Title: AGS Mix CD
Post by: monkey424 on Wed 13/08/2014 13:46:15
I like making mix CDs and over the years I've made dozens of them for friends and relatives. I've come to appreciate the art of making a compilation CD, with song selection and ordering being of uttermost importance. The first song needs to grab the listener's attention and I usually choose something highly energetic (e.g.Thunderstruck, by AC/DC) or alternatively something unexpected (e.g. Let the Good Times Roll, by Louis Jordan) which then leads into the next, more fitting song. After the initial sexed-up tracks, about mid-CD, I typically shift down a gear with some slower, mellow or melancholy songs (e.g. Thank You, by Dido). After the low point, the music returns again to a rejuvenated state and usually finishes with a climatic end track (e.g. Demon Days, by Gorillaz) or a comedic track (e.g. Eat It, by Weird Al Yankovic). The songs should flow too.

There have been previous topics on the forums where people discuss their favourite music or what they're currently listening to. This post takes it one step further in which contributors can post songs here to append to a playlist to create a mix CD, with the songs more or less following the structure I've outlined above. Ultimately I want to have a CD I can play in the car and I thought this might be a fun way to do it. I'll start by suggesting Saturday Night Palsy by TISM as track 2. Why track 2? Because it feels more like track 2 rather than track 1. Also, having it as track 2 prevents anyone from suggesting Song 2 by Blur.

So please suggest any song you think might fit in the compilation (or even a song you just like) and I'll update the playlist. I will accept any musical genre and in any language. At this stage can we please just have one suggestion per person, and later if the CD spills over 70 minutes of standard audio we can restart with another playlist and you may nominate another song.

Also if there are any other enthusiasts out there please share your style of making a mix CD. Does anyone get creative with album covers?

Christopher Cross - Sailing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyYhZ9HH8cI)

Mmmm... that's some good mid-tempo rock.

I don't have to suggest a track number, do I? Based on your overview, I would guess around track 10.

Annie Android's Automated Affection song as the intro track, obviously.

I humbly suggest T.Rex's "20th Century Boy" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB6WZu8IAZg) as one of the rejuvenating tracks. I'm loathe to take spot #1, though this has had that spot on many of my own mixes.

Since you yourself said that you will accept any musical genre and in any language. So, here's my suggestion (http://grooveshark.com/s/Muskara+Kar+Mila+Karo/2L4fmL?src=5). I understand you might not be able to understand what's being sung, but I request you to, please, listen to it till the very end. If you don't like that one and/or believe it won't fit your criteria, then please listen to this one (http://grooveshark.com/s/Mujhse+Bichad+Ke+Khus+Rahte+Ho/4hzraN?src=5)instead. :)

Nice project, btw. :-D

Playlist updated!

Babar..
Annie Android's Automated Affection is perfect as the first track! It was so obvious!

Eric..
T.Rex - 20th Century Boy works as track 3. I've made track 2 segue into this one.

Gurok..
Christopher Cross - Sailing in at no. 10. Nice song. Never heard it before.

Adeel..
Jagjit Singh is placed at the end of the playlist. Had to listen to it a few times and it seemed like a good finishing track. I must admit I haven't listened to much Pakistani music, but I couldn't help thinking something was missing like a bass guitar. Perhaps Pixel Hunt could do a remix of this one. Maybe Noa (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=10573) can add some backing vocals. Or am I being a bit ambitious?

More suggestions please!

Jagjit Singh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagjit_Singh_%28singer%29) is the name of the singer who sang both ghazals. This genre is known as Ghazal (a form of Urdu poetry) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghazals). Since ghazal is a form of poetry which deals with the subjects of illicit unattainable love (most of the time), that's why great care is taken to compose its music.

I really like the idea of Noa adding some backing vocals, btw! :)

It has featured in some of my own playlists and I think it would work well after 2 Princes (good choice Cap'n).

I'm suggesting Ride's Twisterella as probably the most british pop song ever never to have made it in everyone's home. Catchiness feelgoodness, DAM THAT GUITAR RIFF.

Playlist updated. Good work people!  8-)

Hmm.. just realised that MediaFire is blocking sharing of these files.  >:(   I'll provide a zip file with all tracks once the playlist is complete.

Still a few more spots to go. Need a track 4 sandwiched between T-Rex and Ride. And perhaps a few more slower songs around the track 9 mark.

Also the song orderings are only tentative. Feel free to fiercely debate the song orderings.  :P

I strongly suggest some Muse. Knights of Cydonia, Map of the Problematique or Unsustainable are my current favorite, but I'll be happy with basically any of there songs.

I went with Knights of Cydonia because of the rockin' guitar at the end. And the horses. It obviously follows System of a Down.

Note: tracks now linked to Youtube vids. Apologies to those with no Youtube access. All tracks will be made available in a zip file once the playlist is complete.

You're a man of taste Bilibis. I'm a long-time Muse fan.

@Monkey424 - can I suggest, how about after this playlist is finished, we have themed playlists. For example, on Spotify I have one playlist that is dedicated to songs about California. Perhaps we could do something like that, or something a bit broader like 'party time' or 'road trip'.
Title: Re: AGS Mix CD
Post by: CaptainD on Fri 15/08/2014 19:11:54
I'm hoping I don't get lynched for this :-D but I'd like to suggest Eliza Doolittle and Paloma Faith for the slower song section.  Though I love Roller Blades and Skinny Genes, my suggestion for a chilled out track is Mr Medicine.  From Paloma, though I love "Upside Down" the most of all her songs, for the chilled out section I'd probably go for "New York".

