Critics' Lounge / Re: Scummbar revisited

QuoteI'm not saying your work is dirt, rather the opposite. I give the harshest crits to the most promising works. Seeing as you've come so far with the 3d design, it's a shame it's being ruined by the textures and the render method.

The last thing i was looking for was "wow thats great!", I'd much rather someone pull it apart and say where I'm going wrong.. thanks ;)

It would of probably been easier to do as you've suggested in the first place, than to of used the shaders, i don't know if you've used them but they are awful  to get shadows right. To use textures and shaders they often come out very dark

I'll go back and have a rethink
thanks ildu

@ FSi
In context with the game it'll make sense  ;)

Heres my re creation of the Scummbar, its kinda based on the one from MI4...
they were done in Truespace 6, using UVtoon shaders to give a 2D feel

Wanted background artist and character artist for a remake of an AGS game

I don't want to name the game as yet publicity, but i do have the original authors consent
The main focus right now is a 3 room demo, with two characters, revamped graphics in the style of CMI or just a general clean up for a larger screen res and to lose the Lucas arts style GUI black space

if you interested drop me a pm and I'll give more details

If I'm not mistaken that's 24 possible combinations (4*3*2) :)

I'd say coming up with ways to get complex things done using a limited set of tools is more trouble than learning how to use the proper tools.

Simple puzzles can be done without scripting, but things like turning off hotspots after they have fulfilled their purpose to avoid using variables always put me off.

If you want to throw together a game using minimal effort, go get Klik'n'Play or something.
we used 16 phase per pedistal (actually only 15, the last wasnt needed) x4, x 5 possible options with each of statues and remove
it was a total pain in the ass to do, given more time i would of coded it in flash but i had 2 weeks  to finish the last half of the game ::)

In the Flash game i did called handyman wanted theres a puzzle where 4 statues needed to be placed on 4 pedistals, in the right order to trugger a book appearing.. so thats 16 possible combinations

we used flow charts, Lassie at the moment doesn't handle "if" "then "goto" variables very well so the whole thing was done by switching phases off and on, which is a bit like cracking a nut with a Abomb to do

i did a tutorial for flow charts, obviously its a Lassie example but the theory should work on anything

Check it isn't placed somewhere where air can't get around it. Sometimes overheating can lead it to restart before windows.

This is the most simple thing to check.

Oh, and sinsin, using the word "electricity" to explain the workings of a complex electronic system like a computer sort of makes things hard to understand :P

A problem with one capacitor would just full stop not allow it to boot.
the fujitsu had 6 knackered and it would boot.. it just got worse over a matter of days
they are connected in parallel, a capacitor stores power so even in a damaged state there will be some charge, left over from the last attempt.. if the where in series well yes one would kill the computer dead.. try playing with a capacitor from a TV or fluesent light.. it'll hold the charge for week/months.. maybe not play unless you want to be zapped by mega volts lol
marvelous little things capacitors, its basicly what a stun gun or a electric fence uses
#27
the first time i came across it was on a 18month old Fujitsu, we thought it was the video card as the fan on it was siezing up, changed the card and it worked.. for a day! spent a week trying  different hardware testing software which showed everything was ok  ::)
in the end i found a release note about Fujitsu's burning out the capacitors, there was 6 popped in this one, then in two weeks 2 other mates PC's did the same! AMD and Intel's so its not unique to types MB's
#28
check the capacitors around the CPU

the one arrowed has popped, when those go a pc will just keep restarting as soon as it tries to load the devices
so if any are brown and manky looking you will need a new motherboard.. Maplin have some good deals on motherboard bungles at the moment

read the fine print.. a lot of hosts pull a sly one when it comes to bandwidth overflow and you quite often get charged a huge amount

A downloadable Lassie game was released on saturday 30 meg, at the moment its consuming 28GB on avarage every 24hrs, plus people are downloading other games on the site which increases it even more

my own site was wiped out in 3 days (10gb at the time) with a simple 2meg game lol

once the blogger and game sites get wind of the games and hot link its very hard to keep control

like i say, read the contract small print, if an offer sounds to good to be true it often is

