Who of you is playing wordle?
I started playing a few weeks ago, but I clear my browser cache often, so I don't track my results over time. I think it's a nice challange and I enjoy learning new words. I usually play in regular mode but try to keep to the hard mode rules. This allows for the occasional win on the second guess. Only when I can't think of any more words that could fit (or too many, like still, skill, spill, etc) I use a word to exclude as many characters as possible.
Do you have a standard starting word? How do you play?
Today I got the word on second try :-D
I read somewhere that TRACE or CRATE are very effective starting words.
What are hard mode rules?
I use STARE.
Hard mode means that once you have figured out a letter, you have to use it in the following guesses. Which means you can't use two completely different words to check the most common 10 letters in your first two guesses.
Oh, I do that anyway, I thought it was the best strategy to get answers in the minimum time.
I play but I play on my language.
I learned how to do that share thing it has in both Android and JS, I am almost trying to do that in AGS... (roll)
The Brazilian version I play is named Termo: https://term.ooo/
Ah, I also found the page of one of the first ones in Basic in an old magazine scanned online.

Oh, I do that anyway, I thought it was the best strategy to get answers in the minimum time.
It's the best (in fact, only) way to get it on the
current guess, but it's usually the worst way to get in on the
next guess (or the one afterââ,¬Â¦), because you're not maximizing the amount of information you get from the guess if it doesn't turn out to be the right word. Maybe the clearest example is when you have four green, lacking one letter, like with WATCH the other day when people missed it because they kept trying BATCH, CATCH, HATCH, LATCH, MATCH, PATCHââ,¬Â¦ while e.g. CLAMP would eliminate four possibilities in one guess.
If you're trying to minimize your average number of guesses over many rounds of play (not the only way to play the game, for sure, but a reasonable metric for performance), you should only really try to guess the word once you are relatively confident (ideally 50%), or if the guess gives you a lot more information (you have a lot of yellow letters and you're not sure of where they go). The rest of the time you should (1) be searching for missing letters, (2) find the right position for the yellow letters (usually less important, but it depends on what they are and how many yellow and green you have).
Using this strategy and a good starting word (pair of words, rather), you have a very good chance to get it on the third or fourth guess, and you're almost guaranteed not to fail. You sacrifice the chance of getting it on the second guess except by extremely good luck (I've only got it once; LAPSE, where my first guess was LANES), but unless you're very lucky with your first word that's a low probability anyway.
I personally find hard mode/the "stick with what I know" approach not very interesting, since it reduces the game to almost pure guessing with very little strategy.
There's a version called Absurdle (https://qntm.org/files/absurdle/absurdle.html) that always gives you the "maximally unlucky" result of any guess. If you read the description of how it works, that should give you a good idea of the "optimal" way to play Wordle.
I also got today’s (272) in two goes. Got very lucky with my first guess
Wordle 272 2/6*
🟩⬛🟨⬛🟩
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
It’s only my third 2-guess win in 55 tries, but I so far have 100% win record.
I generally mix it up with my starting word but it always contains two vowels.
People keep calling this Josh Wardle guy the “inventor†of Wordle. But I’ve been playing this exact game with my students as a filler activity for at least 5 years now. I can’t even remember where I got it from but I’m kicking myself that I didn’t turn it into a web app and sell it to the New York Times for several million dollars.
