Title: How did you find AGS?
Post by: Phemar on Mon 14/06/2004 14:59:24
So, as the subject implies, How did you find AGS?
...
Were you just browsing the net and found a link?
...
Did you hear it from a friend?
...
Etc?

I remember a thread for this WAY back about the time I found AGS ...

But I never get bored of telling the tale!

I was watching TechTV's show Call For Help (which the bastards have since cancelled) and they talked all about AGS on there and provided a link.Ã,  It sticks in my head that CJ was ON the show, but I can't really remember.

I went to the website and downloaded and started playing around with AGS and my life's never been the same since.Ã,  I spent the next three days doing NOTHING but playing about with it and making my first 100000 room AG with mind-blowing graphics and animation and sounds and wonderful plot/story and the best AG ever made!Ã,  Which was never made.

Typical :)

I think this thread should go into the popular thread forum.

I had been browsing the internet and had ran across AGS.  But I actually didn't download it the first time, I decided to go with AGI studio.  But then I couldn't get it to work for me and I remembered seeing this AGS thing on the internet and gave it a try.  And just like Darth, my life has never been the same.   I still remember drawing my first BG for it and everything.

I found it via 2dadventure.com, which later vaished...
I spent a long time making RL&BAT having nothing to do with the community...
then I started posting during the making of a game with Abstauber and m0ds...
Not the most interesting of stories, but I'm a little proud that my first EVER project actually DID make it as a released game! Now that's what I call inspiration!

Hehe, cool....

I suppose I should post my story:

I actually played Leisure Suit Larry 1 on my cousin's PC. I went home and looked for it on the net...I found a site called http://www.dosgames.com/, it didn't have Larry but it did have a link to AGS. I downloaded 5:00 o' clock in the afternoon and worked straight through the manual/tutorial until 1:00 o'clock in the moring...Hehe...

I played some AGS games, like Larry Vales and Rob Blanc, but I didn't know about the engine until I discovered RON.  I had read about it on underdogs and thought it would be something cool to check out.  I played through them all (this was back when there were about 5 RON games, as opposed to the 60+ today), and thought to myself: "Heck, I could do this!"  So I downloaded AGS.  Five games later, I'm still around.

I remember back then when I was reading a then most popular croatian games magazine, in the letters section a guy asked about game engines, and he mentioned Adventure game studio. He said that it was okay but also that it was a little old, and was asking for advice on new ones.
Thats when i googled it up and saw that this is how the solution to my secondary dreams's name was- AGS.
It was ofcourse v. 2.31 or sooner?, but i remember the Oh-so-revolutionary version with the 2.4 BETA!!11!!

Enough of them clear sentences from me.

Czar

And yes, this was before.

Me and a friend wanted to make a point'n'click western game. We had a great story and looked for the right engine, which turned out to be AGS. We made one background, one front view of a single character, som music and a small test screen where you could look at some hotspots and walk (actually, float since we only had that single frame of the only character) behind some stuff... Then we didn't get any further. I posted a new wersion of our cowboy character at the old forums some time later, when I was planning to make the game myself... Since then I've been a hangaround here and actually finished some games of which one has been played by some of you guys!

I found QFG 4 1/2 on the Underdogs and was totally stunned by its quality...
Having my "Knubbel"-creatures on my mind, I was struck by the idea to make an adventure game myself, downloaded AGS, did a few animations, scripting and Backgrounds and stuff.
Unfortunately, my studium has turned out to be very time-and nerve-consuming lately, so I haven't worked on my game for a long long time now *sigh*...

Hm, I don't even remember... ???
I visited the forums about about 1 1/2 years ago, posted some character art in the Critic's Lounge, then quickly lost interest.
I returned earlier this year and have (slowly) been working on a game ever since.

QuoteEver wonder what CJ was doing or where he was at when HE concieved the idea for AGS???

I was out for a walk in the park and I saw something shiny on the edge of my vision, I ran over to where it was and lifted a rock and WOOP! There was AGS!

It looked so cold and alone so I brought it home and emailed it's creator, CJ was very thankful and had no idea how it got to America. I shipped it back within the week.

I think now all current versions of AGS have their legs hobbled before they're released...

... but it was from downloading freeware adventure games from The Underdogs had I first found AGS.

I posted on a QFG message board and posted in a topic about making a fan game, saying I could do background art.  I got an e-mail from a guy who was making a QFG fangame, who needed an artist.  I downloaded AGS to find out what kind of art would be needed, and started goofing around.  I made a few backgrounds, but the guy never told me what kind of art would be needed, or even what the game was about.  So I kept the backgrounds and started making my own game.

Well, AGS came to me in an acid induced dream, in which I, while sitting in the desert eating peyote with Jim Morrison, had a revelation, and I wandered to the nearest internet oasis, upon where AGS was presented to me, engraved upon the golden scrolls of Moroni.

Actually, I can't remember how I found it; probably some abandonware site had a link; I've been using AGS for years now.  The first version I had was in DOS, though.  ROOMEDIT....

It was GIGA GAMES that brought me and SGS together. They had a little report about AGS and offered version 1.52 (i think) on their homepage. I always wanted to do this adventure game about a student girl in a ghost mansion, but so far i had no idea what engine would be best (my first shot was way back... i used klik'n'play... worst mistake i ever made).
so i tried AGS and was extremely surprised how good it was- next day i browsed the web for the homepage and BANB- I'm here to stay!

I played "Out of Order" once last summer, and I loved it.  I then played every Point and Clicker I could find.  Yet, I don't remember  ever playing an AGS game until January of this year.  It was "The Uncertanty Machine."  I was trying to figure out AGAST, because I started to really enjoy the genre(and I thought I should try to make one).
I was linked to the development tool of "The Uncertainty Machine", and I was hooked.  Within a month, I had finished my first game.

Just think.  If ratracer was never born, I wouldn't be here today...

I was looking for some new simgle player Halflife modifications when I came across this site made by someone name Blended who made games on a whole. He made Halflife maps, Quake maps, and made an AGS game, where I found the link to this website. I'm one of those action-game obsessed dumbasses, but I still prefer a puzzle involving items, Monkey Island Series is a fave. I have them all :). I actually found this recently, and am still learning the tutorial.

I might as well put my story here to.

I was a little boy... I played games all the time, but I could never find the one that had EXACTLY what I wanted. Everything. So I looked around game makers and after hearing top remarks for AGS I decided to try it. Then found more games and am now crawling back to it. ;D

I actualy had it instaled on to my computer before but then I was about 13 years old and I wasn't interested in making any games. And I seemed so complex on forstsight so I delete it (duh, if I only knew).

Ok, here's the story about how I found AGS.
It was back in 2002 when I found Night of the Hermit on World of Monkey Island. I downloaded it and played it. I liked the game and had an urge to make my own adventure game. I contacted Roy Lazorovich and asked him how to make Adventure games. He told me about AGS and gave me the link to it. So I checked it out and downloaded the program. At that time I got the Dos version of it and it was really complex to understand how it worked, so I gave up. About the same peroid I got myself my first chatmate Chris Page (known as cpage) and he knew about AGS and told me that there was a Windows version. So I went there, downloaded it and started to experiment with it. That's how I end up here.

If I remember correctly, I first read about it in an EGM article. I visited the website but didn't download it, for some reason. At some point last year, and after playing some games such as the King's Quest remakes, I decided to download it after all. I think the first version I downloaded was 2.54.