(Feel free to mock me or call me names guys, but I really like both ED and PF, and I'm not ashamed of it!  :=)

Stu..
I like the themed playlist idea. I suggest Pop Masturbation Music for the next one.

Cap'n D..
I said ONE song suggestion not fucking five! Did you not read my simple instructions? Or are you trying to piss me off? Why the nerve! Your account should be suspended for this! Where's Darth Mandarb when you need him? But seriously, thanks for your recommendation. I've now listened to some Eliza Doolittle and Paloma Faith and decide I like them. However since you have already chosen Spin Doctors, the girls will have to wait for Pop Masturbation.

Duals..
I prefer Broken Social Scene to your earlier suggestion, Ride. So the new track will take precedence. Ride can go back in their box.

AprilSkies..
Thanks for volunteering to draw the album cover. I suggest AGS Anthems as the title (although Monkey Mix does have a nice ring to it).

Love your work AprilSkies! Looks perfect to me. But if you want to add some AGS characters I suggest the classics like Trilby, Charley Foxtrot or the Blue Suited Man from Demon Day (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/381/).

Hi Tabata! Why don't you suggest a track? Any German folk music you could suggest? Like Rammstein, or something?

I'm not sure that there are enough of you who like it,
but I love this german song very much  http://youtu.be/wCcJuN47UcY
as for english I like a lot of Adele's songs like http://youtu.be/jCya1yiFFP4   (but all probably not the kind of songs you are looking for)
as for other (and faster  ) music that might fit a bit better
I also like ,,normal casual" stuff like this http://youtu.be/hZMpUnXqvZ4

Cheers Taby.

I went with Hangover because the compilation desperately needed some of that upbeat 'normal' mainstream stuff at the beginning. However, I would have selected Halt Dich An Mir Fest had it been suggested earlier.

I've noticed there is a lack of female artists on the compilation, which is something I'm usually conscious of when making these CDs. There are many brilliant female artists out there.

This thread seems to have lost its mojo! C'mon guys! What's your favourite song? Someone put Captain D out of his misery and back his second song suggestion (unless there is something you feel more worthy). What about some techno from the tech-savvy coders? Or a melody from the moderators? Or some psychedelic punk rock from the hippy flower children who lurk in the depths of the Advanced Technical Forum. What about some more music from AGS games? Post it here!

So far we have about 56 mins of audio on the CD and a few more spots to fill. This is presented graphically below.

(http://s14.directupload.net/images/user/140717/nqc3ayqk.gif) I don't hope so! (http://s14.directupload.net/images/user/140717/nqc3ayqk.gif)

YES!

I'll let this one slide. It's camp and catchy and only 45 seconds long so it's going on the CD!

This is clearly sexist, or possibly rodentist.

:-D

I found another version of Space Taxi on Youtube, which is a continuous loop of the track extending to 10 minutes! Needless to say it gets pretty grating after a while.

Unfortunately the original track was way too short! So, ingeniously, I've padding it out by mixing it with some Kraftwerk.

SPACE TAXI KRAFTWERK REMIX (http://www.mediafire.com/listen/453ub3zkdcgd1qu/space_taxi_remix.mp3)

Sounds pretty horrible actually!

I guess I'm a hypocrite now for selecting a second song too. And I don't want to be rodentist.  :(

So Captain D gets to go to the ball too with Eliza Doolittle in at No. 8!!

Yay!

You chose wisely, young monkey, for being a rodentist is so much worse than being a dentist. (nod)

If there's still room on the cd, I'd like to put on "me and Julio down by the shoolyard" by Paul Simon. Why? Well it's got that sweet ags-feeling.

It was against the law, what the students saw... or something like that... in any case, nice choice Lasca! ;-D

Done! In at No. 7.

I felt Simon was lonely since the split with Garfunkel, so I've selected a duet version of the song with Basement Jaxx (c/o DJ Dale B)

CD NEARLY FINISHED!!!   Need one more song!

Please someone suggest something so we can wrap this up and I can resume work on my neglected game.

I don't care what song it is. I'll fit it in somewhere.

You seem to have fewer of the chill ones, so here, with chillout  as well as energy, is:

Thanks Babar. I'll add it to the CD. Didn't you already suggest a song earlier though? Hmm.. No I don't think so, I would have remembered.

Also, I've just been advised of this other version of space taxi..

OTHER VERSION OF SPACE TAXI (http://www.myvideo.de/watch/7421347/Stefan_Raab_Space_Taxi)

I'm going to use this track instead of my horrible remix.

Updates pending..

CD COMPLETED!!!

The playlist (incl. album cover) is available to download on the first page of this thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=50848.0).

I'm pretty happy with this. It really is a proper mix of pretty much all genres - pop, rock, dance, heavy metal, German techno and Pakistani ghazal. There's even a ditty from an AGS game. To boot, the album is complemented with a kick-ass cover (by AprilSkies).

Thank-you to all who contributed to this.

Not unlike a Pakistani ghazal, I've taken great care to compose the album by putting the songs in harmonious order and having them segue into each other.

Note: The audio files are in ogg format because they are small (unlike wav format) and enable gapless playback (unlike mp3 which insert a few milliseconds of silence at the beginning of tracks resulting in a noticeable gap between tracks). The tracks on the CD, once burned, should segue into each other. A CD burning program is included with the download that supports the ogg format.

Happy listening!

Play it in your car and pump up the volume! Pretend its the 90's and listen to it on your potable CD player while jogging! Or simply enjoy (on a continuous loop) while whittling away the hours working on a game!
