General Discussion / Re: payment options?
Sun 16/10/2011 15:37:22
There are a lot of ECommerce services (like FastSpring that Darius mentioned) that wrap around PayPal, and also add other methods of payment, which is an advantage. AFAIK, the famous ones are FastSprint, BMT Micro and Plimus.
Here's a thread discussing them.

Hurp durp, update the thread, maybe? Even indiegames.com and RPS have caught up!

Ha! It wouldn't be a real OSD thread if all the links worked properly!

As I understand it, the current process is as follows:
1. Ask CJ for permission to commit code to SVN.
2. Open a thread to get feedback from the community (optional, but recommended)
3. When you feel satisfied enough with what you have done, commit the code to the current development branch.
4. When the time comes and CJ wants to release a new candidate version, he goes through all the changes made, decides what goes in and out, and fixes stuff if needed.

Yes, of course it can be improved, but currently that is how CJ wants it, and it worked thus far because there weren't so many changes made.

In the future, assuming there will be more and more changes, I guess that CJ will want to change stuff, but maybe not, it's really up to him.
I agree to the suggestion on a new subforum, that can definitely help.
As for how to ensure quality and the dedicated panel suggestion, the way I see it there are actually three different subjects here:
1. Is the feature really desired?
The whole community has a say here, where final say belongs to CJ unless he delegates this to some panel of responsible people.
2. Was the commited code up to the required standards?
Currently only CJ decides on that. A dedicated panel for this can be a good idea. That panel will have to decide on what are the required standards and how to enforce them.
3. Does the feature work as intended? Do all other features still work?
This is also something that the whole community has a say in, where there could also be another panel of volunteers with less programming knowledge but still want to help, to test the new features, and from time to time also test all existing features to verify they still work.

That's great news monkey_05_06, I'm happy you're back on your feet.  :)
Like Grim I also wondered why you're doing pizza delivery, since you're obviously a very good programmer. Since you lack that piece of paper, I was wondering if you considered or made an attempt in the direction of freelancing.
I'm not sure since I never tried it myself, but I think that in those freelancing websites out there, people can hire you based on portfolios/experience, and very likely that they will not care about degrees...

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Re: AGS moods

For all of those suffering from this problem, the solution is simple:
Always develop a comedy game and a dark game simultaneously. Then work on the one you feel like based on your mood.

Hmmm, I actually liked the cartoony style. I think that LSL6 is one of my favorite games ever...
Though I do agree that an "Anchorman" style Larry would be hillarious.  ;D
I also agree with mkennedy, LSL1 was already remade, they should remake 2 & 3 (and maybe 4 as well  :D).

I just read/played the 3 last interviews/gamerviews(TM), really fantastic interviews!
I'm downloading "The Unfolding Spider" as I write this...

I have just read the script for Nosferatu. The writing is beautiful, the art is breathtaking and since the scope is really small I see no real reason not to carry on with this game. Admittedly it will be short and the gameplay is limited, but the experience will definitely be worth it, it has a lot of character in it.

A very useful resource, for both inspiration and nostalgia...

Actually, I believe cat is referring to another rumor that was running about here, regarding another secret society of AGSers that is unrelated to the bakers dozen.
I am quite confident these are two completely different societies with different goals in mind, though there might be some overlap in its members (or actually not, since both societies do not really exist).

There is a module for this!

Take a look at jerakeen's Particle System Module
Download the demo and switch through the examples, you'll see the starfield. The demo also comes with the source code so you shouldn't have trouble integrating this with your game.

Hey Bill, played the game and overall really enjoyed it!

General Discussion / Re: ParkingGoat.com

Hey Dan, thanks for the bookmark and the input!  :D

Like you, I also don't consider myself to have any knowledge or insight on web design and aesthetics, so for now I went with an existing default template, and might get a designer sometime in the future.

For now I'm gonna leave it like it is. Since I already wasted a lot of time on it, I just wanna get back to making games.

@Ponch: I might, but nothing too soon if that was what you were implying...  ;) i have other plans for now. Also I am way behind on my OSDs, I still haven't played the one monkey made and all that followed...

@Mods: Thanks, and indeed you're right, retro is in right now, nothing llike an empty forum to warm your heart...

Wait, I think I see someone in the sky!

Is that Grundislav?

@Wonkyth: Thank you, and I know what you mean. I was stuck in the planning phase for years, the best way to overcome it is by just pushing through.

@Ali: Hahaha, yep, Google sure know their stuff... I think there is a way for me to block certain ads, but I am going to leave it this way, it's just too funny.

@Ponch: Thanks, but aren't you mad that I didn't put that quote on the home page?  ;)

@Babar:  :o :o :o

Editor Development / Re: AGS Draconian Edition

Well done Alan, it looks really nice!

About the vertical guide lines, I don't know if you did it already, but if you didn't, then it would be nice if each vertical nesting level had each own color. I have it in visual studio via an addon, and it really helps things look nice and neat.

And regarding the dark skin you did, it would be great if users would be given the option to create their own skin, though probably a lot of dirty work to code that.