I got today's in 2 as well. Yesterday's took me 6 for some reason... I had it when you have 4 letters but the remaining one could be any of several letters.
If anyone likes Wordle, try Quordle - much harder! You have 9 goes to guess 4 different words.
For me, the hard mode is much more interesting. The other way, where you try to get all the letters first is a very mathematical approach, but I enjoy the linguistic challenge of hard mode way better. I like to think about words - words that start with certain letters, end with letters, common collocations of letters (th, sh,..) and discover amazing things like that CATER and WATER are pronounced differently even though they have all letters but one in common.
I also play a German Wordle version and it plays differently. For example, words containing letters like B and G are excellent starters there.
I got hooked immediately after I learned what this was so thanks Cat :D Got today's word on my third try. Not too bad :D
The advantage is, that there is only one per day - you do not risk binging :)
I got it today on my 4th try (I've heard four is considered par, so it's fine). Interesting that my mind thought of ALLOY first.
Yeah that was a little weird actually! I feel an addiction coming. https://www.wordleunlimited.com if you want to play unlimited. Perfect while I'm waiting for my 3D renders to be finished :D
There is already a Wordle-clone called Murdle, but I still think that's a good name for a cash-in movie about a serial killer who sends taunting clues to the police and challenges the detectives to catch him by his sixth victim.
Phew...got it on my last try today :D
Awesome idea, Snarky - the ABC murders revisited.
Got it on 4th try today.
Got it in 2 for Wordle 275 today, and I'm quite happy about the process to get there, as it wasn't just a lucky guess but a fairly careful line of reasoning. (From 1 green and 2 yellow on first guess.)
I got 275 in 3 goes but I was also pretty pleased with how I got there.
I’ve just done 276 (it updates at midnight local time, so being in Japan means I get a bit of a head start). Took me 4 goes.
I’ve been playing the last few weeks, too. Have you guys ever lost one? I managed to get tripped up by RUPEE. :~(
@Stupot Putting us under pressure, eh? ;)
I got 275 in 3 as well, today.
@milkanannan I didn't get CAULK (never heard that word before, even though I have applied it myself in our bathroom), I don't remember if I got RUPEE. I got VIVID only with my 6th guess, but I think this was a fantastic word of the day - difficult, but not obscure.
It happened that I got the word without even knowing what it meant. English language is, in a way, quite predictable. I look up those words in a dictionary afterwards to learn something.
Got today's in 3, pretty happy with working it out from one correct letter and one in the wrong place.
I stopped with WORDLE a few weeks ago after playing daily for a month or so. lost interest somehow and the words got more and more obscure...
but if you want to play the same game but with style and independent of your knowledge of the english language and only want to think logically, try this:
https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1669-ags-mastermind/
:D
Today's (276) took me 6. I don't really think I made any serious mistakesâ€"I could have got it in 5, but that would have meant a risk of not getting it at all.
Spoiler
After guess 3, I had S_O_L or SLO__, and with the remaining letters it was down to SPOIL, SPOOL, SLOOP, SLOPS, SLOGS, SLOBS, SLOSH. I played 4: SPOIL, 5: SLOGS (because SLOSH, although IMO a more likely answer, would have left me to guess between SLOGS/SLOBS if wrong), 6: SLOSH.
I got it on my 5th, but I had no idea what the word is, it was just the only plausible combination with my remaining letters.
Got it on the last try! I also had no idea what that word meant :D

