I don't know if there's been such topic in the past here, but can you guys (rock fans) please name the song which you consider to be the greatest rock song ever.
I've seen tons of different polls and they all tell me the different story, plus I've been fighting with my friends for ages about this subject.
I, personally think it's "Telegraph Road (live version)" by Dire Straits. I think neither Hendrix nor Page could outmatch Knopfler's solo play in that particular song (after the "like a rollin river" part).
Whole Lotta Love by Led Zepplin is in the top of my list... But there's too many to choose.
If I had to pick one song to sum up the fundamental concept of rock music to someone who'd never heard any, I'd probably have to say Motorhead's Ace Of Spades.
If I could somehow logically justify saying that Search And Destroy and Gimme Danger (first two tracks on the Stooges' Raw Power album) were in fact one big song, then I'd pick that one. But I can't.
(They Long to be ) Close to You - The Carpenters
ANYthing by Jay-Z ... hands down.
Yeah, hard to say what is the "best", as there's such a huge selection, and depends on a person's musical tastes and even the mood you might be in at the time.
But I thought this topic was interesting as it reminded me of a recent news-article in which it's suggested that Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" song is now named "The greatest song of all time": http://edition.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Music/06/27/dylan.stone/index.html
Though it's a good song, I don't know if I'd call it "The Greatest"...
Spacehog's "Mungo City"
Hells Bells - AC/DC
Bt
God Gave Roll and Roll To You - Kiss ^_^
But yeah, there are too many to name and it's impossible to say which is best. Innuendo or The Show Must Go On by Queen are phenominal as well...
I prefer Bill and Ted's version of God Gave Rock And Roll To You... With the Evil Robot Uses on maracas
STATION!
That's great too! I still think Kiss just nail it on the head though :) I'm listening to it right now and... well, I've changed my mind. It is without a doubt the greatest rock song ever.

Dude, no way. Wyld Stallyns totally rocked that song hardcore!
/me air guitars!
I think you guys are simply remembering the movie too fondly. I bet some of you haven't even heard the Kiss version properly. It is rocked as much as one can possible rock a song.
I might point out also that both versions are hideously similar. There's not a lot of difference. In fact, didn't the WS version fade into the Kiss version? I could be remembering wrong. It's not like Bill and Ted sung the thing :P
Hmm, that's a three-way tie between "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Crocodile Rock" and "Layla".
~~Bernie
hey guys! know which version of god gave rock n roll i like?
the KISS version
no wait the Bill and Ted version
no wait the KISS version
no wait theARRRG I CAN'T DECIDE
if only they were the same song!
oh wait Bill and Ted are KISS in disguise
They're more than meets the eye.
BAM! Thanks DG ^_^ I was -sure- it was the Kiss version but I didn't wanna make an assout of myself by assuming.
The difference is that the movie does have all sorts of sound effects and whatnot over the song. Which ruin the full listening experience!
For me it's Bohemian Rapsody by the Queen, or a Day in the life, by the Beatles.
Fraggle Rock intro sound is cool too.
I read somewhere that there had been a voting made by some British newspaper or other. Bohemian Rhapsody won, hands down. But I disremember whether it was best ROCK song ever, or just best SONG ever...
And, Farlander? In the midst of the horrid Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band film soundtrack, some things are pretty nice. Barry Gibb's cover of "A Day in the Life" is one. Just thought I«d mention it, you might enjoy listening to that one, too. It's funny how in some songs, like Nowhere Man, the song seemed to fit their style perfectly.
EDIT - Oh, I forgot to tell which I thought was the best. The Cranberries' "Electric Blue".
I have a hard time trying to narrow it down like this.. because most of the things would probably be classified as Jazz..
Best ROCK songs(In no particular order)
Frank Zappa-Black Napkins
Bob Dylan-Hurricane
Frank Zappa-Muffin Man(The Bongo Fury version)
Joe Walsh-Funk #49
Joe Walsh-Eyes of the Confessor
Steely Dan-Bodhisattva
Golden Earring-Mad Love's Comin'
Led Zepellin-In my Time of Dying
Budgie-Napolean Bona Parts 1&2 (Along with the entire Impeckable album)
Allman Brothers-You can't Lose what you Never Had
By the way, Argent's version of God Gave Rock n' Roll to you is the best.....
Well, in my opinion, the best rock song ever is
Bill Haley And The Comets - Rock Around The Clock
:=
Man, that song is just so great!
-Eigen
I am going with:
Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
There are hundreds of types of rock, with millions of songs for each. This thread is pretty pointless in my opinion. It's basicly a "post your favorite song and bash other peoples music!" thread.
That's exactly what this thread is not supposed to be. Why did you have mention that anyway? ???
Deep Purple - Child in Time
Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
Uriah heep - July Morning
Dire Straits - Tunnel of Love
Styx - Come Sail Away
Aerosmith - Crazy
Eagles - Hotel California
Queen - Innuendo, Bohemian Rhapsody, Bijou, The show must go on
Ahem.
MC5 - "Kick out the Jams", obviously.
But I'd rather not choose at all, really... There are too many good rock songs out there in as Evil pointed out, too many different styles subgenres.
SOAD - Jhonny ;)
Teh Monkey Island Rock Remix (http://www.scummbar.com/mi2/MI1-CD/25%20-%20Monkey%20Island%20-%20Rock%20Remix.mp3)! :=
I can't really choose one rock song. My favourite songs / bands change every day. Right now it's probably Where Moth And Rust Destroy by Tourniquet (even though that's not really rock, it's thrash metal). I expect this to change in a week the most
Blink 182 rules! Anything by them would just have to be the best rock song. Or Sum 41.
Silly Darth, it's clearly Avril Lavigne - Sk8er B0i
Leave it to the moderators to let a serious discussion turn silly.
There are no words to describe the awesomeness of this song: Sad Exchange - Finger Eleven
Picking the greatest rock song of all time is like.... picking the greenest blade of grass!!! Ã, I mean, like others mentioned... there are so many genres of rock music, which has been shown by many of the choices on here.... we go from things like classic Zepplin, to be bop style like Crocodile Rock, to pop rock with Blink 182.... I suppose you would first have to define rock. Ã, Do you define rock by the people who are doing it now? Ã, Or do you define rock by who is thought to be the creator of rock... Chuck Berry. Ã, Rock has spanned decades and has changed so much over the years, that for me it is virtually impossible to pick the best.
That being said, I'm very surprised that Pink Floyd has not been mentioned in this thread! Ã, Anyway, here are some of my favorites. Ã, Now, some of these my not be the best songs of all time, just ones that I love.
Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry
Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Mr. Brownstone - Guns n Roses
Shook me all night long - acdc
Paradise by the Dashboard Lights - Meatloaf
If I close my eyes forever - Ozzy and Lita Ford
Ironic - Alanis
Bon Jovi - It's my Life
Bad Moon Rising - CCR
Old Time Rock and Roll - Bob Seger
I could go on forever. Ã, But you see what I mean... all of these are considered rock, but they are all so different. Ã,Â
And hey... cut Avril some slack. Ã, Yeah, Sk8er Boi was weak, but you have to admit that the girl's got some talent. Ã, She actually writes some pretty powerful stuff. Ã, I think that she has the potential to be a lot more than a teeny bopper pop singer.
QuoteBest ROCK song ever!
There is no such thing. Like Potch said, there are too many great rock bands and even more great songs.
But a rock song I'm stuck on at the moment:
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
Quote from: jetxl on Wed 29/06/2005 15:23:25Leave it to the moderators to let a serious discussion turn silly.
Serious Discussion? I think it's a pointless post (no offense) and hardly serious.
As a few have pointed out, there's WAY too much rock to accurately judge which is the best.
Ask 50 different people you'll get 50 different answers.
Youngsters of today probably think bands like Blink 182
are rockers ... when older folk like myself consider them cut'n'paste drivel spooging hacked up wannabes.
Perhaps next we can have a serious discussion about which color truely is the best?!?! ;)
I don't think the discussion is pointless. Although it's impossible to discern the best rock song, it's still fun to talk about our favorites!

