Critics' Lounge / Re: A 3D scene & character

I couldn't get the second image to work but the chair image is incredible.

I love the kind of stark but detailed look. I agree with Darth and Petteri that this style would look great in a game.

Inspiring stuff.

It was mainly this part that I think was ridiculous:

Both games suck. Only a gangstatard would enjoy them.

It was insulting to me and any other person who enjoys the game. If you don't like the game then fair enough don't play it.

Like I said before it's people who are too immature to be playing the game that will act like asses because of playing it.

I think it could well have been influenced by the Disney picture as there are some similarities, but they could be coincidences. The only person who really knows is the artist I suppose.
Things that look completely different at first glance can be linked by subtle similarities. For example, there was a house that won an award (very specific I know, but I don't remember which house or award at the moment). The architect explained how his inspiration was drawn from two paintings.
Looking at the paintings and photos of the house most people would never see the conection, but it is there.

Maybe I'm taking this a little too far into the art side of things though.

They spawn gangsta wannabes who copy lines directly from both series and spout them off during school. Damn, if I wasn't such a pathetic stick I'd rip out their brains and donate them to science in a last-ditch attempt to cure stupidity.

Bah.

That is one of the most ridiculous posts I've seen on this forum. I know fifteen or so people who have played GTA games and none of them are even slightly "gangster". None of them ever "spout off lines" from the game.
My guess is the people who do are too young (and immature) to be playing the games anyway.

I agree a silhouette would look good, and maybe a camera pointing towards the exit as long as it doesn't clutter the wall.

Also, to me it doesn't look like the chair's back legs are far enough away from the wall for it to be leaning back that much.

Overall very impressive bg.

Couple of small things, I think the the back leg gets a bit too narrow at the ankle/foot. Also the front foot looks as though it's pointed up too much, but maybe I'm just being picky.

Hmm, tough argument this one... Piracy is wrong, but I agree with what Timosity said, that companies are over estimating how much money thay are losing because people who have pirated software probably woouldn't buy it anyway.
My brother gave me a CD that he got from a friend at university, on it are full versions of Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Acrobat etc etc etc.
I have used many of the programs on the CD, programs that I would never have payed the £3500+ it would cost to buy them at (greatly inflated) retail price because I simply couldn't afford it.

Recently I downloaded the trial version of Adobe Photoshop CS. It's all too easy to find the required serial number to remove the time limits of the trial. Same goes for just about every program available.
People are always going to take advantage of the fact they can get free software and I really don't think there will ever be a way to combat that.

I don't have any problem with people pirating the Adobe/Macromedia kind of software for personal use, because the main users are companies that have no problem paying £400 here, there and everywhere.
Games, IMO, are different though, the main buyer of games is Joe Public, and although they are insanely over-priced (£44.99 RRP for a PS2 game? Fuck off...  ::)) piracy of games has the potential to hit game makers hard and in the long run put them out of business.

Maybe my logic is flawed, maybe not, but personally I will never pay over £30 for any piece of software, be it Macromedia Flash MX or Pandora Tomorrow... Both of which I have.

He needs more shading and all the other things mentioned in your (now locked) thread about him.

e.g. Armour needs to be improved, maybe give him a nose, his left arm is smaller than his righ etc.

At the moment he's very much only black/flesh coloured which imho isn't good... just needs more detail (and shading).

Quick p/o

- The green boxes show where the light is hitting the wrong sides of the bar.
- Changed the shadow of the stool.
- Changed the shadow of the bar.
- Changed the shadow of the broken table.

The shadows in my edit aren't right but they are a little better.

There is far too much light coming from that window though, if there is lighting inside the bar/pub then the shadows would be different and if the window is the only light source then the bar/pub and everything in it would be darker the further away from the window it is.

Thanks for the info lads (don't know how I missed that link Haddas, cheers for that).

I'm pretty sure I'll go for a Wacom Intuos 2, probably the 9" x 12", which I can get for just over £200 (around $370 US).

Looking around the web that seems like a pretty good price and after reading a fair few good reviews I'm very impressed with the features.

Unfortunately it turns out I'm going to have to buy a new computer, which will mean I can get my Wacom for a while longer, but I'm looking forward to building my own computer from scratchÃ,  :)

Thanks again.

General Discussion / Graphics Tablet Poser...
Mon 05/07/2004 23:27:01
Hello all,

I'm considering buying a graphics tablet and I wondered if any of you kind folks here could recommend any specific models or warn me of any "dodgy" ones there might be about  :P

Money isn't really a problem, I don't mind parting with my hard earned wages 'cause I'm damn sure it'll get a lot of use.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dave.

General Discussion / Re: Game with 3 charcter!
Mon 05/07/2004 20:09:11
Yeah he probably was joking.

What I meant was a good game with one character could well be a bit shabby when stretched to having three... If it wasn't done well.

I get the feeling Tanker just wants to be different so he's seen as the best, but I'm probably being harsh.

Having said that, and admittedly not being his biggest fan, I am interested in seeing how his game (The Assasins presumably ??? ) turns out.

From the little I know about the game I can see how it would be improved by adding more characers and I look forward to playing it if and when it is completed.

Tanker, from what you've said you think that adding a couple of extra characters to your game will make it better. That is not the case.
It seems you want to make a game with 3 characters almost for the sake of it or just to be different (maybe I'm wrong).
If I was writing a game storyline and I felt it would benefit from extra characters then I'd add them but only if it would deffinately make ithe game better.

If (in your oppinion) it will make your game will be better then, as Kinoko said, go for it.

The arm with the hand missing is a lot bigger (more muscular) than his left arm. Also it looks a little like his head is stiched on beacuse there is a "seam" around his neck.

And ditto for all the suggestions so far. Cool looking charater, just needs some work (and a nose maybe :P)

I like it a lot, as Frisby said there is too much light coming under the door... And maybe the light coming from the lamp should be more a pool of light rather than the harsh beam it is now.

Top notch overall though.

When she looks at thing she will get her glasses from her pocket or from around her neck and then wear them to focus on objects... is this a good or bad idea?

I like the idea, but it could get a bit tedious having her put on and take off her glasses all the time. Just for reading things or looking at small details would be fine though (Maybe that's what you meant anyway?)

Sorry iWAN, I wasn't helpful at all.

I think your original was pretty damn good and Darth's edit made it even better.

Maybe you could add a headband? I dunno, it might be too much but it could look good...

Edit: dg makes it known that he thinks this character resembles neither Mrs. Goggins or Jimmy Saville.

I don't really want to take them to court over so small an ammount of money when the court costs would probably be a lot more than I'm going to court for!

Four words: no win, no fee  ;D
