I like making mix CDs and over the years I've made dozens of them for friends and relatives. I've come to appreciate the art of making a compilation CD, with song selection and ordering being of uttermost importance. The first song needs to grab the listener's attention and I usually choose something highly energetic (e.g.Thunderstruck, by AC/DC) or alternatively something unexpected (e.g. Let the Good Times Roll, by Louis Jordan) which then leads into the next, more fitting song. After the initial sexed-up tracks, about mid-CD, I typically shift down a gear with some slower, mellow or melancholy songs (e.g. Thank You, by Dido). After the low point, the music returns again to a rejuvenated state and usually finishes with a climatic end track (e.g. Demon Days, by Gorillaz) or a comedic track (e.g. Eat It, by Weird Al Yankovic). The songs should flow too.

There have been previous topics on the forums where people discuss their favourite music or what they're currently listening to. This post takes it one step further in which contributors can post songs here to append to a playlist to create a mix CD, with the songs more or less following the structure I've outlined above. Ultimately I want to have a CD I can play in the car and I thought this might be a fun way to do it. I'll start by suggesting Saturday Night Palsy by TISM as track 2. Why track 2? Because it feels more like track 2 rather than track 1. Also, having it as track 2 prevents anyone from suggesting Song 2 by Blur.

PLAYLIST

So please suggest any song you think might fit in the compilation (or even a song you just like) and I'll update the playlist. I will accept any musical genre and in any language. At this stage can we please just have one suggestion per person, and later if the CD spills over 70 minutes of standard audio we can restart with another playlist and you may nominate another song.

Also if there are any other enthusiasts out there please share your style of making a mix CD. Does anyone get creative with album covers?

e.g.

Christopher Cross - Sailing

Mmmm... that's some good mid-tempo rock.

I don't have to suggest a track number, do I? Based on your overview, I would guess around track 10.

Babar

Annie Android's Automated Affection song as the intro track, obviously.
The ultimate Professional Amateur

Now, with his very own game: Alien Time Zone

Eric

I humbly suggest T.Rex's "20th Century Boy" as one of the rejuvenating tracks. I'm loathe to take spot #1, though this has had that spot on many of my own mixes.

Since you yourself said that you will accept any musical genre and in any language. So, here's my suggestion. I understand you might not be able to understand what's being sung, but I request you to, please, listen to it till the very end. If you don't like that one and/or believe it won't fit your criteria, then please listen to this one instead. :)

Nice project, btw. :-D

Playlist updated!

Babar..
Annie Android's Automated Affection is perfect as the first track! It was so obvious!

Eric..
T.Rex - 20th Century Boy works as track 3. I've made track 2 segue into this one.

Gurok..
Christopher Cross - Sailing in at no. 10. Nice song. Never heard it before.

Adeel..
Jagjit Singh is placed at the end of the playlist. Had to listen to it a few times and it seemed like a good finishing track. I must admit I haven't listened to much Pakistani music, but I couldn't help thinking something was missing like a bass guitar. Perhaps Pixel Hunt could do a remix of this one. Maybe Noa can add some backing vocals. Or am I being a bit ambitious?

More suggestions please!

Not sure if it fits the compilation, but Metallica: The House Jack Built is my favorite 8-)

Jagjit Singh is the name of the singer who sang both ghazals. This genre is known as Ghazal (a form of Urdu poetry). Since ghazal is a form of poetry which deals with the subjects of illicit unattainable love (most of the time), that's why great care is taken to compose its music.

I really like the idea of Noa adding some backing vocals, btw! :)

Stupot

Can I suggest System of a Down, Violent Pornography?
It has featured in some of my own playlists and I think it would work well after 2 Princes (good choice Cap'n).

Dualnames

I'm suggesting Ride's Twisterella as probably the most british pop song ever never to have made it in everyone's home. Catchiness feelgoodness, DAM THAT GUITAR RIFF.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Playlist updated. Good work people!  8-)

Hmm.. just realised that MediaFire is blocking sharing of these files.  >:(   I'll provide a zip file with all tracks once the playlist is complete.

Still a few more spots to go. Need a track 4 sandwiched between T-Rex and Ride. And perhaps a few more slower songs around the track 9 mark.

Also the song orderings are only tentative. Feel free to fiercely debate the song orderings.  :P

Billbis

I strongly suggest some Muse. Knights of Cydonia, Map of the Problematique or Unsustainable are my current favorite, but I'll be happy with basically any of there songs.

I went with Knights of Cydonia because of the rockin' guitar at the end. And the horses. It obviously follows System of a Down.

Note: tracks now linked to Youtube vids. Apologies to those with no Youtube access. All tracks will be made available in a zip file once the playlist is complete.

You're a man of taste Bilibis. I'm a long-time Muse fan.

@Monkey424 - can I suggest, how about after this playlist is finished, we have themed playlists. For example, on Spotify I have one playlist that is dedicated to songs about California. Perhaps we could do something like that, or something a bit broader like 'party time' or 'road trip'.

CaptainD

I'm hoping I don't get lynched for this :-D but I'd like to suggest Eliza Doolittle and Paloma Faith for the slower song section.  Though I love Roller Blades and Skinny Genes, my suggestion for a chilled out track is Mr Medicine.  From Paloma, though I love "Upside Down" the most of all her songs, for the chilled out section I'd probably go for "New York".

(Feel free to mock me or call me names guys, but I really like both ED and PF, and I'm not ashamed of it!  :=)

Not today, but these days I'd like to find some time to draw a cover for that Mix-CD.
If someone else it's not already doing...

I think we should call it The Monkey Mix!
