there is a definite slump in quality, 3-4 years ago when i did MAGS, i was up against some really good short games.. mine sucked! but i was sh*te at coding in AGS, i did try tho lol! i learnt a hell of a lot from it never the less

i'd love to do monthly games but alas i'm not  doing AGS at the moment :(

Well, I wouldn't say "regularly" updated. Last update was august 4, 2005. I was surprised when I clicked on the link and saw that he'd finally updated it. I'm gonna have to check out the new additions.

You can actually make a graphical text adventure that uses point - n - click, like Shadowkeep or Deja Vu or Uninvited, in AGS. Some of the interactive fiction engines, like Quest and TADS have graphic and music support, too. I would suggest Quest, but it's shareware, so you eventually have to pay for it.

TADS is very simple to use, the HTML version is good for image based game
i made my first ever game with TADS i recommend it

i had a similar problem, ever thing i'd worked on looked washed out on the new monitor, i was sure it was down to the monitor but on check other peoples work it wasn't the case
the old monitor could only handle 800x600 screen res

You get so used to the old monitor, my old one was wayout on the red scale and contrast,
anything grey looked brown but i just got so used to it i never noticed till we upgraded lol

if you look at this thread theres some pics of my bike and i've mimiced the before and after between the monitors

I maintain that this is a hardware issue. Don't do anything drastic until you've tried a change in power supply or ram.

Have you updated your motherboard drivers lately? I know it seems like a pointless endeavour but you'd be surprised how many other issues this cleared up for me.
i second what Mr Fiddle is saying..
personally i'd visiually check the motherboard, fans etc, check the ram hasn't detached, take them out and refit them one at a time boot after you install each one, check the HD plugs, swap the power one for one that isn't used

update the BIOS and drivers

if it still does it i'd install win98 se which isn't as fussy as ME or even try win2000 the compaq i have ran 2000

check the capacitors havent popped around the CPU.. the tops of them should be shiny.. most have a cross engraved into them, if they over heat the cross splits so they don't explode, quite often they split and leak if the CPU over heats
look at this image
http://heliosstudios.net/temp/DSCF0646_small.jpg

a friend of mine HADÃ,  a 18 month old Fujitsu computer and the vdeo card fan siezed, changed the card and like Mr Flibble pc, it would shut down half way thro boot up.. ran every test under the sun...Ã,  Ã, and it in theory it should of ran, it never showed up the problem with the capacitors but thats what had blown

if it helps i have a P3 motherboard with a proccessor, dunno what mhz it is tho or what the onboard video is, ...

edit:
it a compaq p800 probably this:
http://developer.novell.com/yes/61980.htm

i also have the new video card we bought for the fujitsu, its a 256 meg NVIDIA i think the guy wants £30 for it

theres a program call fraps that can capture game animation... i used it with 6 day assassin when we tried to convert it to flash, you can set how many FPS you want to take etc, it worked best in a window rather than full screen the quality is a lot better
its used a lot in games like GP500 for online videos

the demo only records for 30 secs if i remember right and there is also a water mark across the top of the screen, but not in the way of walk type animation

hi Ali i haven't used Blender for a long time.. mainly coz our computer sucks and always struggled with it in the past.... but its had a bit of an upgrade lately so i thought i'd have another go at it  ;D
Theres a niffty feature in Blender i was never aware of, for cartoon shading

i had a look at the links.. some great stuff! thanks

the easiest way would be Poser to get realistic looking characters, but even that isn't easy, they often look very wooden when the walk or move

poser5 was free earlier in the year, from Content Paradise dunno if it still is

you also have issues with anti alias problems, which dogged me for years until recently

my games use Poser and the games:
Tales of the Odd: Brain Hotel and Nick Bounty: The Goat in the Grey Fedora from http://www.pinheadgames.com/ where poser altho cartoon rendered

you could use poser animation frames as a template and and redraw them as 2DÃ,  ;)

if you do go the Poser route, get DAZ3D as well, it renders cartoon style a lot better than pre Poser 7 editions

sorry for dragging this from the depths but did anyone ever find it?
i was thinking about sorting out its short comings but like the original game all the resources have gone
i've found the Terence character so i may just redo it from scratch, but a full game rather than the Mags one

Anyway...

Spoiler

I can't use my rifle with the window again after I took the photo. Is this a bug or am I just missing something?

