Congrats on getting this out there and thanks for letting me test it. It was a real pleasure. Left you a comment on the games page, and looking forward to part two=)

From a fellow Scot living south of the border, welcome!

Have fun discovering AGS=)

Thanks for the reply Xenogia, and that Linux guide is really useful, well done Ogon=)

I really enjoyed it too, though I wasn't expecting that ending. I feel pretty depressed now=(

I didn't mind that there wasn't much gameplay as such, what suggestion there was of a story really drew me in and I could've easily played for longer. The artwork was really good, especially the living room, although it didn't really match with anything else, but that didn't bother me. The fragmentary feel mentioned by AJA works in this game. The music was excellent and really created atmosphere. I haven't tried a lot of the OROW games yet, but creating such a moody, cohesive whole in such a short space of time is, to me, simply amazing. Well done!

I would definitely play a prequel/sequel just for more of the story=)

Is there any difference between Wine on Linux and Wine on Mac? In other words, does the fact you've got it working on Linux suggest the same may work on Mac OS X? I have to admit I know next to nothing about Wine really; I've only compiled a few apps using third party tools like CrossOver and WineBottler.

Last time I installed AGS with CrossOver it wouldn't even load, however I managed to solve quite a few errors and get it to start using WineBottler and WineTricks, but i'm sure it crashed for some reason or another that I couldn't get around at the time. I would try again if it's not utterly hopeless?

Mac support is not a deal-breaker for me since I also use Windows (and I know the Mac port is currently discontinued anyway) but any chance to spend more time with my beloved Mac OS X is welcome ;)

Ooh! This sounds really good, i'm quite excited about it actually!

I would definitely play a French version. I haven't practised my French in ages, but i'm much better at reading French than speaking it, so I could do with the mental work out.

I think the graphics are fine, especially if you're going for a humorous game. I especially like Little Red Riding Hood's crazy eyes=)

P.S. I didn't even attempt to write this post in French because that would just be embarrassing=P

Isn't there a thread where people donate backgrounds etc that they don't mind other people using? My search kung fu is weak right now though so I can't find it. Maybe it was all just a dream.

Personally, I like to create everything myself as much as possible, even if it looks crap. Just scribble out the basic layout of a background in MSPaint or whatever and you'll have something to test with.

EDIT: Doh! Here it is: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=14864.0

Ah! I finished it (with the bug that means it just keeps repeating level 12) only to discover you've just fixed it=S Oh well, will play again later as I really should be doing productive things ;)

I think the bugs I saw have probably been covered - problems with overlap on level 5 as far as I can recall - so nothing else to report that I can think of. Level 9 was tough, and yeah, click and drag would be good.

Neat little game=)

General Discussion / Re: How to hire an artist
Fri 13/08/2010 21:29:25
I didn't find anything wrong with the article myself. Nothing outrageous anyway. I didn't get the predatory tone from it that some people did, it seemed pretty plain speaking to me. You have to spend efficiently on an indie budget and recruiting aspiring artists is a good thing, I feel.

That said, personally I would put more value on the artist and choosing the right art style, than the cost of the artwork itself. I wouldn't want money to affect developing a positive working relationship. If I want to work with you, it usually means I like what I see (and I totally admire you and will bend over backwards to even get my name on the same page as you :P)

The 'keeping them in the dark' comment was the only part that didn't sit right with me, but I understand where he's coming from. Personally, I don't want to make a profit with any of my endeavours (hence why i'm always so poor!), I just want to work with interesting people and enjoy it, but in the real world you have to watch the books if you want to survive. I'm an idealist. I would always want to give everyone an equal share, but it can't always work like that.

I have no immediate plans to hire any artists (i'm still happily churning out crap on my own) but I wouldn't know where to begin putting a value on artwork (some of the stuff on the boards here is mind blowing, never mind on actual artist communities). Allowing artists to pitch for a job sounds fair to me. Isn't that the way it works in 'the real world' anyway?