Ironically, Avril Lavigne and the lead singer of Sum 41 are getting married. It was just announced.
I just listened "Money for Nothing" album all over again and I' would agree with Vel that Tunnel of Love is also among best rock-songs. I almost went nuts because of the joy I experienced listening to final solo.
Okay, fine "Dogs" by Pink Floyd.
IN FACT, the entire "Animals" album.
Bt
Anyone forgetting about Wipeout
But personally Stockholm Syndrome by Muse ;D
Best rock song?
Perhaps Aerosmith - Jaded
or Audoslave - Like a stone
I am truly lame :=
Personally I'd pick "The Wall" above any other Pink Floyd album.
It was the first one I ever heard :D

Did I say that? No I did not! I finished downloading the full Where Moth And Rust Destroy album off limewire (it's not that I didn't look for it at music stores, I did - if I ever find it I'll buy it, it's too awesome to be pirated) and I must say this is the best thing I've ever heard. I can't pick a favourite song, the whole album rocks. Sounds a kinda like Metallica, only a few thousand times better.
pink floyd - echoes, dogs
Well I don't think there actualy is a BEST rock song. It's realy relative. I can like one thing and a nother person might like another. But if I had to choose it would be one of these:
led zeppelin- whole lot of love. imigrant song, stairway to heaven
queen- innuendo, bijou, bohemian rhapsody
Weird Al's Smells Like Nirvana!
"It's hard to bargle nardle zouss
with all these marbles in my mouth."
...Parodies count, right?
But of course the original is much better, Bluke!
On second thought, I do enjoy the bands Journey, Styx, and Aerosmith. Nirvana is so-so. I couldn't understand most of their lyrics anyway.
I don't think Smells Like Teen Spirit's success had any basis in it's lyrics.
Despite their deeply meaningful and meaning laden nature....
I'm not a big Nirvana fan but some of their songs really are just legendary for me, and Smells Like Teen Spirit always makes me sit up and listen (to the music that is, the lyrics are jibberish).
Aerosmith's "Nine Lives"... man, I love that song.
Oasis â€" Rock 'n' Roll Star
especially live, just amazing, it's the quintessence of all great Rock 'n' Roll bands of the last 30 years â€" Stones, Who, Sex Pistols â€" all melted in one furious youth anthem.
All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix (originally a Dylan song), closely rivaled by Frank Marino's version of the same song. One of the best songs ever written!
Stones- Sympathy for the Devil.
Slipknot - pulse of the maggots
SOAD - BYOB
Secret agent man
errr............ Interpol - evil
Close to the Edge by Yes is THE best! :=
The Musical Box - Genesis (I'm a sucker for Prog Rock)
Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John
We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
The whole "Bat Out of Hell" album - Meatloaf
That's All - Genesis
Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) - Elton John
While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Beatles
Crocodile Rock - Elton John
March of the Black Queen - Queen
I'm In Love With My Car - Queen
I just realised most the other songs I love aren't exactly classifiable as 'rockers' per se.
~~Bernie
- Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" seems to be the most classical rock song.
- "Purple Haze" as well.
- Maybe hmm... Bob Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door", which's played on a hundred other ways?
- "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf (a piece from the "Easy Rider" soundtrack).
- "Bad to the Bone", George Thorogood & The Destroyers...
HIM "Buried alive by love"

I'm very late with my response, but I've just discovered this topic. This is one of the greatest things ever written on these forums. I absolutely totally completely LOVE Telegraph Road (both versions), it's my favorite song ever (not to mention that Dire Straits are my favorite band and Knopfler my favorite guitar player) and it really makes you wonder why the heck they never tried that kind of progressive music again.
Another gem is the live version of Sultans of Swing (from Alchemy live album) with its extended solo at the end.
Awww harvester, from YOU I was expecting some Uriah heep too!
Some more additions:
Dire straits - Your latest trick
Styx - Come sail away
Andrew Lloyd Webber - Heaven on their minds, Gethsemane, Superstar(All from Jesus Christ Superstar)
Don't worry, Vel, Uriah Heep coming soon, when we talk about progressive rock!
Oh. My. God. I just got Ken Hensley's last album and I must say its magnifficent!
A definite addition to my list:
Ken Hensley - The last dance
King Crimson - Epitaph... it...just...IS
I like "Starless" by King Crimson.
Velvet Underground - Heroin
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to heaven
The Doors - Break on through
Hüsker Dü - Don't wanna know if you are lonely
Things that can only be called "rock".
Oomph! - Augen Auf
Rammstein - Feuer Frei
Megaherz - Dein Herz Schlaegt
All tied. I don't expect anyone to know these bands unless they are german. In my case german/canadian.
Yeah, who's heard of these "Rammstein" whippersnappers?
..gnah. i won't say anything about that bands, i don't want to start a flamewar.
and ignoring the fact that there is no BEST ROCK SONG EVAR!!:
Oasis - Gas Panic!
Babyshambles - Fuck Forever
Tomte - Korn & Sprite
an oasis-parody, kinda.. "i'm feeling supersonic, give me gin and tonic"
Tocotronic - Ich habe Stimmen gehoert
best new song from tocotronic. i won't list the old great and maybe even better ones
Slut - Why Pourquoi? (I think i like you)
The Doors - Alabama Song / Whiskey Bar (alabama song)
Interpol - Slow Hands
Kante - Best of Both Worlds
Die Sterne - Fickt das System
this could change any second. but tocotronic, kante, die sterne and tomte will always be in my list. always.

Just recently discovered there is one song I just want to hear again and again, and my body can't stand still while hearing it. It has rythm, melody, makes incredibly fun and doesn't get out of your head. Plus, you want to yell the chorus, too!! Could jump aorund the whole time while I'm hearing it.
Well, I speak of Enfilade by At The Drive-In. With Iggy Pop blackmailer at the beginning. Whoa, want to hear it again!! :D
Kinda wish the band would still exist, though I didn't know them when they still were around, otherwise we wouldn't have the opportunity then to listen to the godmade music of The Mars Volta.
Also there is Sparta, the other band which resulted from the split, they are pretty nice, but sadly not that amazing.
Hello mother Leopard. I have your cub.
Yes, Enfilade is quite nice.
I prefer Cosmonaut though. :D
And Sparta... not nice. Horrible. :(

I just assumed....I only know two songs from them, not an entire album.
The band members are actually very nostalgic about their past, they wish the old times back. It's not hard to guess that they aren't pleased themselves with what they are doing.
Probably the creative counterpart that Rodriguez and Bixler were is missing now.
Sparta = Crappa.
Amusingly though, they supported Blink 182 on tour here.
Level 1 of DOOM
Hammerfall - At The End of The Rainbow! 8)
Guns 'n' Roses- Sweet Child o' Mine
Nirvana- Smells like Teen Spirit
Led Zepplin- Stairway to Heaven
I mostly listen to punk so here are a few honourable mentions:-
- Blink 182
- Green Day
- The Offspring
- Bowling for Soup
- New Found Glory
Bigmac ;D
Deep Purple - Lazy
Guns 'n Roses - Nightrain
AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Suppose that's it... For me.
Rock on!!!
Rammstein - Feuer Frei
I do believe that song was in the film XXX!
Yes I've heard of them!
I listen to a few German artists too, actually:
The Robocop Kraus
T. Raumschmiere
And one
(I'm expecting the German's on here to go "Who??") :)
But anyway my fave rock song.... geeze....
Stripped by Jesus Jones! It got me into heavy music in the first place! (No, it wasn't a single, yes, it was heavy)
OMFG WHO ARE THE ROBOCOP KRAUS YOU NEED TO TELL ME MORE!
;)
/me shouts "fake boys, fake girls, clench your fists"
but still.. tocotronic >> everything else. just take a look at my last.fm profile, linked in my signature.
Most things by Nirvana are freakin good.
Metallica is good as well.
Who are the Robocop Kraus?
Here is a link to one of their songs (it will go straight to the song)

thanks manicmatt but uh.. i wasn't too serious :P

and i've seen them live at various locations this summer. make sure to see them in the smallest club you can find or it'll be kinda boring ;)