Well, I was a frequent member of a RM2K website and staffmemeber as a midi maker... Then someone posted on the forum about a game over at Gaming World called 5days a stranger by Yahtzee...

Anyway I played it, and remembered how much fun I had with kings quest and space quest and all those games... when I found it was made on AGS I got it and downloaded it... when i found it had its own scripting language I got to work (rm2k is all click based scripting)... I program for a living, and as a hobby, so I was amazed on how fast I was at scripting things, even not knowing the scripting language at all... anything I didn't know how to do I searched the manual... I think I asked like 2 or 3 questions on the beginners tech and boom... been here since then... and that game is STILL in production... interupted on account of war :P...

I love that I can use that as an excuse....

EDIT: I remembered the name!!!

AJA told me. I tried it, but the work was sticky, so I gave up.... We had "The Island" as a team project, I didn't do anything else for then the story and one character, so no AGS there. Then, I one day visited the forums, signed up, but didn't read much, nor post anything.

Maybe a half a year later from that, I gained interest on AGS, because of the Windows Roomedit (which of AJA told me, aswell), and started posting on the forums, shortly after I started using AGS. I didn't post on the tech forums though, only in the Critcs lounge and GIP, and when I had gained some knowledge on AGS, I started trying to help out on the beginners tech, and asking some advanced questions on the Tech Forum....

So I started my first small scale project, which didn't turn up pretty much anything, a start of a story, a few characters and backgrounds, all graphics and AGS work gone for some reason, but the story is still somewhere archived on my laptop... I swaer(sp?) I will some day finish the story and make that game. Well, anyway, shortly after that I started another project, which dried out too, and AJA closed it's topic in the GIP >:( (well, a mod locked it, but so to speak)... That game I will not return to, most likely... I started a third project, which still lays unfinished on my laptop... There's even an open thead for it in the GIP, I shall get back to it too.... memories....

Happy now?

I got a guide on how to make games in GameMaker (which sucks big time) from a friend because I was testing it out a little.
In the guide there was two links to other game-making programs,
some 3D pinball-program which I forgot the name of (if someone know, please tell me where to find it ) and AGS.
Since I love point n' clicks I figured, "What the heck, I could try it out!" and that's how it all started for me :)

Well, for me it started around 2 years ago. I'd played every single LEC adventure, MI last for some reason.

Noticing the lack of similar games, I quickly took to the internet. I'd been to the AGS site a few times before I actually downloaded it.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get to grips with it (at all) so I gave up.

Around...10 months ago, I picked it up again, and here I am, fulfilling my dream of an MI (shudder)-fangame.

I was interested in game making since i found some program that allows u to right IF. At the time i thought wicked, cool, awsome. I looked on another site and found AGS. At the time it was still DOS. didnt do much with it though. but I still made a couple small demo-y games with it. Then all of a suddern windows came out and the forum was booming. but for some strange reason I havnt been able to make anything with the windows version. Even though it would probably be easier to use, i kinda miss the harder dos ways. Oh and graphical scripts rocked!

I think I might have first stumbled across AGI after finding Al Lowe's website, downloaded my childhood favorite The Black Cauldron...I think i fiddled around with AGI, didn't like it...but then I think that site linked to theunderdogs, and then i think that led me to AGS.Ã,  I played 2ma2's games, the Kings Quest remakes, and was very impressed both with what people had done, and what you can do.Ã,  I think i tried out graphics with paintshop pro, but was frustrated...and it wasn't till many months later when i was unemployed in berlin that i sat down and started to really work on graphics and a game...thanks largely in part to the tutorial on kafkakoffee (thanks eric!).Ã,  and that's that.

Well...
I was (and still am) making games with AGI.
It's a good program, only if the graphics weren't so bad.
So I thought I'd look for something better. So I looked and I looked and finally found AGS.
At first I made some crappy games wich I never released. I just tried the program.
It was easier to make games too. I could make a game without knowing any programming languages. But the possibilitys what you could do in the game were much more less without any AGS programming skills. So I learned a bit the programming langugage.

That's a long story.

Since I have memory, the dream of my life was make my own videogame. I was a child, i played  games like Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle, And then I said, I have to makle one of these. My own adventure game.

Years passed, And I was fourteen. Some friends and I found a program that at first time looked easy to use, and allowed us to make simple games. We made a little very silly games of the tipical spaceship tha kils martians. That was so simple, that was our first step into the world of programation and creation of games, but that wasn't still my dream.

Two years passed, and we found RPG Maker and MUGEN, but we never enden a game with those programs. We made up an amateur group dedicated to just trying to make an acceptable game. But we failed at the attemp.

Finally, one yaer ago, I made the discover. In a page "witch name I don't want to remeber", I found a link to the web page of a programthat was said that was able to create Adventure Games easily. I though :"that's not possible, I must be just another program like RPG Maker, that makes all the games equal" But I found the program, saw it was free, installed it, and started to think tha heaven finally gave me the key to make my chilhood dream come true. I started building my dream with a game that my friends though it should be unfinnished, like the ones before I discovered AGS.

Has passed a year since that, and I'm just a few days of work of making true my dream, with the game that my friends though I could not finnish.

That's my story about how I discovered AGS.

Edit by Andail: This is what he said:

My friend was looking for a game making programme, and he came across AGS. Now we are making one game each, although his one is not going to be released for another two years, as it is a huge adventure game.
I, however, just stick with the basics.
If it weren't for Google, I wouldn't be here.

I read an article in PC Gamer UK a few years back when several authors of Monkey Island fangames were sent cease-and-desist letters by LucasArts. It had a quotation from Mixnmojo, and, my interest stirred by the discovery of a LucasArts fan-site, I typed in the first web-address that came into my head. Thank goodness www.mixnmojo.com was correct :S.

From Mixnmojo I found a link to MonkeyGames (who were at that time hosted by them), and played The Treasure of Drunk Island. I also took a look at the ideas for their new game, which was to be made using SCRAMM.

Ben Croshaw joined MonkeyGames, and I saw his Rob Blanc games appear on the MonkeyGames website - naturally, I played them. These led me to the AGS website, and my permanent state of defiantly NOT releasing a game. One day, I will, honest...

It was a long time ago. I think I was in the eighth grade.. which would be about 1999, but it's hard to be sure. Anyway, I was browsing game links at thefreesite.com, and found dosgames.com. Dosgames.com had a link to AGS, which I found and played around with briefly. Some time later (unsure of how long) I found the forum and at the time posted as Trouble1201. Mostly I've just hung around and played other people's games, though I've made some small twerpy test games from time to time. When I found it I had big plans, that fell through.

I was skimming through Underdogs, despairing at the lack of point and click adventure games these days, and decided on a whim to simply type 'Point and click adventure games' into a search engine. AGS was the first link. Simple as that.

I always had the vague idea of making my own game, but as yet, I've simply been downloading and playing the games on offer. I'm rather an adventure game addict, so I was almost overwhelmed by the number of games, and all free! How did I manage before? Lol.

At a certain moment in my life, precisely 28th of April 2003, I wondered weither there would be any freeware point&click adventures around, after I finished Jack Orlando.

I searched for it... and finally somehow came onto the AGS site! I was like amazed! I told all my friends about it...so I told no one! ;)  hehe...

I had been wanting to create an adventure game for a while but hadn't really known of any engines for it. After doing a search (ah Google...) stuff for AGS came up so I looked into it. I didn't download the software til I saw what the program could do (also known as I played Dark Ages and loved it :P) and since then I've had the software but only recently had the motivation to actually get down to learning it.

