General Discussion / Re: Intresting Theory C&C

you do not seem familiar with the current evidence on skin receptors, yet you propose contradictory theories with no evidence...and you expect people who spend their lives researching this to throw their evidence out the window for your unfounded and illogical theory?  I'm sorry...perhaps this is a bit harsh, but modern scientific discoveries do not happen that way...

when you've already got a girl you are romantic with it's a lot easier to be just friends with other girls...

LostTraveler,

You cannot make new advances in science without research or experimentation.

so here is some reading for you:

"The dermis, called "true skin, " is the layer beneath the epidermis. Its major parts are collagen (a protein that adds strength), reticular fibers (thin protein fibers that add support), and elastic fibers (a protein that adds flexibility). The dermis has two layers: the papillary layer, which has loose connective tissue, and the reticular layer, which has dense connective tissue. These layers are so closely associated that they are difficult to differentiate.

The papillary layer lies directly beneath the epidermis and connects to it via papillae (finger-like projections). Some papillae contain capillaries that nourish the epidermis; others contain Meissner's corpuscles, sensory touch receptors. A double row of papillae in finger pads produces the ridged fingerprints on fingertips. Similar patterns in the ridged fingerprints on fingertips are on palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Fingerprints and footprints keep skin from tearing and aid in gripping objects.

The reticular layer of the dermis contains criss-crossing collagen fibers that form a strong elastic network. This network forms a pattern called cleavage (Langer's) lines. Surgical incisions that are made parallel to cleavage lines heal faster and with less scarring than those made perpendicular. Parallel incisions disrupt collagen fibers less and require less scar tissue (cells that aid in healing) to close up a wound.

The reticular layer also contains Pacinian corpuscles, sensory receptors for deep pressure. This layer contains sweat glands, lymph vessels, smooth muscle, and hair follicles, described in the discussion on hair follicles later in this overview."

"Receptors convertthe various kinds of energy they receive from the external and internal environments into electrical impulses. They are of many kinds and are classified in many ways. Steady-state receptors, for example, generate impulses as long as a particular state such as temperature remains constant. Changing-state receptors, on the other hand, respond to variation in the intensity or position of the stimulus. Receptors are also classified as exteroceptive (reporting the external environment), interoceptive (sampling the environment of the body itself), and proprioceptive (sensing the posture and movements of the body). Exteroceptors are used for looking, listening, smelling, tasting, touching, and feeling. Interoceptors report the state of the bladder, the alimentary canal, the blood pressure, and the osmotic pressure of the blood plasma. Proprioceptors report the position and movements of parts of the body and the position of the body in space.

Receptors are also classified according to the kinds of stimulus to which they are sensitive. Chemical receptors, or chemoreceptors, are sensitive to substances taken into the mouth (taste or gustatory receptors), inhaled through the nose (smell or olfactory receptors), or found in the body itself (detectors of glucose or of acidâ€"base balance in the blood). Receptors of the skin are classified as thermoreceptors, mechanoreceptors, and nociceptorsâ€"the last being sensitive to stimulation that is noxious, or likely to damage the tissues of the body.

Thermoreceptors of the skin are of two kinds, warmth and cold. Warmth fibers are excited by rising temperature and inhibited by falling temperature, and cold fibers respond in the opposite manner."

to do the same thing in max, i'd have to set the material ID for each face, then (for each face) I'd have to put on the stack: a mesh select by ID#, then a uvw map (and adjust gizmo)...then id have to mesh select the whole object, then use a unwrap UVW, then edit that and adjust each vertex, then use the texporter plugin to map that (and probably go back and do some horiz/vertic flipping to get orientations facing forward), and then export that map and put each texture onto the correct place, then load up max and assign this texture to the object.  all to do the same thing...and then if i wanted to change part of it, instead of dragging a new texture to that part, I'd have to change the texture file for that segment.  max has a lot of capabilities but stuff like this...it would be nice to do that way...

ah, i see.  there is no free tree lab in max, where i work.

good start on your first model.

your dog has quite a nice house, i might add

i think the main roof could use some overhang

it looks like all of this is considered one object in wings...and...you are allowed to assign different material ID's to different faces with ease, and then drag and drop textures to each material ID?  that's what I am assuming from the image of your model compared to your render (its not nearly so simple in max!).  let me know how it works, im interested.

the light in the sewer was bothering me; light doesn't just make a cone through the air, it illuminates things it is hitting.  so I removed the light cone, and made it lighten the floor, some of the wall, the ladder/powerbox, and some dust in the air.

hard to see without a close up

how much of this did you make on your own?  if you made that tree (on the left side with the leaves)...congratulations, that's not so easy to do.

you should try a shingle texture on the roof instead of deck planks :P

also, I suggest you look into some alternative lighting/rendering methods which will give more realistic outdoor lighting.  I've never used Wings, but is there a way to use some kind of skylight/daylight, combined with light tracer/ radiosity?

Maestro,

1) you could use the critic's lounge uploader if it's a small amount

2) or head on over to www.150m.com and sign up, after a painless sign-up (which you can do as many times as you want) you can get a free 150 MB upload space.  I have been using this for years.

3) you could always use your own computer as a server, allowing certain people to access files in a specific folder

okay...I made this game in all of an hour as a break from the Tanglewood, but it might actually be fun.Ã,  It could very easily be imrpoved with 3d cartoon graphics and and interface...but it's completely playable as is.

there is a blue player and a red player.

blue's controls: arrow keys (movement), enter (fire)

red's controls: WASD (movement), z(fire)

the plot: you both have bazooka's, but are out of ammo.Ã,  there will always be 1 grenade on the screen...pick it up, and a new one will spawn on the screen.Ã,  obviously each one you pick up gives you 1 shot.Ã,  and the objective is to shoot the other player.

:P

so...if you have a friend in the house....give it a shot.Ã,

i think you should supply your artist with a better drawing program, if he can do this with mspaint than he'll be able to do much better and faster in a better program...there are probably some listed at the new freeware post in general discussion.

i made some edits to the picture
- fixed white spot in chalice
- rounded shape of chalice
- added highlights to chalice
- added shadows to chalice
- adjusted angle of back leg
- defined border on back foot
- added shadow to hat
- corrected shadow color of stomach fat
- adjusted cloth that would be coming through the floor where he is laying
- darkened orange inside color of robe
- added orange inside color to the other viewable inside part of robe
- changed expression to be more befitting of a sultan; less anticipating, more critical.
- changed ear

i think the hands could use adjustment, th fingers look funky...but i didnt feel like messing with that

oh, and ....."oops" since i made the edits in paint, i saved in JPG and forgot that I cant set a high quality that way...so a lot of the image quality is lost so you can't actually use this edit but at least you see the changes...

This is not a bug with AGS, it is a programming bug by the game maker...so, sorry but nobody can help you here.

Pixelkitty, looking reallly good.  could add a little bit of a transparent shadow to the troopers i think.  the only other thing is that the empire logo on the ship seems as though it is being viewed from directly downward while the ship is at an angle

but it looks pretty professional :)

yeah i dont know...the voodoo was also my first graphics card, i used it for rainbow six...i was pretty unimpressed.  i was a lot happier when i upgraded to the "evil" nvidia geforce4 which transformed the graphics AND made things run faster...talk about a good thing.  but i know nothing about graphics cards...

the skin shadows look too dark now, i think.

also i noticed that her mouth in the side view is wider than in the front view, but it should be skinnier due to the angle.  this is more apparent with colossal's edit of cutting in the bulbous chin (which is good)