Depends. Really early blink-182 is punk. :P

I would say they're more punk-rock than punk. At least Green Day is.
But, best rock song is:
Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven. ;D
Wont get fooled again -- The Who
Carry On My Wayward Son -- Kansas
Imagine -- Lennon
Monster -- Steppenwolf
Highway to Hell -- AC/DC
All Around The World -- Oasis
Across The Sea -- Weezer
What'd I Say -- Ray Charles
ect.
I couldn't say. Almost all the bands I like are a mix of like 10 genres... rock included. But you might not classify them as a rock. (Who really knows what they are?)
"Assassins," by Lightning Bolt.
(seriously, acquire this song. it's excellent.)
Free bird by Lynard SkynardÃ, Ã, Ã, YEAHHH!!!!Ã, :=
(and that has nothing to do with it being on the GTA: San Andreas soundtrack. I liked it before then. ;D )
All Along The Watchtower By Jimi Hendrix, what a show he gave.
Fuck the Shit (http://www.break.com/index/fucktheshit.html)
It's just so awesome!
Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones.
shit that fuck, fuck this shit:
Jesus Jones - international bright young thing
(My fave song of all time, and even if you don't like it, or can;t remember it, respect it on my behalf for it was the first song for me to really get into and buy an album, at just eight years old!)
(And on that album, was a heavy song called "stripped" that in turn got me into metal and rock!)
Best Rock-song ever? Some glittering bands are obviously missing in this list:
How about:
Bon Jovi - Raise your hands (As heard in SPACEBALLS)
Alice Cooper - Dirty Dreams
Poison - Unskinny Bop
Firehouse - Get In Touch
Mötley Crüe - Kickstart My Heart
Winger - No Man's Land
Slaughter - Spend My Life
I'm all out of breath ... gotta stop. So many cool songs out there ... ;D
WITHOUT A DOUBT IN MY MIND
Tribute by Tenacious D
Best humor AND funkiest and partly that's because the humor and funk support each other
funk is humor and humor is funk afterall
:P:P:P:P:P
Best rock songs ever?
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Master of Puppets - Metallica
High Enough - Damn Yankees
Here I Go Again - Whitesnake
You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC

Dont Stop Believing - Journey
ACDC: Shot down in flames and TNT!

Yay!Ã, Someone recognizes it!Ã, (And I know perfectly well what it's about, but that won't stop me from posting it, for it is one of the greatest rock songs ever IMO)
No, seriously, I don't know what the song is about!
I love that song to but when you know thats it has no obvius meaning i kinda lose the whole "BEST SONG EVA!' additude, stilllllll THAT SONG KICKS MEGA SUPER DUPER DONKEY d**k
I never liked the song too terribly much before, but after having gone to the Renaissance Faire and seen the group Tartanic play it with bagpipes and other traditional Scottish instruments, my new favorite rock song is Inagadadavida.
Almost any Radiohead is awesome, particularly tracks from the albums OK Computer, Kid A, and The Bends such as:
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Radiohead - Idioteque
Radiohead - Creep
Radiohead - The Bends
I also like:
Eagles - like Hotel California
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
The Butterfly Effect - One Second of Insanity (not a huge band, but very much worth checking out)
That's all I can think of right now.
(Check out my last.fm to see some other songs that I listen to. (http://www.last.fm/user/mozza_26/))
Allright, here goes my list of songs that I love currently and thus would consider good songs (they are almost all rock/progressive/metal).

Mozza Butterfly Effect come from Australia, see them all the time back in Australia.

Raally other kind of music, but also worth a try...
*hijacks the thread*
What's your fave paradise lost album? And what did you think of their last album, the self titled one?
My fave album would be "Symbol of life"
That's the right title name right? Well you know which one I mean surely..
Sure, i now what you are talking about!!!!
And my favourite album is the same as yours!! ;D
And i especially like all the balldas....
However, i have headbanged a lot during the gig...
ballads? symbol of life? ugh
In my opinion, Paradise Lost were excellent in the Lost Paradise LP. The Frozen Illusion demo was good too.
What ballads, anyway?
Helm, have you heard this album symbol of life? It's got some great riffs in it and full of energy!

Here is a link for anyone who wants to hear them.
Yes, yes sadly I've heart to all the material Lost have put out so far. Which is why I stand by what I sad that only the first album is actually awesome. Gothic is ok, not terrible, has a few good tracks, and from then and onwards... ugh
That's okay then. Your entitled to your opinion!

So...this is your opinion..
Mine is contrary to yours.
I did not like the first album with all the Gothic songs, but Paradise Lost were getting better and better with the time..
And "Ballads"...ok,,I meant the melodic titles....
Actually nothing they ever did would classify as gothic rock... they just named their second album 'Gothic'. Paradise Lost were one of the first romantic doom, or doom/death bands around, followed closely by early Anathema and early My Dying Bride.
Lost went from this style to a generic mid-tempo atmospheric metal deal up to Icon, and from there to Draconian Times they streamlined even more, eventually losing the guitars for 'Host' which was in my opinion a fine album, one of their better, and then after facing fan backlash for not being 'metal' anymore, they returned to using heavy guitars on these awful Believe in Nothing and Symbol of Life albums. I haven't heard the newest, 'Paradise Lost' yet, but I don't think I'm missing out on anything...
Yer what? Didn't all the press claim Paradise Lost as the founders of goth metal? (Or at least the first to get press attention anyway) Yeah I thought they were more doom back then too though.
"Host" funnily enough was the first paradise lost album I got, being a fan of electronic music. My older brother on the other hand has been into them forever.
Believe in nothing was a very average album, and my bro doesn't like it except one or two songs, but "Symbol of life" is great! Their latest ditched all the synths and in some songs it's (so im told) their heaviest music ever. (I aint got the older material)
I'll just go listen to Future Breed Machine by Meshuggah, ruthless Swedish Viking music :P

Please more information!!!!!!
Meshuggah are a post-thrash metal industrial-tinged band from Sweden. They're universally considered unique and a very able "musician's musician" kind of band. I prefer their older material, specifically None and Contradictions Collapse, while a lot of people prefer later material like Chaosphere or Nothing. If you like a degree of musical variation, go with the former stuff, if you like very mechanical repetition of the same riff while the drummer does interesting polyrhythms underneath, go with the latter.

Thanks Helm for the information!
I'm going to give it a try!
Hi Helm.
I've been to the CD store today, but no CD of
Meshuggah available:-(
Instead i have bougth "Birds of Pray" of Live....
And this is worth a try!!!
My recommendation!!
And...
once again
I'm looking forward to the Staind Gig in April...
I'm sure this will be great.... ;D
If you listen to Staind and Live, I doubt Meshuggah will be of much interest to you.
I liked the Destroy Erase Improve stuff best, especially Inside what's within behind. Their live show is good also (I think I saw them this summer, could have been the previous though).

But you have me curious now ;)
I wil give it a try soon.
I'll never figure out what's so good about Meshuggah. I haven't heard their older stuff, but I heard a few songs on internet radio stations and they are boring with fake growls. Some songs are nice though.
Lately I've been obsessed with Theocracy, any song by them rules. It's melodic metal with amazing vocals. The first album is written, recorded and mixed my one person alone in his house, yet it sounds so good.
Theocracy???
Melodic Metal...
This must be some stuff I have missed so far!!!!
I really love melodic metal!!!!
Thanks for the info ;D ;D ;D
Guybrush,
I hope this will not gonna be Monkey Island 23 (although I would like this, haha)
Did not find any hints about Theocracy....
But melodic metal makes mr me crazy.........!!!!
Please more info!!!
Sugar with honey on it.....
I get bored of Meshuggah quite easily these days, Tomas Haake the drummer is one of the best in the world. His coordination is something that is unique and a lot of players can't beat him. Except for the top players like Terry Bozzio, Virgil Donati, etc.

hi guybrush,
thank you so much for the info!
I have listened to theoracy, but i did not like it too much...
And Majestic Vanguard...oh..no....
But thank you for the info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But today an old friend visited me and he brought something I love;.)))
He knows what I like....
It was Griming Souls by Cutting Crew...
Still listening to it!!!
But... You can't like melodic power metal and not like Theocracy... That's an oxymoron. What could make it better is long solo parts, but even without them it's still awesome. I expect the second album to be even better.
I like power metal and I think Theocracy are ridiculous.
Radiant: interesting choice by Marillion. I'd go with the whole of Misplaced Childhood, personally.