Well here's mine, ever since I was a wee lad, I've always wanted to make an adventure game (because I couldn't get enough of them) but back then there wasn't a lot of opportunity to do that, so I dropped the idea. 7 years later (long time huh?) I just replayed SQ4 and then I remembered how much I wanted to make one, so I went to google and searched “how to make an adventure game” and I looked through the links and found something promising, I clicked the link and voila! I'm here today making games.

i found it because i was searching for SCUMM because i thought that it turned to freeware(i mean it was used to create games 10 years ago)
so i searched until i stumbled into a link to Amberfish Arts http://amberfisharts.com/
down right corner there were teams creating adventure games and i thought, why not theck them out, i had gone in like 3 or 4 teams until i got to the team, creating The Rise Of The Hidden Sun, there to the right there were steps to create an adventure game, so i checked them of, one of the step was, what engine to use to create the game, and two option came up, one of them was AGS but i don't remember what the other one was, he said that he used AGS (because it was easier) so i checked it out, dl 5 days a stranger, which i LOVED and went creating the game
i joined this forum when i needed help and there you got it

First I was browsing for old adventuregames and found AGS through a link-page on some adventuregame-engine site. But back then it was a dos-program and I just didn't get going. Then I forgot about AGS.

Later (in 2003) I think I went browsing for old adventuregames again and actually found AGS through a link-page on the same adventuregame-engine site I had visited some years before. Now AGS was a windowsprogram (version 2.5 I think) and I started making Frank the farmhand.

Well, to make a big story tiny, my dad had this old CD with mac games on it, and on this CD was a game called StoryMaker 1.0, which was like a program that made text adventures, except with graphics and sound, and you could click on stuff, almost like a graphical adventure game with a text parser. I eventually got frustrated with it, and I wanted something easier. So I went on Google, looking for an adventure game creator, and, well...

It took me ages to find AGS!
I'd played The Secret of Monkey Island and loved it.
I then spent FOREVER trying to find something that let you make a game like it.
I downloaded: 'The Games Factory', *cough*
Game Maker, *No comment*
I even started trying to learn pure script
but I soon got bored of making red little balls bounce along an unnecessary glamorous wall...
And then, somehow, I found it on some strange site listing a whole lotta games! The moment I saw the site - with the 5 Days a Stranger screenie on, I knew it... I'd found my program.
:'( And I promised myself I wouldn't cry...

BTW Zor, I hope ur reading all of these! Coz if ur skipping over some poor guy's AGS story you really need ur bum smacked!

Truthfully, I don't exactly remember how I found AGS, but I have a theory or two...

See, more than once I've gone looking for games engines, open-source or just game makers, whatever. Truth to tell, I wanted to make a Master of Orion clone because MoO3 sucked like the Mighty Hooverâ,,¢, and MoO2, while still an amazing game, wasn't quite the experience I wanted.

So I was hoping, if nothing else, to find a simple scripting language with built-in graphics support (I've programmed before, but graphics manipulation was always way above my head for some reason. I figured if I were to find a graphics engine I could probably do the rest) and I probably ran across AGS in a Google search or something. "free game engine" and variants on that theme turn up a lot of interesting items on Google.

I'm sure I ran across AGS, said to myself, "Ooh, adventure games!", saw how small AGS was and DL'ed it. Then I got involved in my Star Wars fan film and a copy of AGS--still compressed and untouched--sat on my hard drive for about two years.

I ran across it a month or two ago, and the thought of making an adventure game just sort of ate at me until I started doing something about it, so here I am. I've been thinking about a project to do once the fan film is finished anyway and it fit nicely into a game format, so...

Long story short, I found AGS, I started creating games (I gave up on them since the character animating was killing me.Ã,  :-[) ,and now, I'm still trying to create a complete game, exept this time I'm having less trouble.

Sit down kiddies and enjoy the tale:

I was merely getting really bored at school, and I kept hearing a deep-toned voice calling out to me. It seemed to be coming from a place on the computer called "teh internet" or some such thing. I looked around cautiously to see if anyone else heard it too. The boy sitting next to my (coincidentally my best friend) named Nova-Invicta (http://novainvicta.blogspot.com/) (his parents mustn't have liked him) was focused on his immensely boring school work. So it had begun - my quest to find an adventure game. I had recently played and finished Leisure Suit Larry and the Land of the Lounge Lizard. I decided to find a website which had adventure games on it for me to download. The voice told me to Google for "point and click adventure games". And so I did. I found the seemingly godly figure known as Yahtzee. I downloaded 5 Days a Stranger and 7 Days a Skeptic. They were so good and I was still under the infuence of the voice so I went searching for more. I found a site called Big Blue Cup, and wondered what kind of wacky viruses it could behold. As I went to click to the next page of results, my mouse-hand was taken over by the strange voice and clicked on the link. It brought up the home page and I saw the Games Main Page and realised I was in heaven. I proceded to download many a game on the school computers, and bring them back on my flash drive. Until one day I came home and looked on PC and found a program I had never seen before: AGS Editor. I abruptly opened it and as if I was an adventure game character being controlled by a player I began creating my first game.

And that, my friends, is how mozza bought his alarm clock.

The End

I found AGS around the time I was still planning on making Cubert Badbone with SCRAMM but decided that it was useless to wait around and started looking for another engine. So, I downloaded it, played around with it a bit...

AND HATED IT!

Which, of course, led me to use AGAST instead, and then SLUDGE.

And that's my story.

I played Pleurghburg, not realizing that it was made using a free program, then I found 5 Days a Stranger and decided to find out what was so special about this so called "AGS". Thus I visited this site, made about 4 games and released none. ;D

I started playing computer games after my college exams in 2001. I didn't know a thing about games before that (except the spelling).

Was led into Gamehippo.com Tried a couple of RPGs(hated many because I died to fast), discovered Rob Blanc series--the first adventure games I played(didn't know it was made using AGS then) I loved them. That led me to ambrosine.com & I found Pleurghburg. Played it & enjoyed it tremendously. Found out it was made using 'Adventure Game studio' & got to the site.

I played every game I could download. Visited the forums everytime I could get opportunity(sometimes hours at a day).

PS: I'm probably one of the older members here but I post very less and like to browse & read what others say. (My real life personality getting reflected here) so I'm probably still thought as a newbie.  ;)

I downloaded some free adventure games from free games sites like underdogs, etc. After playing all of them I couldn't understand why Chris Jones was on al the exes. I thought, geez, this guy makes a lot of adventure games. But then I realized he made the actual engine, the rest is history ...

Some of those games were Cirque de Zale, Apprentice 1 and one of Yakhzee's games

Sassy?  Well, maybe they just haven't made the right emoticon for sass. :P  I hope you realize that as the only one on these boards who knows me in real life, you'll be subject to all sorts of interesting questions.

"What kinds of shoes does The Ivy wear?"
"Can she recommend a reliable automobile?"
"Does she take her coffee black, like her men?"
etc.

Welcome to the boards, SmootH. ;)

P.S. I found AGS through a friend.  If you beat my game, she's mentioned in the credits.

See look at that sass! Sass, I say! Luckily I have a blanket answer for all those questions: Knowing ruins the mystique like when a magician you shows you how to do the disappearing elephant trick and then you get banned from the Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey's Circus for life.