QuoteBefore the New York Times bought it, I was averaging closer to 3, suggesting maybe it has got harder since the buyout (although I hadn’t been playing it for long).
Well, all the solutions for the next 8 years or so are hardcoded into the game, and the only change NYT made was to remove a handful of words that were either potentially offensive ("slave", "pussy") or presumably considered too obscure ("agora", "pupal"). (Personally, while I understand why they've removed them as solutions, I think they should still be valid guesses.)
So any change in difficulty is almost certainly imagined or coincidental, unless Wardle designed a rising difficulty curve into the game originally.
277 took me 4. I made a mistake in my analysis that cost me one turn.
Got 277 on my 3rd. On the other hand, I lost the Austrian Wördl yesterday.

Rare that my starter word SUITE doesn't get a single hit! Next turn I realised I had no vowels at all to work with and it was a true 'oh crap' moment. (laugh)
I've been 4/6 every time since my last update, including today (281).
Spoiler
EPOXY was an interesting one. (I must admit I first thought it was a brand name/proper noun and thus not a valid word under Scrabble rules.) After three guesses I only had the O green and the E yellow, with E_O__ and __OE_ as possible formats, but having eliminated most common letters, there couldn't be that many possibilities. I came up with "epoxy" pretty quickly, but then spent a good deal of time assuring myself that I wasn't missing some other, better possibility.
Stupot, I don't think one 5/6 undoes two 2/6s in a row. Indeed, on an over/under relative to 4, you're still 3 under par!
milkanannan, the good thing about vowels is that there's got to be at least one, and if you've eliminated the most common ones that means the possible options are few. I like the starting word SERAI to knock out the top three. (Though I try to play different starting words for variety; today I started with INERT.) If that's a miss, you can pretty easily fit two out of O,U,Y in a second guessââ,¬â€or all three if you don't want to take a chance, e.g. YOUNG.
Lol, that was a funny one. I didn't get ANY letters in my first 2 guesses, but then managed to nail it with my 4th.
I went for EPOCH on my 4th go and so on my 5th EPOXY was probably the only possible option. Luckily Facebook’s algorithm has been providing my with epoxy resin videos for the past year or so, so I’m familiar with the word.

Yeah, I started off not playing in hard mode but enough people on Twitter said they considered it cheating that I changed it to hard mode. But in all honesty they’re just two different ways of playing. I don’t see “hard†mode as any harder than “easy†mode.

This could also go in the "What grinds my gears" thread. Wordle is not accepting LATIN as a valid word. I mean, sure, it's extinct and stuff, but I was learning this language 6 years at school and they say this is not supposed to be a word?
I think that’s because ‘Latin’ is a proper noun. My guess is they also won’t accept ‘Suomi’, but I’m going to try that as my starting word tomorrow, just in case they do.
In other news, I’ve had two 6-ers since my last post so my average is doomed.
[update] ‘Suomi’ wasn’t allowed.
Wordle is a bit inconsistent when it comes to languages and nationalities: Latin, Norse, Irish, Hindi/Hindu, Farsi, Slavs and Danes are blocked, but Dutch, Swiss, Swede (though that can also be a root vegetable), Anglo, Welsh, Gipsy/Gypsy, Greek, Turks and even India and Spain(!) are permitted.
I've played very averagely since last. 1x3, 1x5, 2x4.

Has anyone tried Wordlebot (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/upshot/wordle-bot.html)? It's a NYT feature that analyzes your Wordle games, telling you how good your guesses were at each turn and suggesting improvements.
For example, it tells me that today (Wordle 293), my second guess

was OK, but it would have been better to go with
Spoiler
TRACE,
which would have almost guaranteed a win in 3, while my guess could have left me with the possibilities

if I was unlucky. (I wasn't, and got it in 3.)

Too bad you have to be logged in to use it.
Got it on my second guess today :D
Got Wordle 294 in 3, which means I'm only two more of those away from getting my average down to 4.
Having now tried it a little, I have one criticism of Wordlebot: its strategy and recommendations are based on knowing exactly which words are possible solutions (a much smaller pool of words than the ones that are valid guesses). So the other day, for instance, it knew that the solution could not be BOYAR, even though that is a valid word, simply because it's not in the list of Wordle solutions. That's not something a human player could know for sure without cheating, and it affects the optimal strategy.

But I wasn't able to see it, and had to use my third to cut the search space instead.

My lowest-rated guess was my second one. I think it's because I have a tendency to overlook a certain letter.
Spoiler
I tend not to prioritize L very high, but after RTSN it is one of the most common consonants, and S is less common in Wordle than in English because it very rarely uses plurals or inflected verbs in the solution. So I played ASTER (for the S) when LATER would have been a better guess.
BTW, the skill rating in Wordlebot goes from 0 as "pass" (play a word you already tried) to 99 or 100 as the "optimal answer" (the one Wordlebot would have picked), measured in expected/average remaining steps to the solution given that guess. The luck rating measures whether the guess moved fewer or more steps closer to the solution than expected (averaged across all possible solutions, where 100 is the luckiest possible outcome and 0 the unluckiest possible; and 50 probably the expected outcome).
Bad news. I had a panic last night when my phone was on less than 1gb remaining. Went through deleting clearing data, deleting apps and, unfortunately, clearing my Safari cache.