Ok, I did not like them too much either, but they are not
ridiculous.
But the good news: My very best old friend of mine has got a CD by Meshuggah!
Has told me something of Cover 33 or something on the phone...
He will again visit me this evening and I will soon know what you are talking about ;D
I am curious!

Sometimes one has to listen a few times to the sounds...
I will do it again!!!!
Petra
But....
I've got a large variety of music I love..
From Metal to Love Songs, lol
Perhaps you should not take me too serious...
I've been to the Bryan Adams gig in Cologne and it was awesome!
And I've been to Ausioslave and I enjoyed it so much...
And we sang "Holy Night" during the Runrig Christmas concert...
And the next will be Staind...
So...the next after the next Theocracy or Meshuggah....
And I have often experienced the guys beeing much better "live" than on CD
We will see
Ok,
my friend Wolfgang is here...
With the Meshuggah Cd...
And Helm, I must admit, you were right...
Nothing for me! :(
We have switched to Dare...
A chance to talk a bit....Even with music in the background
But it was worth a try!!!!
And now he has left to meet his girlfriend...
But this is the fate of a divorced 45 "old" woman, lol
But he left me something exciting...
Placebo...
Let's see of this fits to my mood today
Ok....
he knows me about 12 years now...
But...... I can only send a recommendation...
The "Meds" Album by Placebo...

No... I guess Fish is back on board? I don't think I care for reunion tours.

Not a reunion, Fish happens to hold copyright to the songs he wrote (that means, just about all of them) so he's performing them.
As important as I consider Fish, Marillion is also Stever Rothery and everybody else. I don't want to hear some other guitarist play the leads in Blind Curve or Kayleigh. Also, Fish is in another place, it's not honest to try to speak from the point of view of Misplaced. It's been 20 years.
A shame all-around
That is true, but for the lack of a time machine, I'll take it.
I really do not want to "doublepost " once again in my life..

I respect that you don't like them, but why ridiculous? It's far from ridiculous. The first (and only, so far) album is full of emotion and was all written, performed, recorded, mixed by one person alone, and while this does not guarantee quality it shows a lot of talent and devotion. You don't like the lyrics either, apparently, seeing how they're christian and all, but putting the message aside, the lyrics are poetry (unlike stereotypical Christrian stuff).
Anyway, Petra - nobody told you to quit, just not post excessively as if this is your own forums. I suggest you get a members account where you can edit your existing posts.

It is my pleasure to enlighten you sir, though you were not the target of my generous offer of divine knowledge. Petra was the target, because my pirate insticts told me there's a possibility he might not have known that fact.
And I really have nothing better to do other than paying attention to what Helm says about the music I listen to.
Rock = The Hellacopters.
Petra: Ok.
Guybrush, I find them ridiculous as I find most third wave power metal bands that ape bands-that-aped-prime-helloween. They do not stand out in any way for me, from that sort of sorry lot. Very derivative, not convincing. The music is boring too. What can I say? The big issue is, I know this music very well for the Sonata Arcticas and the Theocracys to have any effect on me. When you've heard and enjoyed the types of Jag Panzer's "Ample Destruction", Omen's "Battlecry" or Warlord's "The Cannons of Destruction Have Begun" for the bigger part of your youth, the later sort of derivative stuff doesn't appeal much. I haven't heard a decent modern power metal band since Nevermore entertained the style back in Politics of Ecstasy.
I don't mind the christian message at all. Two of my favourite bands are Savior Machine and Candlemass (from Nightfall and onwards they're positively white) and I do enjoy a lot of white power (haha, oops!) metal bands you wouldn't know like Veni Domine, Seventh Avenue or even prime Stryper. If people believe fervently in something, usually that sort of conviction captures me, be it belief in gods or devils or whatnot.
And yes, of course this is all my opinion, I don't claim to objectively be able to determine what is ridiculous and what is not. I am neither evil, nor a genius, and would appreciate it if ManicMatt would put a lid on it.
Of course I know Veni Domine, Stryper and Seventh Avenue ;D. I don't know a lot of bands though, and I don't know anyone where I live who listens to any metal other than Metallica, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, etc. My only source of good music is people I know online.
I heard some Jag Panzer before, they're good but never was much into them. My tastes changed since then, so I'll give them another chance. If you could recommend an album, what would it be? I guess I'll include them in my list next time I order music cds.
You won't find Ample Destruction on CD. And the vinyl pressing is insanely hard to find and costy. Ebay might help, but I can only say good luck. A good Jag Panzer cd is 'The Fourth Judgement', probably their best, really.
Find and buy Heir Apparent - Graceful Inheritance if you can. And Manilla Road's The Deluge.
Catch 33 is a pretty below-average album to begin with. I can't believe Meshuggah won a grammy for that album. Its saying something about the grammy's though .. lol
Mew is a cool band, not only because they are good but also in terms of atmosphare, it's 80ies, synthie pop, but not cheesy. Okay, I only know one song from them, but it is really hard to get it out of your head, as long you got accustomed to the strange rythm...."special"...
I have both Mew albums, and I wouldn't describe them as synth pop or eighties style! But atmospheric, oh yes.
Had to butt in there because I felt your description was mis-leading.
Both albums are great Ozzie, and they both have different sounds to them too!
"Both"?
Mew has released four albums...
What?? How did I miss that???
Wait a minute.. how come the official Mew site doesn't mention them?
*Researches a bit more*
Woah! I'll be darned! There ARE two older albums! Why have Mew kept this quiet? Very strange.
EDIT: And do you have any idea of where I could get them imported from?
if i want to know what albums a band's released i ALWAYS use wikipedia. i usually find it more useful than band's official site (namely radiohead.com, which i visit frequently since the dead air space addition)
Huuu???
I never wanted to join this forum again..., but now I must ;D
The discussion about Mew is taking place...
I can recommend the gig in Cologne / Germany on May 1st!!!

How about Porcupine Tree, the whole In Absentia album is great. Awesome drumming by Gavin Harrison too. I especially love the track "Sound of Muzak" :P

Because there are better songs out there than "Aerials"? That's songs okay I suppose..
I like the album it's off, but the last two SOAD albums had too many silly squeaky vocals in it for my liking. (IE the guy that was formally just backing vocals and bass/guitar/whatever.)
System of a Down are not that bad musically, I used to be a huge fan... Not anymore though. The fact that they're big hypocrites is one of the reasons I stopped listening to them, they keep preaching about the System but it's the System that made them rich :=. I think Chop Suey and Spiders are their best songs.
There's tons of better music out there. The band that got my attention off Soad was Disciple - their new stuff is awful, the older stuff rules. I doubt anyone here knows about that band though. Does anyone here know it?

hah, well fluke, write a livejournal entry about how nobody understands you or something
Guybrush, do you listen to anything that isn't christian? xDisciplex for christ's sake? I didn't think we had many greek christian metalheads. Next you'll tell me you listen to Vomitorial Corpulence or something. At least listen to Discipline offshot band Shockwave. They sing about transformers.
Not xDisciplex, that's a different band and I think it got renamed to something new now. I was talking about Disciple, without the "x". I don't listen to them frequently anymore, they're hard rock but their new stuff sounds commercial rock and lost that special vibe they had.
And I do listen to not christian stuff. I don't listen to straight satanic stuff, but I'm totall fine with not christian stuff - I even had arguments with "secular music is bad for you" kind of people. The reason I know more christian bands is that my main people source of music information are christian.
I have Nightwish and Epica but I think I'm over that kind of music. I also have Iced Earth, Pantera, some older stuff (Deep Purple, Scorpions, etc) and a few more. Also, have Blind Guardian, their album Nightfall in Middle Earth is my favourite album I've ever heard but I don't like their other stuff much.
I heard Vomitorial Corpulence before and I have to say that my farts sound better than them.