And when it comes to guys, if this is all jokes,  its the size of his, you know. You Know *wink Wink, Nudge Nudge* wallet

ps - According to New York State law, if an elephant gives you a funny look you DO NOT have the right to make it disappear.

I just found it.  That's all.  I just...found it.  There was no means of how I did it.  I just did.  I just downloaded it.  And started using it.  No story.

Wow I'm a liar.

I'm a huge fan of Monkey Island, so one day I was searching Google for Monkey Island sites, and came across MILegend (http://www.milegend.com/forums/).  Well...that eventually led me to Fangames.co.uk (http://www.fangames.co.uk/V6/forum/) due to the number of users that visited both sites.

This, in turn, led me to read this (http://www.fangames.co.uk/V6/features/index.php?feature=2) article written by the one and only ED.  Imagine my joy when I realized that normal regular people were making computer games from home...and for free!

I looked around for probably 6 months to a year before settling down here...no offense...but Roger and the default GUI really scared me (I questioned the engine's graphic abilities).

Some time later (a few months perhaps?) I decided that one particular feature (which shall remain undiscussed) that I desperately needed and wasn't implemented was important enough that I would go use AGAST instead.

It didn't take long for me to realize I did not have the type of coding experience AGAST would require of me.  So I came back to AGS...learned how to code...learned how to actually use AGS...and never ever ever ever even dreamed of leaving again.

I think I first read about it on the forums of SCRAMM or mabye RoBOT at the International House of Mojo, but I didn't find any finished games back then and it looked like being limited to Sierra style games, so it didn't catch my attention until the first games were mentioned on the Home of the Underdogs forums.

How did I find AGS?
Well, I was going into the sixth grade, and I thought I was awesome because I had Game Maker 4. (ugh)
My only problem with it was that it couldn't make good adventure games. I didn't do anything about it until one day, my mom said Tierra had remade King's Quest I and II. This amazed me that a team of people could make a game, and I wondered where I could get it. I had been playing Sierra games since I was three years old, and I had a geek-ish family, so when Mom told me they made it with this neat little program called AGS, I jumped at the chance to download it.
I fiddled around with it and got...
NOTHING!
I had no idea how to use walkable areas, or even script.
A few months later, after I got the hang of it, I started to make a crappy game called Sean's Quest. It was basically about me, and was composed of ripped screens. (it was fun though because you ould beat up King Graham)
I actually finished that game, but I never released it. Maybe someday.
Anyway, I continued to work with AGS for a good 4 years. I'm still not amazing at scripting, but I love AGS so much that I just keep trying.

Waaaay back when, when The Forgotten Element was going to be an RPG I went browsing for free RPG making packages. From here, I found a link to all manner of different freeware game makers including AGS. The thing was, my initial impressions of AGS were not... ummmm... all that great. The other game creators I downloaded were more obviously game creators in the sense that upon firing up the tool, there was a screen, a sprite window, and perhaps as close to a Wizard for getting going. Whereas AGS was a treeview with no immediately obvious "this makes adventure games" kind of feel to it.

However, it stayed on my harddrive (given that the game was going to be an RPG, I didn't really look into AGS as anything more than a curiosity).

Slowly, over time, the game evolved into a point-and-clicky and I figured I'd show Lemmy AGS to see what he thought. By this time, I'd browsed this forum a bit and was a little more convinced of the power of AGS.

So I fired it up and showed it to Lemmy. Lemmy took one look at the scripting language and the plugin support and said "YES! Brilliant!" shortly followed by "OMG! CJ's written Intellisense!". And we were sold and we've been floating around here ever since.

Huzzah!

Back in 2000 I was at uni and we'd just made a text based adventure game for a software engineering project. I realised after this I could never enjoy programming boring business applications and wanted to make a game, not a game engine so I found AGS and started a small project, which became Just Another Point n Click Adventure... and a bizillion years later i'm even thinking about finishing it. I might even resign to the fact that i'll have to do the art myself.

Just Another Point n Click Adventure was my ticket into the games industry as a programmer, and now i'm working for Codemasters on next-gen Colin McRae Rally =0). Though i'd still rather work on a 320x200 point n click adventure for PC.

Adventure games are the best games around, and thanks to AGS they'll never die!

I found it not so long ago. I had originally gotten AGI but gave up on it as it wasnt working for me either, and forgot about it all when I got too busy with my studies. I have only just recently revisited my great love for games and thought about making my own games. So I looked for a way to do this and emailed someone who was a game developer and he referred me to another game developer. Must I mention both are real talented and make great games. Anyway the 2nd game developer told me about AGS so I came here to have a look and was hooked! I have spent the last week reading all the manuals and threads :) and have now been working on graphics, backgrounds, sprites and characters. Very excited! A HUGE thank you to CJ for making this program and to the forum members for helping and supporting each other at this forum site :). This would have to be my all time fav forum site out of many I have visited in the past.

Hmm, how did I find AGS...
I just stumped on it somewhere on my hard drive. Oh yeah, it even wasn't my hard drive, it was a backup I burn onto DVD-R. And by looking through it randomly I found strange archive called adventuregamestudio.rar. The name was SO tempting... (I used G.A.C. back on Spectrum)
I really do not know how it appeared there. Really.
It was divine intervention or some PC magazine CD which I've looked through, picked up some software in a separate folder and forgot.

I was showing MI3 to a younger friend of mine who had never been introduced to adventure games, and that gave me the itch to play through Grim Fandango again, and by the time I got to the end, I had decided that I was going to make my own adventure game or go nuts.  I wracked my brain for a puzzle scenario and started thinking about characters.  The wheel stopped on "robot."  From there, I started developing a premise.

It then occurred to me that I'm not a programmer.

I knew that there were some clever folk out there hacking SCUMM, but after some Google work it became apparent that this wasn't for me.

Some last-ditch, desperate Googling finally led me to AGS.

In germany, there is a games-related magazine called 'GameStar'. They once had a 'Freeware' special - they had about 1/3 of a page long articles about truly great Freeware games and a CD with them on. So I looked around on it a little and stumbled upon an adventure game called 'Seven Days a Skeptic'. I thought 'why not' and played it through. Afterwards, I checked the credits to see whether the author had made any sequel or prequel. And there it was... Hm... 'Adventure Gaming Studio'?

Also on the CD were 'Apprentice I' and 'Apprentice II'. And in both credits - this AGS thing again! So I checked and immediatly got excited - I programmed before, in C++, and so I could immediatly start off scripting.

This is a long story...

When reviews of the Xbox version of Psychonauts appeared, my interest for the game grew. Though the  previews before the release made me think it would be an average Platformer. Nevertheless, I kept my eye on it, but thought this game would never triumph my all time favorite Platformer, Mario 64.

As more reviews for Psychonauts popped up with excellent scores, my interest grew even bigger. Then I got my hands with the Official Xbox Magazine demo and was surprised with the gameplay and characters. That there settled it, I HAD to buy the game when I had the money. Well... I never did have enough money to buy it and soon enough my Xbox broke. My fault too since I fist pounded where the DVD drive was because of constant freezes. I should  have just opened it and clean the lens.

So at that time Xbox 360 was close at hand, so I decided to save up money for it. I figured why buy an Xbox when I can get an Xbox 360 which would more than likely be backwards compatiblie with Psychonauts. So I got a Xbox 360 (still have it) and had been patiently waiting for Psychonaut to be backwards compatiblie.

Months passed by and I kinda forgot about Psychonauts. Then the latest patch came out and lo and behold! PSYCHONAUTS!

