I know a few of you guys have done fan games based on BBC TV programs, Red Dwarf and Dr Who spring to mind,  i was wondering if anyone has actually approached the owners for permission, who actually is the owner? is it the writer or the channel who showed it?
Whats the worst that could happen to a lone game developer if they ran into trouble?
Has anyone managed to get permission from a company like the BBC?

i know i but a pimple on the bum of the world of games making, but I'd hate to think X amount of years work, could be squashed by sh*t loads of technicalities

yes, sorry  i ment user account.. you don't need to delete your own, takes two seconds and its got to be worth a try

another thing you can do is delete the network connection, then just install it again.. it resets any changes that may be conflicting.. all our computers connected to the net thro a single computer, when we switched to a router feck all worked, i just deleted the connections , windows detected them again, and setup a new network on each PC everything worked fine

the wife had a similar problem with her laptop.. we created a new user account and messenger worked find, it only takes seconds so well worth a try  :)

my advice would be to do a half assed escape the room Flash game, in the end credits put your other games titles with a link (easy to do in flash) and honestly your AGS game populararty  will go up over night. just post a link on gamershood.com or something similar

i remade my remake of 6D Assassin and its had over 20.000 hits and the download version has been downloaded nearly 2000 times in a month, not bad considering it had a huge bug for the first 3 days that made it impossible to play ::)

Theres a huge adience out there of people who seem to have nothing better to do than play, most of the games are bloody aweful!

the big downside is you rarely get feedback unless they can't do the game, the amount of people that can't get their heads round a point and click user interface is unreal

Thanks for the information, Dave & Woodz! I'll look into Cubecart for now but you're right, Plimus sounds interesting :D I don't have fantastico either, not sure what it is. Sounds fantastic though! I was a little worried about using osCommerce. But thats mostly because I never quite understand how to get open source things working :p Cheers guys!
a lot of web hosting packages that have mysql, perl and php have various free script tools,  fantastico is one of those, in seconds you can install websites, forums, blogs etc, if you don't like them you can uninstall just as quickly ;D
the big downside is the scripts can be out of date, and its sometimes harder to update the bloody things than it is to install from scratch ::)

i think its part of the shipping method if i remember right

theres also
http://www.cubecart.com
http://www.zen-cart.com/

a guy i know who did 3D models used Zen cart and that did download link feature

if you have fantastico on your website it has all three or if you want to have a look about i can sharp install one for you on my server to play with

Theres http://www.oscommerce.com/ which is a very good shopping cart solution.. and is free, handles paypal and credit cards
it can be a bit hard to figure out at first but well worth the effort

That doesn't scare me. The price of filling up my gas tank scares me more.
i second that!

hes got quite a long time to fix it, hopefully someone will say where he's going wrong

i had to watch my old man go down hill for a lot longer, really heart breaking to see and i know where your coming from.
for him it was over alarmingly quickly, i never even got chance to say goodbye, but it was a god send for him because the scenario for his condition was really unpleasant

if you have any unfinished business get it sorted out m8, i didn't and it still gets to me 10 years on :(

how much webspace would you need? i'm enough spare space to host the project website, but not a load of converted games
its a paid host, with php, mysql etc, i can do it as an addon domain so its not a sub of the main domain

i'm looking for a character artist to do .. at the moment 6 characters, the main one animated, to walk talk and actions

the plan was to just do 3D generated images but true cartoon will look a lot better  ;D

a bonus would be a Flash anmator, the characters aren't pixel art and would be about 300 pixel in hieght

theres no time lmits or pressure, mainly just a static main character to setup the rooms to start with

if your interested give me a pm and i'll fill you in with the game details, this is a long term project and a long standng serious attempt but honestly, no offence intended, if your just jumping on the team bandwagon don't bother, i can draw stick men myself :P

i've been using http://www.box.net/, no annoying popups, timers etc
1gb storage but its limted to 10meg uploads unless you upgrade

if you don't mind posting on forums, you can get free hosting from http://www.ej.am/
i have a backup site there just incase my payed host goes down
basicly you need to do 15 post  and you get a cpanel hosting package, the more you post the better options you get, you need to be active tho and not do short posts
the big down side to this kind of site is they are prone to hacker attacks and twitchy servers.. ejam have been 100% reliable for the 4 months i've had an account

Only nothing is free so everything "free" in the internet world is going to have some drawback

oh bollox.. and i had the Splinter League Adventure Game Studio T shirts printed up and everything :P

nice one CJ, i cottoned on quite quickly.. i checked the date lol
#55
been there, done that, got the T Shirt!
Just before Xmas our PC fried the CPU fan, it didn't even go noisy like they normally do, now our processor is twitch as hell and loves to shut down randomly
it also seems to know when your making progress and neglected to save for awhile
none of my software auto saves either, it can be soul destroying
#56
I guess we'll just have to form a splinter group and take the old AGS underground, Flood the market with classic AGS just to pee Sony off  ;)

??? it looks a strange website for storing games, there is no reference to AGS games what so ever
me personally I'd rather host my own games or let someone i know host it, i do flash games and its a feckin nightmare keeping track of them plus hotlink issues it causes

i honestly can't see anyone taking you up on you offer, theres enough established AGSers offering storage on AGS relevant sites

theres and energy conservation game here which kinda fun :

Lately with doing flash stuff, its worrying how many people can't get there heads round point and click cursor actions, so it might be one thing to consider if you do decide to make something, because big instructions don't help!

Apparently the XP help system can throw a wobbly and start using 100% of the system resources which will more or less render your desktop useless, there is a hot fix for it and effects pre service pack 2 releases

like whats been sed try safe mode check the event viewer
you could also check what is actually booting up by clicking start> run and enter "msconfig" ...click the last tab "startup" and see what programs run as you log in, its normally anti virus software, printer managers, office... stuff that you would expect

if anything looks suspect uncheck the box and see if the pc will start normally, or do a search on the file name to find out what it does