You have such musical farts that it's already been sampled and put into a song released by McFly.
Hmmm do i listen to any christian bands I wonder? Lets see.. ah yes P.O.D. Payable on death I think. Yes.. I like about half of that album of theirs that I have. Satelliete.
I guess maybe Dark Star may be christian. They did a song that goes "Jesus was my age, when he got nailed..." um there you go!
But Jesus Jones aint a christian rock band, despite their name.
The White Stripes - Ball and Biscuit
anything on the siamese dream album by the smashing pumpkins, that's one good album.
Jimmy Chamberlin is an insane drummer, definetly have to love his chops. To me thats what made me listen to Smashing Pumpkins back when I was a teenager. Jimmy Chamberlin is now doing hybrid fusion/rock album called the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex. Really nice stuff!

Hi guys,
just wanted to tell you my impression....
Just returned from the Staind gig in Cologne...
The "warm-up" band was Mad Doggin, never heard of them so far...the drummer was excellent, but I did not like the texts about -suicide-killing- etc...A bit too heavy for me...
But as an old Staind fan..I do not need to tell you
about the main act..
It was just excellent!!!
Just simply this "melodic" metal I like..and also the ballads were amazing!
Hope the guys will come back to Germany very soon.
"But as an old Staind fan..I do not need to tell you"
*Waits for Helm to say something about that*
Hehe sorry couldn't help myself! ;D
ok....
doesn't matter...
The tastes are different....
Best Rock Song?
Do I need to answer that?
The BEST rock song EVER is SO obviously:
"Let the reason be love" by Boyzone.
I thought they said marijuana would do my brain good. Oh well..
SING ALONG EVERYBODY!
DONT LOVE ME FOR FUNNN, GURLLLLLL,
LEMME BE THE ONE, GURRRRLLLLL,
LOVE ME FOR A REASON:
LET THE REASON BE LUUUVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV..
It brings tears to my eyes.. :'(
Don't blame marijuana for your poor taste in music.
You do realize I was trying to be funny? Wait, WAIT! I wasn't trying to be funny after all. I was just deciphering the bourgeois esoteric thoughts that roam in each dented pride of the lone unbreeding soul.
I'll blame marijuana again for the last sentence. That's one thing I learned in school. If you can't do something, then BLAME, BLAME AND BLAME HAPPILY EVER AFTER.
Please reconsider posting if that is the absolute height of prospective amusement we are to enjoy from your future posts.

I myself prefer their earlier works. They'd become so *commercial* by that point, that it interfered with their music. Another less well known Rock band with some excellent songs would be Westlife.
If you are not too intimidated by non-english rock, Awaz is a Pakistani band with some excellent soft-core blue punk-acid rock.

Soundgarden's cool too.
and i know that qualifies as rock.
Limp Bizkit - "Behind Blue Eyes." Best song Fred Durst ever wrote and he's my hero.
I hope you're kidding, but it's hard to tell on the interweb.
You DO know "Behind Blue Eyes" is a "The Who" song right?

I do remember seeing Les Claypool dressing up as a rooster and jumping around the stage during that same song at an Alice in Chains gig .. quite amusing

They do if you don't have much frame for reference. If you listen to Gorguts and Beatles only, you'll eventually settle to 'both bands use guitars' as their similarity.

But yeah I'll agree to Alice in chains being good. Didn't the singer die many years ago? Please remind me.

Some of my favourite "Rock" songs (in no particular order):
"Dominion" - The Sisters of Mercy
"Burning Down The House" - Talking Heads
"Tales Of Brave Ulysses" - Cream
"Disappointed" - P.I.L
"Personal Jesus" - Depche Mode
"Sea Of Joy" - Blind Faith
"The Man Who Never Was" - Skid Row (the original, irish band. Not the poodle rockers :P)
"Derag Doom" - Horslips.
...
And others. :P
Good taste, that man! or fish...
a few of my favourites:
"Only Shallow" - My Bloody Valentine (personal fave Irish band :))
"Cannonball" - The Breeders
"Safari" - The Breeders (again)
"Seether" - Veruca Salt
"I Feel You" - Depeche Mode
"Falling Away" - The Like
"Love in a Trashcan" - The Raveonettes
"Murdermile" - The Kills
"Leave them All Behind" - Ride
"Sad and Lonely" - Secret Machines
"Agenda Suicide" - The Faint
(EDIT: I can't BELIEVE I forgot this next one, it's probably my all-time favourite song)
and
"Baby You Should Know" - Joy Zipper
And a couple hundred more absolute classics, but we'll stop there. It's not so much a problem of what's a truly great tune, more a case of how to narrow it down.
The Faint rock.
And I love Joyzipper. (And Tabitha is really nice, she tries her best to write back to her fans)
Hi there all together,
after a long time I'm back again.....
(was afraid of Helm :o)
No, just kidding! This guy may be a bit too directly sometimes, but he knows what he is talking about!
So.....has anyone seen the Eurovision song contest on Saturday?
I was so glad, that the best song of the evening won ;D
And now I'm listening to Lordi's Album "The Monsterican Dream". This is really rock! Just great stuff!
Hey Petra! There's a whole thread just about the Eurovision song contest in the general discussion area, go check it out!
Yes... Helm... When not staring in Rogue Trooper or listening to music that has guitar solo's that go on for ten minutes he likes to scare away potential AGS members!
But he can make me laugh. Ho ho.
Ah, thanks ManicMatt ;D
Will check out the Eurovision song contest discussion.
And Helm is not that bad....
Just a bit directly...
Ok, every one is different. Let him live ;D
I am not that bad. I eat babies, but first I cook them.
you know you can get microwavable babies now?
Pfft.
Powdered Babies are the food of the future.
Hi Helm,
Let's have dinner together tonight ::)
But joke aside....
Your opinion really interests me..
What do you think of Lordi? Do not want to discuss about the Song contest but about their music....
This is great rock, isn't it???

I can't wait to see Helm's opinion on this band again either!
let me see, not only do I think he's going to say they aint great, but he's also going to say they aint rock.
In other news I got Pink Punk's album. It's the lead singer from One Minute Silence (What does Helm and Petra think of them by the way?) doing rap over electronic and experimental-ish music.
Petra, this post (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=26671.msg337832#msg337832) covers my opinion of Lordi.
The only good thing Pink ever did in her life is hire female bassist of Hammers of Misfortune for touring, pay her amazingly well, so in effect bankrolling Hammers and their second AMAZINGLY BRILLIANT album 'The August Engine'.

Wow, it's not often I name a band Helm hasn't heard of. But surely you've heard of One minute silence, if not "pink punk"?
But nice to know Pink contributed something good in the music world!
Sorry, misread. I have no idea who Pink Punk are.
Well if anyone's interested in something a bit different, here's pink punk:

"I go to the store and they have EVERYTHING there, all convienient and redy to make. first, I see pudding powder, mix with water and you get pudding, then I saw orange juce powder, just mix with water and you get orange juce. THEN, I saw BABY powder, and I thought, WHAT A COUNTRY!"
oh ya, back on topic ,one of my fave bands is Linkin Park.
I liked your second joke more! haha!
Linkin Park are boring, but they used to be my first band that I actually started listening :-[ now their kind of music doesn't interest me anymore.
and Manic Matt, that indeed is not metal or good.
www.purevolume.com/saviourmachine, the song American Babylon is stuck to me. The other songs aren't that good and the older stuff was better...
Savior Machine I and II are the only records of theirs I consider worthwhile. But extremely so. The Legend series are just not something I care to follow very closely, although I do like Pale Horse and a few other choice tracks.
Saviour machine sound like a cross between Il Divo and nightwish.
Cheesy!
You need to listen again.
Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
I can't pick one favorite song but here is some of my favorites:
Supertramp - Hide In Your Shell
Supertramp - A Soapbox Opera
The Band - King Harvest
The Band - Stagefright
The Doors - When the Musics Over

I think neither Hendrix nor Page could outmatch Knopfler's solo play in that particular song (after the "like a rollin river" part).
They are all amzing guitarists but I must say I like Robbie Robertson of The Band better than all of them. Ever listened to The Band? Robbie usually keeps his solos pretty short but on Forbidden Fruit he pulls of a long and mind blowing solo.