My first two guesses were practically perfect, and left me with only six likely possibilities:
Spoiler
After CRANE and STALK, I was left with SHADE, SHAME, SHAPE, SHAVE, SPADE, SUAVE (though of these I overlooked SHAVE as a possibility).
Now I let myself be influenced by knowing that Stupot had lost the round, and did something stupid:
Spoiler
I went directly for what I thought was the least likely word using the most rare letters, SUAVE. Not only was this terrible strategically, since it gave me almost no information if not correct, it didn't even make sense as something that could have led to Stupot losing the round, since it's when there are many possible choices for one letter that hard mode becomes especially hard. Therefore the logical inference would have been that the answer was probably of the form SHA_E. The smart play here would have been something like DUMPS or HEMP, which would have guaranteed a win in 4.
After SUAVE didn't pan out I was left with SHADE, SHAME, SHAPE, SPADE, and got it on the second try. (Though again my first guess was not ideal: SPADE would have guaranteed a win in 5, which I didn't notice.)
It was a tricky one for such a normal word. Or perhaps
because it’s such a normal word.
Not until after pasting the below grid did it occur to me that my setting would have reset to easy mode (if someone’s on hard mode, it shows an asterisk).

And then Wordlebot points out that I somehow overlooked VOICE. If I had found that I would definitely have guessed it.
With today's game, my average is officially below 4.0!
I got 305 and 307 both with 3.
306 was a very nice word. It took me 5 guesses. It was one of those cases where you can't come up with a reasonable word for quite some time and think it must be a very obscure solution, only to realize that it is quite a common word but with an uncommon letter or letter combination.
Thanks to CaptainD I started to play Quordle from time to time. There, they have really obscure words. Luckily, once the puzzle is done (won or lost), all 4 words are linked to a dictionary so you can look them up and learn something. I like this a lot.
Got #307 in 2 for some reason.
I really like Quordle, I usually get all 4 words nowadays but sometimes it manages to defeat me. I can't imagine how difficult it would be when English isn't even your first language so I really admire anyone who does that!
here's my stats so far!

Those are some pretty crazy stats, Mouth. I mean, the chance of guessing it on the first word is less than 1/2000. Getting it twice in only 37 games is a massive coincidence.

CATER, WRITE, MERIT, INERT
After the first two guesses I had it down to MERIT, REMIT or INERT as plausibly valid solutions, with REFIT, RESIT, RELIT, and TIERS as dubiously valid ones (as it turns out, REFIT is on Wordle's list), and rejecting EFRIT as a non-standard spelling of ifrit/efreet. To ensure a win in four (unless it was one of the questionable ones) I had to pick MERIT or REMIT on 3. Unfortunately that was not it.

I had bad luck guessing between FAIRY/DAIRY/HAIRY and ended up with a 5 there. I was also annoyed that Wordlebot pulled down my score (after a literally perfect game up to that point, with 99/100 Skill on each of the previous turns) for guessing LARCH over LARVA, because LARCH doesn't happen to be one of the Wordle solutions. Well, sorr-ee! On the other hand, I did really need to spend an extra turn on FORGO even though it was the only remaining possibility just because I couldn't come up with it, so that wasn't so good.

Yeah, that even made it into the news here. Weird.
I got it in 3 tries a few times recently :)
The most incredible revelation is that the whole thing is all static. I thought there was a server that provided the word of the day, but there isn't. All words from now to eternity are visible in the page JavaScript code.
Like, it could be done in AGS and use DateTime. Now to provide the word from a string array and be the same.
Today was interesting, because as long as I've played I don't remember encountering non-infinitiv forms of verbs. In quordle (expecially in pratice mode) there are tons of them, though. It took me 4 tries today.
4 here as well!

