging people. You don't know if it's too difficult for them until they try it. Don't tell them where their limits are, let them find out for themselves.

It seems like some of the latest posts in here are trying to answer the question in the title. I'm not really offended but none of these posts made me laugh either.

I can understand your need/will to make a brilliant game, but take care that it takes A LOT of effort, especially if it's a free project. If it's your first game, I could suggest that you start of with something a bit smaller.

I don't agree. Start big, be ambitious and see where your limits are. And most of all don't worry about time. If there is something that can kill a promising game then it's time constraints.

Also: First impress yourself, then impress others.

I think that everyone should wear what they want. If it's not VERY VERY abusive, like walking nude or so.

What is considered offensive varies from culture to culture. In some parts of the world it's absolutely ok to walk around naked while in others you get beat up for showing a square inch of your naked skin. There's no objective rule, it's all a matter of how you have been brought up.

The idea is a standard "solve murder mystery" thing. Nothing too original which of course doesnt mean it's a bad thing.

As for the pictures:
- guy out of proportion
- he doesnt look like he is standing in the woods or in front of the house but rather like a cut-out pasted on a photo(which he kind of is but you get what i mean)
- mood of the pictures doesnt fit the theme. if you want to make a horror game make sure the pictures deliver the appropriate mood(for example by switching from daylight to night).

The charity? Buying plane tickets for these teens so that they can visit a prayer session in Australia.

And there they will pray for people who have no money for food, medicine and clothes.

If a more central role for music is desired, then really it's probably best to write an album, rather than make a game in my opinion.

Or make something like this:

Wow, that was cool Eric.

When that music started playing I thought something is going to jump at me any second.

Maybe if you're casually listening to the radio, or TV-zapping (if you're a casual gamer booting it up, playing for a couple of minutes with no intent to stay any longer, fiddling with the controls as you go along). But if you go to a Pavarotti recital, or a Florez, or a Bumbry, or a whatever, did you really pay all that money, maybe even go to another country for a week so you could attend it, just for the pianist?

Obviously, my example takes for granted that people actually *want* to play the game.

Yeah, what I meant were performances on tv or the radio that I stumble across. Sometimes I come cross something and i think "now that song on the piano is awesome but the singer is just ruining it". Sometimes it's the other way around and I want to listen only to the voice of the singer without anything else. It depends on the performance. Sometimes piano and voice mix well, sometimes they don't.

As far as music in games goes: George Lucas said that sound is 50% of the motion picture experience. I think the same is true for games. Maybe not all of them, but for games that are story based and rely on atmosphere the music is definitely an essential part. Like the others said you might not always conciously hear the music but you feel the mood it is creating. I would go as far as saying that you're not supposed to hear the soundtrack, you're supposed to feel it.

The better the pianist is, the less notice you'll take of him, because he'll empashize the singer, and he'll make it so easy for the singer people will forget he's there.

Actually I sometimes wanted the singer to shut the hell up so I could enjoy the sound of the piano alone.

And the winner is Neil Dnuma! Congratulations!
Thanks to everyone who participated.

My vote goes to Brad Newsom. And if nobody else votes we'll have a tie between Brad Newsom and Neil Dnuma(5 points each).
I guess I forgot to add some rules that tell what to do in a tie situation. Woops. >.>
Being the host I could just choose a winner out of the two but that would make the whole voting procedure pointless.
There's one and a half hour left so keep voting. The next vote could determine the winner.