It sure is a great song but I think one have to have lived in america during the 60's to fully understand the power behind the lyrics. Did you know that there is a full book about this song? I have been thinking about buying it.

I have a hard time trying to narrow it down like this.. because most of the things would probably be classified as Jazz..
Best ROCK songs(In no particular order)
Frank Zappa-Black Napkins
Bob Dylan-Hurricane
Frank Zappa-Muffin Man(The Bongo Fury version)
Joe Walsh-Funk #49
Joe Walsh-Eyes of the Confessor
Steely Dan-Bodhisattva
Golden Earring-Mad Love's Comin'
Led Zepellin-In my Time of Dying
Budgie-Napolean Bona Parts 1&2 (Along with the entire Impeckable album)
Allman Brothers-You can't Lose what you Never Had
By the way, Argent's version of God Gave Rock n' Roll to you is the best.....
Have you ever heard of Dylans version of In my Time of Dying? It is also really good but I think Led Zeppelins version is better though.
Hi Helm,
so glad you did not eat me ;D

"One Lie fits all"

Not my kind of music....
And Pink Punk is not better either, sorry
But.....
anyone ever heard about Blue October?
"Argue with a tree"
So nice---
At least you gave them a shot Petra! Mind you, "one lie fits all" isn't very good, "buy now.. saved later" is. (Which rather annoyingly wasn't on that myspace link)
Got me there. What kind of music is Blue October?
Wow, this has become the Ask Helm thread.
I got re-addicted to The Spirit by Divinefire a couple of hours after my previous post :P. That song is plain awesome, it's like 10 minutes long but not in any way repetitive, with solos and 3 different vocalists. I don't know what genre I'd put it, maybe heavy power metal describes it but it has also a doom metal part.
The only problem is the cheesiness of the lyrics, but besides that it's just perfect... Providing that your ears can bare the heaviness and understand the melody. Also, another problem is that it relies too much on synths, which most metalheads (with me not included) find annoying.
http://media.putfile.com/The-Spirit if anyone wants to hear it.
Guybrush, since you get a boner over jesus, listen to Forsaken - Dominaeon. Some of the best epic doom metal since Candlemass kickstarted the thing, and the lyrics are WHITE AS FUCK. Really awesome 'god is coming, repent sinners for you will SUFFER' type of stuff. Real conviction.
I hate you Helm, I want you to go to hell and SUFFER ;D
Bah, like I said, I don't like the lyrics of that song much. Yeah I enjoy white metal more than secular, but I dislike cheesy and too direct lyrics, it turns me off
I'll check out Forsaken, but if the lyrics are really like that I doubt I'm going to like it much :P
Shut up you're going to love them, and you totally get all sweaty when some metal singer shouts about god. The fact that you just said 'secular' and 'metal' in a row shows where you're coming from. Just admit it. God gives you a boner.
Listen to Forsaken.
Hey it's not my fault if the evil american protestants brainwashed me to split music into christian and secular even though I dislike that distinction :(
I would listen to Forsaken, but I can't seem to find samples anywhere. My google skills have failed me.
Your google skills are crap.
http://www.forsaken.us/flashmain.html
Unless there is more than one band that goes by that name!
I googled "forsaken metal"
listen to exhumed (http://www.exhumed.us/site/mp3s/exhumed_uninformed.mp3). i have to laugh so hard at 1:45.
Are they BURPING in the chorus? Oh it's a growl, my bad.
Why were you laughing at that point in the song? Was that the solo guitar? Thats the only bit I liked!
I'm talking about Forsaken from Malta, not the US band. I'll upload a song for you and then you'll love it so much you'll go and order the actual album.
http://www.locustleaves.com/03-dominaeon.mp3
There are actually at least 8 bands called Forsaken, hehe. I searched for Forsaken Dominaeon but wouldn't find a thing, and that USA band is not epic doom metal...
Anyway, indeed it's quite awesome, thank you :o I'll put it in my "next" list, now that I've been an adult for 2 weeks I'll get my own internet card very soon 8)
Ah, then my apologies Mr Peepwood.
I'll play the song Helm but I've never liked doom metal before..
*Plays the song*
Oh, I was expecting something mega slow. Isn't doom normally very slow? What am I thinking of? I once heard a song by "electric Wizard" I think and it just droned on in mediocrity.
He has one of those eighties Iron Maiden kinda voices, but I'm getting used to it.
Yeah, I can't fault them, but they don't appeal to me, maybe my brother would like them.
Quote from: ManicMatt on Tue 30/05/2006 14:49:42

Please never use "electric wizard" and "mediocrity" in the same sentence again.
Thank you.
(No, I'm kidding, you're entitled to your opinion of course :P but I like EW quite a bit!)
There's all types of doom. Epic Doom Metal (Helm favourite. Started with Candlemass' Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, other followers include Sorcerer, Memory Garden, Solitude Aeturnus. Traditionally speaking, if a band is playing Epic Doom Metal, they're at least very good. This genre doesn't seem to have mediocre bands) and is a bit faster than most stuff, since it's epic and power-metal-ish usually. There's Sabbath and Sabbath-clones going from 'traditional doom' to full-out stoner, a good example of such music being Kyuss, the first few Monster Magnet albums and of course, Sleep - Dopesmoker. Then there's DoomDeath or Romantic Doom with the british brigade of Anathema (first two), My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost (first two) which is quite slow, but with grinding fast passages usually, a lot of bands suffering from the 'slow death metal', syndrome. Then there's Funeral Doom, by the Finns, with Skepticism, Thergothon, Tyranny and the like. This is your 30bpm Doom where there's just a tympani and church organ and a guitar going BZZZZZ. Australians dISEMBOWELMENT are a very important band affiliated with the Funeral scene but not exactly fitting in (their most distinctive thing being ripping blastbeat parts with pretty acoustic guitar strumming, then cutting into SLOW DEATH for 3 minutes, then repeat), along with the mighty Esoteric and Unholy. Then there's Drone Doom, which is just ambient music by metalheads, usually sans drumming completely, like Sunn0))) and Khanate.
Electric Wizard were great on 'Come My Fanatics' in my opinion, only. 'Return Trip' destroyed my mind. I'd say they were still traditional doom, only very heroin-impaired at that stage.
One could do worse than listen to music by any of the bands mentioned in this post, if they feel they're interested in Doom.

it is no metal, but melodic rock, with unconventinal lyrics...

And Helm....
Just read your comment about the different kinds of metal...
Did not understand too much I must admit.
But I understood Anathema ( the special guest on my Porcupine Tree gig last year, this was amazing!)
And of course Paradise Lost ( the main act on my gig last year ;D) And this was just great!!!!
Petra: Blue october sort of remind me of Incubus in a way. the funk. The scratches. I like the intense vocalist.
Oh this next song is utterly different. Ecletic!
Yeah is this enjoyable stuff.
Okay, i found a link with samples of the best album One Minute Silence ever did. It's way more energetic than "one lie fits all". If you don't like that then nevermind!

Give yourself a picture now!
Yeah I know you're a girl, man!

