Oh... I suspect we are on to something here thanks to Inspector Cassie...

The fact that she is in a garden lends itself to all kinds of poisonous plants causing her death.

But why did she try to defend herself against an invisible attacker is still an issue...

Hmmmmm...

Mrs. Atkinson was pottering about in the garden, in view of a neighbor. Suddenly she shrieked, and seemed to be struggling against an invisible foe. By the time the neighbor reached her, she was dead. How did she die?
[close]

Yes (nod)
Did someone kill her?
Did she die from any form of poisoning?
Did she know the killer?
Is the account or her death we read what actually happened? (i.e. Not just the neighbor's testimony.)
Was the poison administered shortly before the time of death?
Is the murderer human?* [Yes, but...]

Did she die due to an allergic reaction?
Did she suffer from hallucinations?
Was she on drugs at the time?
Did some kind of insects attack her?
Was she attacked by fire ants?

Did the poison in her system cause her to have hallucinations?

Was it some kind of gas?
Was a hose pipe involved?
Did the poison cause muscle spasms?
Did she kill herself?
Was she tasered?
Was the poison delivered by a plant?
Is the murderer human?* [Yes, but...]
Would she have died too, if she had not been in the garden at that time?

Has she been pregnant?

* Yes and No.

So, this question is in the YES list:

Was she killed by a single entity or a bunch (like a swarm)?

I'm assuming you are answering "YES" to the swarm part of the question?

Was a virus involved?
Was bacteria involved?
Did the toxin affect her brain?

Stupot

Haha I've realised one of my questions above was a tautology. Let me break them up:

Was she killed by a single entity?
Was she killed by a bunch of organisms (like a swarm)?

@Mandle beat me.