I can confirm it is indeed on the disc of that issue of PC Gamer (September issue). Can't see any coverage in the magazine itself though, which is disappointing. I've picked up a second copy that i'd be happy to send you if you want to pm me your details.

Looks good and, yeah, the disabled scrollbar being there doesn't bother me, it's much better than jumping to the left.

Thanks for helping out Peder=)

Hey, best of luck, I hope you have a great time. I love anything to do with Japan and Japanese culture so will definitely be stopping by (rss feed *yoink*). Promise me lots of pictures and bizarre anecdotes;-)

Nice travel blog yourself Mr Twelve (hmm, I called you Mr Vince before and now they both sound weird..), I don't think i've seen that before but I do recall reading about your time in Japan somewhere with great interest.

Good stuff, both of you=)

EDIT: Oh and no travel blog from me i'm afraid, i've never been away long enough to keep one=(

I really like it too, especially that crooked drainpipe=) I can't suggest any changes, and I don't think anything needs to be added, too much detail would ruin it imo. The snow does kind of clash with the mediterranean feel of the building, but it's nice snow. I want to eat it.

Any inspiration to do another picture in a similar style? What does the rest of Olgrad look like? What about Fröken Björk's flower shop?;-)

Yay again, i'm glad to see another interview, keep them coming!

Nice interview and congrats again on your MAGS win Mark, well deserved. Really looking forward to The Longevity Gene and it was interesting to hear how it's evolved, I have to go a-Googling your early Zombie Cow forum posts now=)

They're both really good! Domithan's was very creepy, but i've been adopted by two cats so my vote has to go to AG. I haven't seen playing with font sizes like that since my first children's book of poetry years ago, it works brilliantly=)

I hope someone else votes, I don't want to be the one to send it one way or the other=S

EDIT: Phew!

You are evil, evil, evil Mr Vince!

I love the game, it looks and sounds amazing, and there's so many clever ideas in there=)

The platforming bits are hard but I don't mind that - it reminds me of N - and the infinity gun mechanic is cool, I can see how it could make for interesting puzzles.

But why did you have to inflict those infuriating flying sections on me?! why?! You hate me, don't you? Yeah, you do, I could hear you laughing every time I got 'spaced'. Such a cruel puppet master you are, watch me dance.

I got past the second level, I think. I don't know, I died so many, many times .. I got the gun, the enhanced manoeuvrability and a speed boost, but I just kept running out of fuel in the next flying section (yeah, I didn't know that could happen, maybe I should've read the readme file).

Infinity Bit - The masochist's choice.

It was A Game of Two Halves back in March - http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=40254.0
Quote
Something in the game should be drastically changed in the middle of the game.
Examples:
* The genre of the game should change from horror to comedy
* The music for the game should change from rock to classical
* The character of the game should change from a boy to a girl
* The interface of the game should change completely
* etc etc, anything goes!

The only limitation here is, there has to be a clear justification in the plot for the change. If the user will ask himself "Why???" then you have failed...

For bonus points, you can change more than one thing

Yeah, I think it's a great topic, i'm sorry I missed it=(
#399
Aw! I completely missed your last one, being stressed out with my dissertation and all, but it was a really good theme.

Option 1 jumps out at me as the most interesting, I would try to do something with that, but no ideas at the moment.

Of course, I have yet to finish a MAGS entry/my first AGS game, so i'm not exactly the best-equipped to answer! But I always tell myself i'll have time to enter every MAGS that comes around;-)

I'm pretty new myself given that I don't have the time to get into AGS proper right now :'(, but might I also suggest having a look at Densming's fantastic How to Use AGS video tutorial series or the draft version of his AGS book* to get you started. Of course, the tutorial in the manual helps too ;)

*It's not out yet, is it? Or have I completely missed it? I haven't heard anything else about it and I haven't seen it on Lulu yet=S