I uploaded the patch and went to find the game. I went to most of my local stores to hunt for the game and after several searches I found the last copy at Best Buy for $30. I quickly nabbed the game and went home to enjoy it. Several days of playing made me completely fall in love with the game. The cast of characters, art direction, gameplay, level design, story and music blended so well together that Mario 64 was dethroned from my all time favorite Platformer game ever!

What an awesome game. This was like 2 months ago by the way. I loved (still do of course) it so much, I did some research on the game and who created it. I knew before hand of a developer called Tim Schafer, but didn't search info on him till my love for Psychonauts.

I read about him online and what people would consider his best game ever created... GRIM FANDANGO.

I thought, if I loved Psychonauts and many claimed Grim Fandango to be his best, why not give it a shot. I went to Ebay to see the bids. Not many listed as its about 10 years old. Though I didn't see any sealed US copies. I'm very picky with games. I will usually never buy  game unless its factory sealed. I figured evenutally someday a sealed version would pop up on Ebay.

A few days passed and I was talking to my brother on MSN messanger. Somehow I mentioned Grim Fandango to him while he was on Ebay and he sent me a link to a sealed US copy. Sad thing was that I didn't have Pay Pal, but the seller accepted money orders.

The next day, I create an Ebay account and placed a bid. I HAD to play this game to see what all the fuss was about. Then my brother logged in his MSN (He's from Arkansa and I'm from Texas by the way) and I told him I made an account and bid on that particular Grim Fandango he linked me about. He then offered to bid for me since he had Pay Pal. He would get it and then ship it too me while I'd send him a money order to pay him back. It'd be much quicker this way.

So 2 days later the auction was comming to an end. I told my brother to place the maxium bid of about $31 dollars at the last few seconds. I was nervous and excited as the time came close at hand. My borther had won it! HA! I now had it! My brother won it for me for $28.88. That same day a few minutes later, I took the bus to my local grocery store to get a money order and mail it to my brother.

So as I waited for my bother to get it and then he in turn mail it to me, I figured I'd do some more research in the Adventure genre, to become more familiar with it, since the last Adventure game I had played was Myst for Sega Saturn. I then remembered of an old Adventure game called Maniac Mansion, that a lot of people seemed to mention every now and then through out my life.

I decided I'd try to find a downloadable PC version of it (ARR MATEY! heh... If you know what I mean). This should hold me over till I get my hands on Grim Fandango as well as familiarize myself with this genre. I then performed a search which led me to a link. I got the Deluxe verion and played it. Had fun, but still being new to this genre, some of the puzzles were hard. I got a bit fustrated and looked at a guide towards the end of the game. Thats when I had even more fun becuase I knew where to go next.

During the time, I went to a gaming forum and learned that it wasn't an illegal game download, it was free. I thought that was pretty cool. Eventually I beat the game. I wanted to play another of the same genre, so I went back to the link and went to the Adventure freeware games link option. There was quite a few. One in particularly caught my eye.

A Tale of Two Betrayals had nice art, so I downloaded it and played it. Shame that it was a very short game. I believe this was the first of the point and click Adventure games I had beat without the use of a guide. I ended up beating it and looked at a guide afterwards. Thats when I learned I got the bad ending. Heh.

After that, I downloaded 5 Days A Stranger. That game had me hooked! It took me a little over 5 hours to beat. Every bit of it was captivating. I loved it and went to Yahtzee's home page and found that 5 Days A Stranger was part of a series. I immediately downloaded the remaing three of the series. While looking at his site, I stumbled into a link that lead me to Adventure Game Studio's web page.

I thought "WOW" this site has a lot more free games dedicated to Adventure games than the other site I found Maniac Mansion Deluxe on. For three days, I was downloading the games with scores of 80% and higher (also a few below 80%). Having a modem takes a while to get them downloads, but it was worth it!

I now had downloaded 36 of these games after three days. The next day I finally recieved Grim Fandango! Now I am focusing on beating Grim Fandango. Once I beat it, I have 36 others to keep me busy for a long time! Its kind of nice being new to this genre and having found this site because right now I have a lot of gaming ahead of me to catch up. Its like I found a treasure!  ;D

All this would have never happened if it weren't for Psychonauts. I will never forget how this game opened a new world of gaming to me. Also, I thank the community for these games, without them we'd have no such site. :)

Blimey, that was a long story! For those who can't be arsed to read all that:

Psychonauts = Tim Schaefer = Grim Fandango = Free adventure games = AGS

I'm not convinced Ebay was the cheapest way to get Grim Fandango though. Although you did get a sealed copy at least. Was it the budget version though?

Finally, you wouldn't have been physically able to reach the laser in your xbox console without using a crowbar, so no regrets there. (Except for the bashing part)

My adventure game adventure begins with Christmas, lo those many years ago. The (seemingly) obscure game 'Escape from Monkey Island' was for me. I started it the next day, and played it a good deal. However, when I left for my mom's house it was all but forgotten.

Two years later, my geekiness brought me and my mom to TrekFest XXI, down in Riverside, Iowa. A nice road trip, and even though neither of us are 'trekkies', per se, it was still a ot of fun. I bought the Interplay game 'Star Trek: Judgment Rites' (an excellent game) for ten bucks, still in special edition box. When I finished playing through it the fourth time (finally not getting kicked out of Star Fleet and moved to a planet for 'mental evaluation' at the end) I decided I'd have easily payed ten bucks for just the game.

I then remembered how terribly awesome EMI was, and played that all the way through.

I then told dad that these games brought back the faintest of memories of him playing King's Quest III To Heir is Human. I then pressured him into buying the big King's Quest Megaset, only to arrive at the conclusion that LucasArts made better (albeit harder to come by [why don't they re-release Monkey Island? WHY?]) games. I then went online to find out about getting some good old fashioned Monkey Island awesomeness. This took me to the world of amateur gaming, and I got pretty excited about it. The next Christmas, my dad got me Game Maker v1.6, and I expressed my chagrin at being able to do absolutely nothing I wanted to do. So I went online searching for something made expressly for adventure games.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Yes that was a long story. I'm not much to type a lot, but this site and my new passion for Adventure games made me type that up.  ;D

As for what it cost me, I believe the reason it was a bit of money was because its the US version which is harder to find than the UK version. Then the fact it was factory sealed.

Now I'm not totally aware how many version of Grim Fandango there were, but the one I got only came with a jeweled CD case. There is no huge box and the wierd thing about the back of the booklet is that it has a copyrighted date of "1997". Also theres nothing on the cover stating its a re-release or budget, it only a picture of the well known Grim Fandango logo with Manny, Mece and Domingo and the other guy.

Which is strange since it was released in 1998. Kinda wierd, but I'm not the only person whose booklet says that, theres someone else at another gaming forum that wrote a review also stating its from 1997, which leads me to believe he or she also has the exact thing written in the back of the booklet.

So I take it there was the big box version and just the jewel CD case version. Are there any more versions? Which came first? I'm thinking my copy must be a second print since back then PC games came in a big box, or I'm I mistaken?

Oh, almost forgot, the Xbox is pretty easy to open. I had the tools to open it. I actually did and it was actually the lens that had a coat of dirt on it, but the top part of the drive was caved in a bit with my Hulk-like fist smash. I ended up caving it back out by opening the drive's top case, but after a few weeks, it broke. The damage was already taking a toll on it.