Definitely a bug. That's why I hated this game.
gee thanks
THIS IS NOTÃ,  a finished game, someone found the game and posted links all over the net, it was released for testing and comments on 3 forums and my own site, its buggy and incomplete

this is a remake of the award winning AGS game 6 Day Assassin by Mr Colossal
the plan was to totally remake the game in Flash with the original artwork but the author didn't have the time as none of the resources from the AGS game existed anymore
this is the beta version and still undergoing some final touches but I'm releasing it now for some feedback, testing etc as i maybe offline shortly and intend to finish it in my downtime
a lot of the cut scenes are going to get redone and possible a few extra puzzles in the final game
unfortunately people neglect to add that bit and i get slammed for making a crap game.
if you think this one is bad you should of tried the version that quote relates tooÃ,  :P

the user interface is based on the "curse of monkey island" one, but because of limitations of flash and no right click because it just brings up the flash properties it does appear clumsy at first

Nefarious go and buy Flash 8 and lets see if you can do any betterÃ,  :P

I don't know. I'm not even sure if this is legal. I think some loser ripped off Mr Colossal's great idea. Hmm, I don't see that this is legal anywhere on the game... Be afraid, as your game might be turned into low-quality newbie crap!

i've been an AGS member since 2002 so i'm hardly a newbie (before you look at my profile and and jump on the dates.. i left, changed names between then, ie woodz. Paranoia, back to Woodz and everywhere else now NigeC) ,i made 3 MAGS games 2002/2003, all be it sh*te ones, but hell at least i've tryed, i don't post much unless i need to, theres enough people venting hot air without me joining in

The anoying thing is for me is theres threads like this that i don't know about, telling only half the story, i'm getting slagged off on a beta game that isn't even finished, people find errors such as the bullets and a possible glitch with the rifle.. but no one takes the time to post and tell me! the game redirects to the website ffs but they are more inclined to start a thread and bitch about it elsewhere

but its my mistake for releasing it for testing and it wont happen again in the public domain

2002/2003 all my AGS games where for MAGS and they sucked lol, the game "T.I.T" was probably the closest to anywhere near a reasonable attempt.
i rushed and should of payed more attention to the fine details, buggy games with thin plots don't win prizes but its one hell of a learning curve.. and at least you get something to show and get useful feed back
its so easy to start a huge game only to realise by the end of the first room you don't actually have a story that you can pull off

2007? i still rush but now i do go back and fix problems and T.I.T is on the cards to be redone as  it was intended to be ;)

At the time when i asked Eric, he was busy and the LASSIE_AS engine was in its early days so it didn't represent the original 6 Day Assassin very well so the Flash 6 DA remake never happened.. as time went on i used the script to get some much needed practice and decided to use 3D graphics, and credit the original idea as much as possible

Yeah the font is a bit naff! i must fix t lol
thanks for the comments guys

just an update, a new main character has now been created, loads of the original problems are now fixed, and you can enter the rooms in order
once this is sorted i'm going to remake my Terence Independent Terminator (T.I.T) game that was entered into the 2003 MAGS and actually make the intended game, not the rushed version i released ::) , its a shame the original game seems to be long  gone :(

General Discussion / Re: Linux?

Linux is great... if you haven't been spoilt by Windows software!
if you run a general office system, then Linux is fantastic, The Gimp is a powerful art tool and Blender is great for 3D work, but its all a brand new learning curve, instructions are often long winded and sometimes it requires a lot of thought installing new software
we have Fedora Core 6 on another partition, it runs a lot faster than XP but I like my MS toys and none of them will emulate through the Wine system

i've been working on a Flash based interactive website using the LASSIE-AS game engine as a bit of fun on my game creators site
Paranoia Games

is any one up for a little testing/proof reading?

click on the site logo to enter the interactive site

the interactive site has come on a bit over the last few weeks and a lot of the layout is done
the general public cant get past the second room but there is a way to see the rest
if someone could tell me where the spelling mistakes are and ideas on how to improve things it would be great!
i've added basic puzzles, just to make it a bit more interesting

the things i know about:
cursor needs fixing
6DA room not finished
some duff walk areas
dodgy main character
stop enter room dialog repeating when you re enter a room

i'm working through the above as it type.. well you know what i mean!

to enter full game...
dont go through the double doors, pick up the big box... walk to the foreground barrels, if you move the cursor around just above the inventory dock it should glow read over a hotspot called "talk" use it, it'll skip the brain room and take you to the hallway

the brain room might be going, i can't think of anything more to put in there

things to do
6da room
brain room: either a forground and more detail or lose it
character
fix above problems
add a few more look touchy feely things
cut scene animation and door animation

post you findings here or on the sites forums if you want to join, it would be great  ;D

you can get truespace 3.2 full version for free from the Caligari website, i use it all the time and is very easy to use
then use turbsquid.com or 3D cafe  for free models if you can be bothered to make your own!
if you click on the logo for my website you enter a 3D interactive world that i'm in the middle of building ;)