Unholy by Brainstorm
Times and Unknown Waters by Blazing Eternity

Well, I'm sorry you got offended at something that petty. Not meaning to offend anyone, but I'm wondering how you could take a band seriously who think they're monsters and are hardly even metal.
Do you think they won Eurovision because they had great musical talent? No, it was the novelty of them. They were entertaining. Now, I'm not meaning to start a fight here or make enemies, I didn't think you would get offended at a light-hearted comment like that, but obviously you did.
Nah, I'm just tired of hearing that. Because, you know, you're not the only one to say something like that.
Your comment "and are hardly even metal" makes me giggle. Because they dress up as monsters, they have to play (death) metal? They play melodic hard rock as their idols do, Alice Cooper, KISS, Twisted Sister, W.A.S.P... They all had huge shows and masks, but would you classify their music as metal? I wouldn't.
And what if they won the Eurovision compo because of the novelty of them? It's just an Eurovision song contest, nothing more. There are still thousands of fans out there who enjoy the music as well. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to sing along to all of their songs at their gig. I wouldn't listen or buy their albums if I didn't like their music. The characters just add to the the whole thing. Personally I think that when I go see a band, I also want to see something else than just a band playing there on the stage in jeans and t-shirt. All the gimmicks, were they monster suits or whatever, make the whole experience much more interesting for me. But maybe that just me.
This is going way off-topic now. If you wish to discuss this any further, PM me instead of posting here.
EDIT: Just to clarify, I don't hate people who don't like same things as me. I understand that people have different tastes and I'm fine with that. It just beats me why some people make so damn big thing about stuff they dislike.
Have to agree with Petteri..
Lordi play melodic hard rock, otherwise I would not like them.
Forget about about the monster masks..they are just a part of the show which some people might need...but ok..not necessary ...
But for me onlyÃ, the music counts...and Lordi are performing well ;D
And they were the only one who made me turn out the music much louder during the Contest....( have been on my sofa and only listened to the music with my eyes closed...so without getting influenced by some dancers or some show!!! As this was a SONG Contest and not a strip show!!!)
And I also accept all other opinions..good that the music tastes are that different...
However...never play Modern Talking...lol
But I have watched "In Flames" last weekend on TV and promptly ordered the "Reroute to Remain"-album ;D
This is something I never heard.... Awesome!! Metal at it's best :o
That's strange, this seems like a thread I'd dive on.
Anyway, best rock song ever would probs be Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen if you asked a member of the general public.
BUT
To me the best rock song ever is Bob Dylan - Hurricane, only cos its a big "fuck you" to the racist attitudes of America. By making the story of Rubin Carter's sentencing seem ridiculous, it popularised the notion that it was unjust.
Best punk song ever is Holiday in Cambodia or Rock the Casbah. Take your pick.
So to all friends of Celtic rock ???
We have a real good band here in Germany...look here: http://www.gardenofdelight.de/cd.htm
(Pssssttttt, this is another insider hint, lol)
N.W.O. - Ministry
Always a fan of Hot for the Teacher by Van Halen... But then again, I don't listen to music almost at all...
Uhm... yeah.
Hello.
I just saw this topic and I just had to reply!
I believe the greatest rock song of all time is a classic (70s) when rock was just blooming all over the world, yeah, it's LED ZEPPELIN's STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN.
Come on, this IS the greatest ever (and VH1 will agree).
Challenge me if you dare!
I Beg to Differ. In a Rock song you are generally looking for some balls out riff and a baddass solo. you say to yourself thats f*****g rockin'. rock bands do have thier "Ballads" but if i wanted to let someone hear "THE GREATEST ROCK SONG OF ALL TIME", it wouldnt be "stairway..."
What about "T.N.T" and "If you want blood, you got it!" by AC/DC
Mine is "Fairies Wear Boots boots" or "Tommorows dream" by Sabbath
Ok...
That's your opinion and it's valid.
But I think you're looking for "The best hard rock kick arse with blood and gore and nasty long hard solos" topic...

LORDI - HARD ROCK HALLELUJAH!!!!
Well, okay, not quite the greatest - but it is good fun :D

Okay.
Stairway To Heaven is one of THEEEEEE most overrated songs of all time.
Now I'm a huge Zeppelin fan, I even like this song a great deal, but they have had so many songs that are so much better.
People say IV is the best, I'd say II is the best, closely followed by I & Physical Graffitti.
I'd even go as far to say there are songs on IV that are better than Stairway (the first three, for example).
Stairway To Heaven has this legendary status, and I can't really see why. It's up there with Bohemian Rhapsody & Imagine.
As for my favourite song? Well, that's a little too difficult for me to say, I like different music when I'm in different moods. One day I'll be in the mood to listen to "Six Shooter" by Mondo Generator or "The Way Of The Men Of The Stuff" by The Eighties Matchbox B-line Disaster, the next I may prefer to listen to "Aurora" by the Foo Fighters or "Castles Made Of Sand" by Jimi Hendrix. I have a biiiiiig music collection. >_<
Final countdown - Europe
Have to agree with MarkPhantom ;D
I saw LORDI's gig yesterday in Cologne and I'm impressed ;D
Have already watched many concerts but this one was one of the best I have ever seen.
Really great Rock!
And even the supporting band "The Dogma" was really good with their power metal :)
So it was an evening I will remember for a long time.....
Edit: Next gig booked...HammerFall ;D
Hmm, as for "rock"...
Why not Blood Duster? SixSixSixteen is teh greatest... Rock song. Actually it's more like grind'n'roll, but still nice and groovy and stuff. The lyrics maybe not the greatest ones (it's crap, believe me) - but as almost any rock song's lyrics...

I'll challange you. I dare ;D I think Queen is still better than Led zeppelin. honestly I never understood why stairway to heaven would ever be anything special. Or even queens bohemian rhapsody for that matter. Both bands made tons of better songs in my opinion. But I gues that's just me.
BEST 3 ROCK SONGS EVER
queen- One Vision (definetly the very best rocking song ever. It just screams pure rock :D)
gun's and roses- november rain
jerry c- guitar cannon in D

Best rock band ever!
Brian May is a legend
Freddie had a divine voice
Listen to all their early work!
I probably think it's Pink Floyd- Comfortably Numb.
But yes, it's impossible to really say that one single song is the best.
Right now I think it's the best..maybe...
To my mind, Roots from Sepultura (Under A Pale Grey Sky version is so far the best from Max Cavalera).
Best Rock song ever?!
Ok ok ... I can do this ... Ac\Dc, no wait ... Deep Purple... Maiden? Priest? Um... Aerosmith has got a fair few
Ok Ok ... A list .... Yes, a list ... I can't supply only one answer ...
That would be sacrlidge (Thats not how you write that) (I know) (So why did you write it like that)
(I don't know the right way) (What?) (Stop talking to yourself) (Sorry)
No particular order ... I think
Man on the silver mountain (Rainbow)
Hells Bells (AC\DC)
For those about to rock (AC\DC)
Smoke on the water (duh!)
Legacy (The Gone Jackals)
+ a million other
Gadzooks this is tricky.... someone should compile a list of the 20 most mentioned songs and make a poll, so we can decide once and for all the what the greatest rock song of the community's choice is. (That was a weird sentance) (Be quiet I'm not talking to you) (.... *sulk*)
For me its "Until we touch the burning sun" by Thunderstone at the moment, but it changes every day :P
But for those who are interested:
You can find it here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=aFCWfAjjCW0
Iron Man or Paranoid - Black Sabbath 8)
Rock And Roll McDonald's- Wesley Willis :)

Yeah, especially the guitar. Man, was he rockin'!
My favourite Rock song has to be
Queens of the Stoneage - Better Living Through Chemistry
Other than that i just love every song by the band "Kyuss" Which is what QOTSA was before they became QOTSA
Not really. Josh Homme was in both for their full runs and Nick Oliveri was in Kyuss for a bit and with QOTSA for two albums. But apart from that it's a completely different lineup - Homme never even sang in Kyuss!

Well my favorite is Stairway to Heaven.
I dare to differ.
I hate rock.
That's okay, I hate dance.
(Except EBM kinda stuff)
Definitely Soul to Squeeze - Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Listen to the guitar, and Anthony's voice. Pure Magic.

