It's not 'Heavy Metal' (1981), but your are spot on concerning the time frame, Armageddon.

This film was released in 1982.
A very famous comic artist was involved in it's production (fairly certain you all know him).
He definitely left his surreal & slightly 'psychedelic' mark on the movie.

I still remember the film from the first time it came up in this thread, but I didn't get around to actually watching it yet. I'm a big fan of Giraud's art, so I should definitely get on that.

I do believe this is Once Upon a Time in the West, in the scene where Frank walks down the street and picks off hiding gunmen while Harmonica gives him hints from the window. If it's not that, then it's at least reminiscent of that!