Hmm weird, the guy who taught me how to repair PS2's said he couldn't get to the drive. Are the UK and US versions built the same I wonder.

Is there a barcode on the back of the box for Grim? If it's sealed I imagine you're okay. Just checking... You can get a jewel box inside a big box, see. My Leisure Suit Larry 6 is like that.

Oh, and on the back of PS2 game Okami, it says copyright 2006 on it. Yet it came out about a month ago. Either it's when they printed it, or when it was released in other countries. (it being a Japanese game)

Post by: Fleshstalker on Sun 11/03/2007 18:04:31
Its really easy to open the dvd drive. Once you open the case of the Xbox, there are 2 screws holding the drive. Before that there is another screw to hold the HD drive. You remove that screw and proceed with the other 2.

The you have to pop the dvd drive out. Then theres 2 smaller screws on the side of the dvd drive and simply remove them and you are now inside the lens. Perhaps the US & UK version is different.

As for my Grim Fandango copy, yes it has a bar code on the back of it. Does the box version only have a bar code on the back of the big box? Well heres the Ebay link of the game my brother had won for me:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=001&sspagename=STRK%3AMEDW%3AIT&viewitem=&item=110093751852&rd=1&rd=1

Thats is also a bit weird of your Okami game. Heh.

I don't understand all this "I have a 97 CD!". Didn't it come out in 97? I think I have the same thing you do, Fleshstalker, only I actually bought it from the LucasArts website (I think I must have been one of the last to do so, because they don't seem to be selling it anymore). It's also just a jewelled CD case (I miss those big boxes with those gifts/bonuses I used to get from LucasArts), and it also says copyright 1997.

As for the topic of this thread, I'm not sure, but I think I've replied to it before. Anyhow, I first got interested in making adventure games in.....1998? 1999? I googled, and found the adventuregamestudio.co.uk site. Downloaded AGS, made a few pictures, puzzles and interactions, then got stumped at the Palette bit. I was more into playing the games, and I remember anticipating every new part of a series called "The Book of Spells"(I think). I slowly forgot about AGS, only to return 4-5 years later, to find out that it had a windows version! And 16bit colour! Yay!

Because its weird. It was released in September 30, 1998. Probably the mucked up when printing the booklet of the jeweled case version. Thats the only reasonable answer.

I can second that, Matt and Flesh. I have the original version that was released in Germany 98; it also is dated 97. I think that makes sense; box artwork is often done while the game is in golden beta stage, and that explains the "earlier" copyright date.
Calling Grim Schaefer's best stretches it a bit; the setting is of course almost unique, but I'd actually rate Psychonauts, of wich I played the PC version, a tad bit better. I dig the "dive into peoples psyches" more than the film noir setting, and the controls in Grim were, er, grim.

 My story is like this.

I was searching for game creators, and I found a website with a link to lots of them. Unfortunatly, they all bumed me out because they were to small, or to complicated for my mind. I doubted hopes, but a year later I turned back to the website, and noticed a brand new link to AGS!! ;D

i''ve been playing for 3 days now, using every moment to try to create my game. But I'm stuck with a new problem every moment lol.

Well a few years back (3 or 4), I got a PC GAMER magazine, and in the freeware section, was, Wait for it....... AGS!Ã,  :D

But.. I was only 12 or 13 years old then. And I found it confusing and rather hard. So i gave up on it.

Then a couple years later, I bought a PC Powerplay magazine. And on it was 5DAS and 7DAS. I really enjoyed them, except i never finished any of them. I got stuck in 5DAS on the last day, and stuck in 7DAS in the part where captain Barry is trying to kill you.
Ã,  Ã,  When i have up on playing these games, i decided to make my own. And i did, it's called hotel hell. But i never had the internet so i never uploaded it.

But a few weeks (im 16 now), i did get the internet. So i made a website, polished Hotel Hell up a bit and put it on. And then i got a walkthrough for 5DAS and 7DAS, and i beat em. And now i'm really into AGS and making heaps of hopefully good games. My latest one is Azunite's Tale btw.

Well thats how i found AGS, among a lot of other things! :)
And btw, why dont you go and download Hotel Hell, and let me know what you think for it being my first time. And being only 14 when i made it!

I've always been interested in game makers, especially if they'r free.

I was in this clock tower fan website and one of the users pointed out how he was surprised that no one had attepmted to make a clock tower game with AGS.

Of course I was making a fangame at the time, but with RPG maker 2003 (cause there aren't a lot of games out there made from this program, a lot of people may think this program sucks but if it's a clock tower fangame, if it's clock tower related, you just have to play it) and I was also making another game based on a 3 min movie one of the users made for a compettition; it was called halloween horror, I'm using RPG maker 95 for this one; I think it's because it's old and not so popular anymore, I'm attracted into using not so popular things...

Anyway, back to the second paragraph, I googled AGS and found this link. The first game I downloaded and played was Bestowers of Eternity and I loved it  (not much on the graphics though and a few of the lines near the end and the very begining)

Anyway I've already got like ALL the RPG Makers (95,2k,2k3) except for XP. And I was already far in production of my games, so I wasn't going to make a ct fangame with AGS; maybe in the future for the sequel to my curren one.

Instead I decided to make a game with a clock tower: first fear feel ( he first in series of clock tower was made for the snes console, a point and click game) it's currently in research and drafting so I couldn't post it in 'games in production' thread; I will after everything's peiceing together and it's demonstratable (though, I won't be showing any demos, I hate demos!)

so, that's it I learned about AGS in a Clock Tower fansite and I googled it o get the link.

That was last year and I still don't have a game idea or even know how to use the engine. I was busy with school and teaching little kids piano, but the idea of my own game still stuck in my head and I had a lot of friends willing to help me with character ideas over instant messanger or the phone.

4.  I have mony (this may explain #3)

ok not really. Now I just spend more time on the computer.

It all started a couple of years ago. I visited a Navajo elder and among other things he said that I would have a vision in the future. I asked "What vision?" and he said "If you give me something in return, maybe I will tell you." You know, the usual adventure-game-like situation. So, I gave him a pack of tobacco, and he told me that it will be a vision of a "blue spirit". I had almost forgot about it until one night AGS's blue cup came to my dream and it spoke to me. It said "Wake up .. wake and open the editor and be a creator!". Then I fell asleep again. I don't know if it's mocking the spirit but I am yet to finish a game...

;D

Well, actually I came across AGS from an old AGI/SCI site...but the first story is way cooler.

I bought a pack labeled "5001 Games" back in 98 or 99 that contained 4 CDs full of demos, shareware, freeware and a few occasionnal complete games in it, like Leisure Suit Larry 1 EGA. Larry Vales 1 and the old DOS version of AGS were on it too. Made a bunch of backgrounds in MSpaint, messed a bit with it but that was it. Larry Vales 1 didn't impressed me at the time.

Then a few years later while I was playing QFG2, I stumbled on a website with "QFG2VGA remake" written all over it and with pictures, I was very impressed, I downloaded KQ1VGA, a year later I downloaded KQ2VGA+, and 3 months after that I decided to give a try at a few AGS games to see if there were any other good games. I began with Permanent Daylight, which impressed me, then I tried Pleurghburg and 4 days later I was forever hooked to AGS.

And now when I want to scare me, I just have to wonder how different my life would have been if I gave up during the first day on that dreaded locked door puzzle in the morgue.