The Young Ones
Bottom
only fools and horses
open all hours
porridge

then classic channel four movies
trainspotting
lock, stock and two smoking barrels

i saw it first time round  :-[ and the way the Christan fanatics kicked off was just as funny as the film, very clever of the Python crew.. if you want to get mass attention, take the piss out of religion.. it works every time
they couldn't of done it at a better time as far as the UK was concerned, the goody two shoes where still reeling over the punk rock scene and probably thought things couldn't get worse. i bet they thought the world was coming to an end and a total moral decline when they got wind of young Brian lol
Personally i couldn't see what the fuss was about.. the must disturbing thing was seeing Graham Chapman's nods  ::)

not AGS but American McGee's Alice, 3D 3rd person game, built with the Quake3  engine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_McGee's_Alice

Silent hill 3 on the PS2 is a female lead

i met my wife when she was 17, i'm 3 years older, the only person whoever had a problem with age difference was my mother.. which suprised me because my old man was 7 years older than her!
i have three daughters, 2 over 16 and they tend to go for slightly older boys, maybe its because they get chance to see guys in the same age group grow up and realise what prats they are lol

There also other games from the lassie engine used by Something Amiss,
John Green's Nearly Departed http://www.gmacwill.com/lassie/files/games/nd_win.zip (demo)
Also some very good flash adventures at http://pinheadgames.com
Nick Bounty: A Case of the Crabs
Tales of the Odd: Brain Hotel
Nick Bounty: The Goat in the Grey Fedora

and my 2 feeble game based on  6 Day Assassin  ::) built with Lassie

lol we don't own our house and the only thing worth anything is a 1990 1000cc Yamaha, its actually worth a lot of money but at an auction it would fetch bugger all ::)

I'm going to go ahead and make it as difficult as possible to tie the game to the series from the titles or just make a clone

theres nothing better than bad press, ban something or kick up a fuss and it often plays into the authors, musicians, our whatever's favour
look at the sex pistols or marilyn manson, both just hit out at anything that can offend, if you ever listen to MM his albums target different issues to piss people off and he setup a different persona for each album

I've got the actual address to contact .. but its a letter/mail job which intern would give them a name and address if they said "no" and i still went on with the project.

@ Dan_N_GameZ i haven't seen *the End" for years and Christ mate, you've got it damn close, maybe to close,  what i intend to do is more or less the character's saying their names and the same characteristics, mannerisms and same references to past story lines and maybe some of the cut scenes they did in the shows

anyway its  long way off, i may risk direct contact armed with story boards or a quick demo, if they say "no way", i can go the parody route or rework the story to fit something else

@ Tartalo the Japanese are pretty cool, i know with the motorcycle industry they are very tolerant, but they seem to realize any publicity works in their favour, but Harley Davidson have the name so heavily copyrighted technically you couldn't call your child "Harley"

thanks Zaidyer, i actually hadn't thought about them threatening my web host.. that wouldn't be good.. i don't think i have any enermy's , you never know tho ::)
thanks for all the input up to now, its much appreciated :)

its not going to make money, not that i couldn't use it!
in 5 years its the first time I've had a game idea, thats had a start, middle and an end, and achievable...
I've thought about clones of the X Files, Supernatural etc, but could never string the ideas together to make a game, but tongue in cheek, slightly vulgar humor comes almost natural lol
#40
The game is based on the "Young Ones" from 1982 to 84, apart from the title and character names, i'm using nothing from the show, new music, voice actor, and 2D art, the game starts where the series ends.. the consensus by everyone i've asked is to just do it, by time and IF anyone noticed it'll had its moment anyway, like  ProgZmax said its a big virtual world, i might get shut down but its already out there

i might have a go at doing it above board, its just who to ask lol
