General Discussion / Old Sprite Jams?
Mon 08/09/2003 11:34:36
Before I start:

For those who don't know, the Sprite jams used to take place on #ags (IRC) before someone (I think it was Layabout) moved them to the forums as a regular thing.

Now, all this happened before I became a member, so I wanted to know just how it all worked. Did you decide on a topic and then meet up after an hour? Was there a special channel for it?

I would like for these 'old skool' jams to be revived. I think we could create some great stuff with them.

Anyway, what do you think? Ideas?

I am going to start a beat 'em up starring agsers using MUGEN but I need your help (yes, that's right, YOU).

I started a couple of characters for it and then realised it'll take me a while to make just ONE character, never mind 30 or so.

This is where you come in.

If you want to be in the game, make yourself as a character using the engine, then send it to me. Once I have 5 or so, then I will release the game, and afterwards have regular updates for new characters.

Hope you can join in!

NOTE: You need the DOS version of MUGEN which can be found HERE

This arrived in my e-mail the other day, I thought it was quite funny:

Microsoft vs GM

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way
computers have enhanced our lives, read on.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the
computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with
technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00
cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon".

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release

stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be
driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a
new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would
have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut
off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue.
For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your
car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to
reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable,
five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five
percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be
replaced by asingle "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning
light.

7.The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and
refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned
the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to
drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same
manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Right, my dad showed me this today, and I found it quite cool. Sorry if you have seen it before.

Go to the search engine GOOGLE and type in 'google' backwards (or 'elgoog' for the less intelligent among us...)

Click 'I'm feeling lucky' and tell me what you find, dear chums.......

General Discussion / New compo idea
Fri 02/05/2003 20:37:59
I thought of a new competition for the Competitions & Activities forum, but it says to post ideas her first, so here goes.

Ahem......The CHARACTER COMPO! (working title)

As you can probably guess from that carefully thought up title, the participants have to draw characters, someone you would find in an adventure game. The previous winner would make up the rules (eg. a carnival worker, 256 colours).

He/she can also add a optional custom animation for the char to do into the rules (eg. blowing up a balloon).

I only thought this would work, because we already have the background & music competitions & I thought this could too be interesting. I would be willing to make up the first one.

Also, on a side note, I think it would be a good idea to zip up some of the backgounds, tunes and possibly characters (if the compo goes ahead) into a pack for those not gifted with such skills. Kind of like Insta-Game.

Whadya think?

Does anyone know any? Preferably easier to use than the cut-scenes in AGS are?