I think the first AGS game I played was Larry Vales, which I enjoyed, but never even knew it was made with AGS. Then I came across 5 days a Stranger and got intrigued by this "AGS" thing I'd heard about before. So I looked it up. Registered on the forum not too long after, still haven't finished any game, because I'm a lazy slag and I suck at most things required to make a game, but I'll get there in the end :D

I could've sworn I replied to this thread, but it seems I never did.

Back in about 2001 or 2002, I found m0ds' home site (Screen 7) and noticed that he did MIDI soundtracks for free for games. At the time I had the dream of my game, and was using (eeeccchhhh) Visual Basic to make it. He introduced me to AGS and I became a member of the EZBoard forums as a result. I transfered here during the switch in July of 2002.

I actually had tried Adventure Creator (as it was first known as) by searching the internet for game creation programs, but I found it hard to use and didn't know about the forums as a support source. I re-visited it when m0ds told me about it.

Thank you m0ds! :P

Probably because you posted in the EZBOARD era, that thread seemed to be gone though.

Since I think I didn't post mine after the forum move, I'll post about it here:

I was a die hard DOS user, probably around 1998 and 1999 when I searched for DOS utils I found the DOSUser Homepage (it is blasphemy here if you don't know what it was) so I joined the DOSUser mailing list for news on stuff and got news about Adventure Creator releases (in fact I was not a die hard adventure game lover, and never is). I did try some versions of AC at that time but they always crashed on my computer for unknown reasons. When V1.13 was released I decided to give it another try and suddenly everything worked and the rest are all history.

I played adventure games from a very young age. I learned to read and write from commands in Space Quest 1 and I probably can blame Tim Schafer for my wacky sense of humour. I found AGS way back in 1997, when I was maybe about 8 or 9. I used to go into work with my dad on Saturdays (He was a BOFH and did maintenance on the computers). Anyhow, I was obsessed with finding a way to make my own games. I used to use Altavista and search for things. One day I found this program called "Adventure Creator". It perked my interest, but being so young I didn't understand exactly how much work it would take to make my own game. So, it lay forgotten for a few years. Then in about 2001 I picked it up again (now with the shiny new AGS name).

The story about how I found AGS.

I've always had a nostalgy for good old Adventures like Monkey Island or Space quest. Since I'm 14 years old this may seem strange, but the truth is that my first PC (I've had 3 including the current one) was WAY too old and so, I could only put inside the CD the "200 best games of all genres", containing almost all of these good old games, and some not so good old crap.
A couple of years ago I've already had a new PC, a taste of modern games and the Internet. But suddenly the nostalgia had striken me. I tried to launch the "200 best" to replay Space quest 5, but the CD didn't work! Apparently it got too old. I decided to search the Internet for "Free monkey island OR space quest" and after a few bad tries eventually got to the abandonia.com.

To be continued...
Title: Re: How did you find AGS?
Post by: Lionmonkey on Sun 22/07/2007 15:20:22
...and after being thrown from the computer by a mob of angry parents and relatives and regaining the control back, I continue my story. Abandonia.com  contained a lot of abandonware, good old games, which were sucessfully forgotten and not sold anymore. From there I found Abandonia's sister site -- Abandonia Reloaded which was dedicated to "retro remakes and community made freeware. And after finding there  5 days a stranger, I finally found the AGS!

THE END.

I went to google desperate to find a new point and click game. (I played Monkey Island, Laura Bow, Space Quest, Kings Quest, and Inherit the earth about 1,000 times now..and wanted something new.)

I searched around for awhile until it popped up with some article on 5 days a stranger. I clicked on the link they gave me, and it took me to AGS. 5 days a stranger was my first AGS game, then 7 days a skeptic. I was so in love with these games, and they still stand as have favorite AGS games. (along with 6 days a sacrifice, and trilby notes.)

But i pretty much has downloaded any AGS game that looked appealing to me! I pretty much love this site.

I first downloaded it around 1999 or so, I was twelve at the time, I desperately tried to edit that first room, but I had no idea what I was doing, back then the program was SOOO intimidating, especially to a twelve year old, the most I knew how to do with a computer was play Space Quest 3 (yes Space Quest 3, not 6, I'm old school) and then a few days ago I was sitting around the house (as I tend to do) and I thought, you know, that would proabably be easier to use know, so I downloaded the program and started working my way through the tutorial, when I was finished I thought to myself "Is that really the prgram that scared me so much as a child?", now I'm happily trudging along in the production of my very first adventure game.

Sorry, I'm sorta long winded.

thats how it all started.
it had SpiderWeb Software's "Exile 2: Crystal Souls" on it.
so eventually I found their website, I played all their games.
back in those days, they also were distributing "SubTerra" and "SubTerra II".
I found CrystalShard.
playing "WartHogs", "Root Of All Evil", and "Infinite Monkeys" I first experienced the joys of AGS games.
after Radiant made ATOTK I decided to look into this program that was bringing forth so many good games.
so there you have it.

I used to be big into the Klik scene (K&P, CNC, TGF, MMF, all that crap), and I hated the genericness of it all--and i got bored of it. So, I searched for better engines on the net and found a link from some site(i don't remember). I remember when I was a kid playing King's Quest 6 so I downloaded it.

I looked at it, it was all too confusing to me, and I let it sit on my harddrive for God know's how long. A couple of months later i opened it up and something just clicked and I figured it out!

I have been searching a good adventure game engine from about ten of twelve years ago to now. Finally, I don't know when, I find the Ms-dos AGS engine. It was a little complicated and I'nt success in making a decent demo, but some years later discover the windows version and was fascinating!

It started out with the first ever point 'n' click game I played, which was Chasm (a very cool Flash game - if you haven't played it already, search the web for: chasm point 'n' click). I wondered if there were any other point 'n' click games out there, and soon found there were hundreds, if not thousands.

Somewhere along the line I discovered the RON games, and from there it was a short jump to AGS. I couldn't get the hang of it at first, so I deleted it. Then a year or so later I thought I'd give it another go. As I'm not the best at drawing, programming being much more my bag, I teamed up with Ben304, posted loads of newbie questions to Beginners Technical Questions and Trance-Pacific was born...

Once upon a time, years ago, there was a girl who loved adventure games, and played her brother's games night and day until they were all finished. This prompted her to search far and wide on the 'net for "Quest for Glory" fan games, until she came upon QFG 4 1/2, ignored the warnings and played the inappropriate and hilarious game all the way through. From there, with her curiosity peaked, she discovered an amazing site where adventure fanatics had created their own games. She proceeded to play them when she should have been doing work, and thus the habit formed.

I'm thinking about selling the rights for the movie.  :P

First i found some older progs like SCI Studio, roomedit & more of those.
Then I found Quest for Glory 4 1/2 on the net, when the site of that game was still alive.
After that I found the famous KQ1 remake of AGDI, the KQ2 remake was still not released.
I remember there was a site that was first called "Doors of Destiny" and later transformed into fanventures.com. It was done by Broomie (Jamie Broom) who is now doing PR of infamous-adventures.com. fanventures.com had real cool ags game info and interviews, but went down :-(
So, to keep short, I found the AGS website thanx to Broomie's fanventures.com and AGDInteractive.com.