Not at all, I mean like VNV Nation. (The most popular example)
I'm not entirely sure on what is classed as EBM or not, but I don't think the two artists you mentioned are.
EDIT: My fave EBM (According to wiki) is And One.
oh damn!
i mixed it up with IDM!
I was going to save my second post for my GiP thread, but as I love Rock and Roll so much...
Out of the Frying Pan (And into the Fire)
The Meat Loaf version.
Every song on Bad for Good is better than any subsequent Meat Loaf cover except for that one.
Jim Steinman can write on helluva good song.
*WARNING: RANT AHEAD*
Jim Steinman wrote Bat Out of Hell -- The biggest selling debut album of all time.
He wrote Total Eclipse of the Heart (yes, I know that song sucks...) and Making Love (Out of Nothing at All), and because of this became the only songwriter ever to have two songs on the Billboard Top 10--One and Two.
So why is it this guy isn't the most amazingly popular guy in the world?
*RANT CLEAR*

"Tarkus" by Emerson Lake and Palmer perahrps?
Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
It's got everything.
My favourite Songs are:
Queen - bohemian rhapsody
LedZeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Kiss -Strutter
Deep Purple - Soldier of fortune
Jimi Hendrix - All along the watchtower
Pink Floyd- Time
By the way..the biggest sailing debut album is GNR- Appetite for Destruction
I've learned about Rock while playing GTA3.
The almost only times I listened to Rock, in my life, were when I was playing a game from the GTA series.
Now, since you are still reading this, I have decided to finally tell you what is in my opinion the best ROCK song ever! The bad thing is that I can't remember its name and the band.
Now, if you are STILL reading this, it had lyrics something like " in the desert you can't remember your name..". Can you tell me what's the song?
Horse with no name
America
By the way, the GTA station was Dust featuring Tommy Nightmare Smith.
Songs on that radio
Kiss - Strutter
Two tickets to paradise
Running down a dream - tom Petty
White Wedding - billie idol
Horse with no name - America
Barracuda - Heart
I have to say Freebird. That endless guitar solo....
Right also forgot that the radio had Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Now let's count how many times bohemian rhapsody has been posted...
A million?
For me THE best rock song ever has been (since I first heard it), and always will be:
Everlong - Foo Fighters
If you've never heard it, do yourself a favour and have a listen. It sends shivers down my spine, I even bought a guitar mainly intending to learn to play it. Not only that, but the acoustic version is a good one to play to a lady friend. ;)
I'm going to watch them in concert in April, and that song is always last... can't wait!
Crawling - Linkin Park

The Pixies - Hey
Either Stevie's Spanking, or Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?, both by Frank Zappa.

I like them there songs, but I wouldn't call either of them the best rock song ever..
"No one Knows" is good , but I prefer it as a string tribute.
I usually don't venture into the popular threads, but I failed a dice roll and had to go in this direction... Or just happened to.

Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
I'm surprised this only came up once. It's somewhere around the top of the stuff I spontaneously thought of when I read the title of this thread.
However, I think it's stupid to name a "best" anything in music, except in very special circumstances. "THE BEST ROCK SONG" is not a special circumstance.
I suspect the motivation behind many nominations here tends to be nostalgia. At least it would be for me. That's why, although I deeply adore Frank Zappa's musicianship (including the most blatantly "rock" of his music), I really wouldn't mention anything by him in this context. Since it's basically impossible for me to relate to the question truly candidly (What's the best Bach fugue? The best Beethoven piano sonata? Best rock song? Why would you even ask that and expect a serious reply?), I take it more as a kind of drunken hyperbole: "Hey, guys... this, ah, is like THE BEST ROCK SONG EVER." And that ought to be said about something like Bohemian Rhapsody, or Smoke On The Water (although with time I've come to hate the latter more than it deserves)--something with a high nostalgia-to-objectivity ratio. And I'm probably most likely to agree with an answer of that sort, even though if I had to go live on a desert island with only one "rock song" with me, something like "Montana" would kick the crap out of most of them. My appreciation of the latter is perhaps too
sober.
Whatever; the synopsis of my opinion is still that it's all stupid. ^_^
'Incinerate' by Sonic Youth
'Silverfuck' by Smashing Pumpkins
'Suffragette City' by David Bowie
'Hollow Years' by Dream Theater
'Speed of Light' by Joe Satriani
'Champagne Supernova' by Oasis (it sorta counts, right?)
'Alive' by Pearl Jam
'Sick Sick Sick' by Queens of the Stone Age
'Paranoid Android' by Radiohead
'Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine' by The White Stripes
So i couldn't really pick...<_<

Awesome song.
It's impossible to choose but at this very second I'm going to say "Dark Is What I Want" by Apostle of Hustle.
Sad But True - Metallica
Midlife Crisis - Faith No More
I Feel You - Depeche Mode
Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
Come As You Are - Nirvana
....
and many more
Ramble On by Led Zep.
Willing Well II: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness - Coheed and Cambria
The Tiger by DJ Shadow.
Amazing song, heard never something like this before or after.
Great rythm, dark, emotional, energetic!!
The Origin Of Love from Hedwig & The Angry Inch
Duh.
What I've Done by Linkin Park.
"Rainbow in the Dark" by Ronnie James Dio
earlwood, what about Queen? :(
Running with the devil - Van Halen
Cigarettes & alcohol - Oasis
Radar Love - Golden Earring
Town called malice - the Jam
Bohemian Rapsody - Queen
holiday by green day is awesome
through the fire and flames by dragonforce is unbeatable but i dont know if that is considered rock or hard rock/metal
I'd pick All Along the Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix's version)
I'd choose Ace of Spades by Motörhead
"Bringing On the Heartache" - Def Leppard
I would say Led Zeppelin-Stairway to heaven or Deep Purple-Child in Time. 8)
I wouldn't choose one song if I had to introduce someone to rock. Rather, I'd have them listen to tracks 9 (You Never Give Me Your Money) to track 16 (The End) off of the Beatles' Abbey Road.
I'm agreeing with grim107. I mean there are lots of bands and lots of styles. I mean I like Beatles totally, and yet hear Def Leppard.
The beatles arent rock.. they are pop.
Roots Bloody Roots Sepultura/Soul Fly
American Witch - Rob Zombie
Go With The Flow - Queens of the Stone Age
Slight Return (almost ANY live version) - Jimi Hendrix
Bad Romance - Lady Gaga
Best of Both Worlds - Miley Cyrus ;D
Sad But True - Metallica'91
Toooooooooooooooooooooooool of course it is not a song, but a band
Anything from Taylor Swift!! She PWNS!!!!

Wrong. Their early stuff may have been considered pop/rock, but at least for the last two albums, they were just considered rock.
And what amazing albums they were!
Abbey Road is incredible.

Well it is rock, but rock of those times. Much of that stuff might be considered pop today...not to say that "pop" is in any way a negative thing, but it has gotten a negative conotation in the last decade (or two) cause it's been mixed up with other stuff.
Same as you might say early metal of the 60ies is now looked as rock and doesn't really have a lot to do with heavy metal today, maybe by some lyrics.
In any case, what I wanted to say is that definitions of genres change over time, so Calin is right about pop (especially the early stuff), but also grim is right about those being rock songs.
Is this going to be greatest rock song thread like -> my favourite band + song that sounds most like rock?
If that's the case then to prove my point: U2 - Bullet the blue sky
"Every breath you take - The police" ;D
Okay. I used to refuse the whole concept of one BEST ROCK SONG of all times. But I have been proven wrong, oh so wrong. I have discovered the BEST ROCK SONG, and there will be no discussion. There just can't be!
Montrose - Space Station #5
I mostly listen to metal, but I don't count that as rock. When it comes to rock I can't pick between these two:
Go with the flow by Queens of the stone age.
and
Supa Scoopa and the Mighty Scoop by Kyuss.
Which is odd as I'm not really a big fan of Josh Homme ::)
Hmmm Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin maybe
The End - The Doors
Dogs- Pink Floyd
there songs that stand out for me I guess its pretty subjective though
Anything written by me.
Bob Dylan, Hurricane
Tool, Lateralus
Rage Against the Machine, Maria
Justin Beiber - Baby
Heh.
-Bill
no quarter - led zep
AC/DC Big Gun

Creating an energetic rock song actually isn't that hard. Shredding for a heavy metal song is more difficult than most people think unless you just want a generic sound.
Oasis - Supersonic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p29MG7wn4F8)
Best rock song ever. Period.
I would say Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin.
Here is one from Mongolia:

It depends on your current mood.
I find myself nowadays very much attracted to Nine Inch Nail's "Discipline".
Talking Heads - Once In a Lifetime (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFLiKLoxWD8). Best. Song. Ever.
Or maybe it's The Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF_CQGHqzts) - I can't really decide. But it's definitely one of these two :D