I used to be a regular reader of "all kinds of stuff" a blog by john k ( the guy who made ren and stimpy) and used to look at all the blogs of the people who commented on his blog and sorta follow a trail looking for good art.  I ran across a blog of a guy talking about his first game and how easy and great ags was and how it was free. so I downloaded his game ( some game about a yeti, I don't know who made it but I am forever indebted) and I loved it.  I had a flash back to "les manley search for the king" the first game I ever really spent hours playing, and also "sam and max".  so I downloaded it and was immediately hooked. now I don't go to john K's blog hardly ever I spend all my time here on the AGS forums thinking of Ideas for games researching the possibilities and playing the competitions.  man I love AGS.

I only really got into adventure games in about 1998/1999 - when the 'death' of adventure games was already being declared and they stopped coming out. After I played through Discworld 2, DoTT, S&M, the MI series, Grim Fandango and what Space Quests I could I looked around online for more. Eventually I found adventuredevelopers.com (Incredible to think, that used to be a very good site!) and from there Yahtzee, and from there AGS.

When I downloaded it... I don't know, I was barely able to do anything without making it crash, it was early days. All I basically did was put some Bill Tiller stuff in there and walkable areas and I thought that in itself was pretty amazing. To my shame I found out about Glumol and was one of the crowd waiting out for 'something better', but AGS is definitely the best of the best, and now that I actually know how to program I'm making my own game and having a ball doing it.

I knew I was going to end up making a game one way or another. I don't know if anyone else has done this, but I've often spent my spare time writing walkthroughs for imaginary games...  :)

Since Maniac Mansion and Space Quest IV are my two favourite adventure games of all time, it was only natural that I'd think about them during a day of boredom. So, I basically googled for free adventure game downloads and the like. From there on, I found this site and was mesmerized by RON games.

It's a little complicated.

Okay, here goes. I first discovered AGS sometime in 2005 when I saw a friend playing around with it. It's a bit hazy, but I think that, combined with playing Cirque De Zale (got it off a magazine cover DVD), got me interested in it, and so I copied it from said friend (he had version 2.62).

At the time, I was trying to make an adventure game in Game Maker, a program I had been using for only a few months, and naturally, was having difficulty. So I decided to switch to AGS, to see if that would make things easier.

It did. However, and I'll be honest here, I HATED working with AGS. The mixture of function_names_like_this and OnesLikeThis, combined with the iffy room editor with three seperate sections, in addition to the global and local messages, as well as the whole process you had to go through with strings, not to mention that horrid interation editor and the old resolution issues made me despise every moment I spent working in it. Yuck.

Anyway, I went back to using GM for the game after a while, and scrapped it a while later, for entirely non-technical reasons. But that's not important.

In April last year I read about AGS 3.0 in DevMag (http://www.devmag.org.za) and decided to give the program another chance. Thank goodness I did.

The changes in version 3 are brilliant, absolutely marvellous. You (Chris Jones) have transformed a patchy, inconsistent, old-fashioned, clunky, illogical, and downright painful program into a streamlined joy. I salute you.

I don't believe I've ever mentioned how I fell into working with AGS.

A little over a year ago I downloaded a game called "Out of Order".  Brilliant little comedy game.  It was made with the SLUDGE adventure editor.
I had downloaded SLUDGE and started fooling around with the programming, walk-behinds and whatnot.  When I had come across a thread saying something about a memory leak if you exceed a certain amount of rooms and everyone was saying it will never be fixed, I decided SLUDGE wasn't for me.

After some searching I found out about AGS, it's great community and much better adventure engine.  So it was an easy decision to jump on over here.

And it has been very fun and easy to use.  With only a few minor bumps here and there, usually resolved, or with an easy workaround to get it to work.  I've been happy so far. :)

Since I'm ALWAYS looking for free game engines (even today), it was quite simple to find.

I first found Ags back when it was known as Ac and there was around five people total on the forums. It was near the very first version, if I remember right. We even had a group team formed, Gods of AGS, a bit cheesy if you think about it now. I can not remember the exact year, maybe 1997 or 1998. Our very first project was a story I devised called Two Sorrows (Or was it A Tale of Two Sorrows?). The artist we had disappeared and the project fell apart. I left (for some time) and came back. A ritual I seem to have followed for many years now. I can't even remember how I came upon Ac way back then. Anyway, that's it. Nothing grand nor fancy. Peace.

after programming a shoot em up myself via delphi for about 2 years i got pissed off from putting game elements next to program elements in an very unprofessional way. So i decided to design my on editor to make games. But it shouldnt be a shoot em up editor althought this would be "pretty easy". I wanted something bigger like an adventure, or strategy-game editor. I made a choise: adventure. since there is no a.i. in it.

10minutes later while googling through the net i found the AGS editor which contains more features that i could create in 5years... fighting back my tears i struggled one weak wether i should go the AGS path or not..

now im here :D

i was making board games and stuff like that sice i was about 6, and i had always wanted to create a video game.

anyway...when i was 15v i started watching yahtzee reviews on the escapist and i looked at some of his games.

i tried the AGS engine because that was the one he used and i thought "well if he can do it..."

after failing to create one game, i looed around some other engines and then decided that this was the easiest to use and that i just need to commit abit more.
and soI'm now upsest with my latest game and with the help of densming's videos i'm fairly sure that it's gonna win some AGS awards...

It's gonna be like a dream, i already have a speech prepared and everything. :P

EDIT: i used to be IN LOVE with broken sword :)

Before I found AGS I´ve made my games with game maker(Here is one

I noticed that it were really complex to make an adventure with Game Maker because it´s a total other gamegenre than for example a jump´n´Run. Than I searched for an engine for Adventuregames and of course then I found AGS.

I LOVE AGS!!!

No seriously, no idea.
Either that was such a random occasion that left nothing in my memory, or I have memory problems... or both.

I remember it was 2.72 time (2007 or 2008). I remember I didn't like the interface, at all. I also tried to make some stupid game, but then got bored.
After a year or so I decided to check this again and saw that version 3.0 is just out. Now, I liked the interface :).

It was after playing the Chzo Mythos games, I'm quite the newbie to the engine. It's one of the nicest engines to work with and everyday I discover something new with it. I do plan on making a game with it, but at the moment I'm creating little demos to see how and what works before I implement it all into a game.

I really like first person adventure games, so I'm aiming to do that genre in particular.

I don't really remember that too well. I know that for many years I have been looking for some decent adventure game engine as it seemed a suicide to make one by myself. I tried things like IndyJava, but I couldn't really make anything decent with that and other tools I found.

I found AGS for the first time when it was still relatively young. The first Larry Vales was freshly released then I think. Had a look at the engine, was too lazy to start learning it properly, and soon afterwards all my game-making ambitions lost focus to school for a few years.

I found out about it search for adventure games on Home of the Underdogs (RIP), and found the RON games.

Tried it, found I couldn't make a thing and forgot about it.

Then Bernie, who used to frequent the 'klik' scene (MMF and all that) as well, made a few adventure games in AGS, and I lurked about the forums a bit. Also, kept seeing it due to the Trilby games and the idea of being able to make a game like 1213 interested me.

Then I finally bit the bullet when AGS 3.x came out and found it was a lot nicer than the DOS days. Bingo!

Woo. Go AGS!  ;D

I was walking to school one day, and it was really cold so I zipped up my coat, but then my fingers started freezing. I immediately put my gloves on, but they didn't help much, so I decided it would be best to bring a scarf the next day. Upon returning home in the afternoon, I realized I didn't own a scarf. I searched Amazon for one, but then remembered that I'd rather not waste my money on a scarf, especially since my neck doesn't get cold anyway, just the lower part of my face.
The next day I was really bored and decided to Google "how to make an adventure game" and found AGS.