I've been recently tasked with coming up with a similar game to Wordle during my JavaScript course, i did wonder how the word of the day had been implemented, this brings some interesting ideas.
It’s been a mixed bag for me. I’ve stopped keeping track of my overall average but it’s well over 4. I’ve had way too many 5s and 6s in the last few weeks.
I was happy with today’s (#328) result though: 3 guesses.

PARER is a bullshit word, anyway.
I haven't really enjoyed Wordle since I switched to hard mode and NYT made Worldebot subscriber-only, and I haven't been playing regularly. I still feel that in hard mode the element of strategy is almost gone, and there's little to do but just type in the first word you think of that fits. Like today, what's the difference between you getting it in 4 or not at all except luck?
Quordle is fun, though. I'm still trying to get a game in 5.
Over at https://wordfeud.aasmul.net/Default.aspx , the home of wordfeud league of honor and several spin-off leagues (mostly quiz games, but also chess and yatzy and others), there's now recently established a league in a Wordle-like game. I'm currently playing in the Norwegian and the English league.
It's called Ordlek (literally "word-game"), presumably to avoid trademark infringement. The way it goes, is that I go to my table page, then click a link to open up a wordle-like game. I play it and get points according to how many attempts I had to use to solve it. Now, my opponent in the match can also play the same game with the same solution. When both have played, I can see the opponents attempts, and the result is entered into the table automatically. If you do not play in the allotted time (I think two or three days), you will be scored a zero in that match.
In other words, instead of one solution per day, like in NYC wordle, there is one solution per match. The words are drawn from the most commonly used words in their forum, in addition to five-letter words available in the Wordfeud dictionary (which is basically Scrabble on a cell phone app, if you've never heard of it). A season lasts 14 days, and I get about 10-12 opponents a season. It's still in the early stages, so there's bound to be some bugs. If you want try solving a puzzle for fun, go to the site, then to the Ordlek English table, and click on the link underneath to go to the match. As you aren't signed up, you will get to train and solve wordle puzzles without an opponent.
I tried a quick game and the solution (which I could only find with a helper tool) was "JOHNS" - which seems to be only a name and not a real word. On the other hand, it didn't recognize "JOINS" as word.

Could be a bug, of course. It definitely should recognize "joins". "Johns" could be plural form of "John", which could mean a toilet or a prostitute customer, and possibly other things I don't know.

STARE, COULD, PINKY - those are the words I usually use as starting words for Quordle
Something that just occurred to me is that one thing that helps make the game a lot easier is that English generally abhors consonant doubling at the end of words, even though it does use it elsewhere to indicate short vowels. I think the only ones you get in any halfway-normal word are L ("skull"), S ("bless"), F ("stiff"), and Z ("jazz"). Most others are reduced to just one (flag not flagg, cop not copp, bed not bedd, etc.)—if they occur at the end—while double K is instead spelled CK.
This greatly reduces the possibility space for consonant clusters at the end of words. You can often deduce that one of the last two spaces must be a vowel because there is no possible way to fill them with the remaining consonants.
True, and after playing for a while you quickly get a feel for what consonant clusters are possible.
I sometimes will choose a word that could eliminate multiple clusters in one turn. For example let's say I have _ _ A _ _. I might try "shack" because not only does it eliminate ck at the end, but also sh (which is common at the beginning and end of words, as well as within). Plus using the S can eliminate all of the many clusters which use that letter.
As for today's puzzle:

Yeah, that's the thing I don't like in hard mode, that it comes down entirely to luck. Though in that case I think there were only three plausible possibilities, so at least there was no risk of failing.

Never heard of Ponce de Leon. That's the disadvantage with this game, if you don't know a person, you will never figure out the name, even if you guess the rest of the article correctly.

It's been a while since I played Wordle, but I recently started playing the NYT's other game,
Connections. It's a bit more right-brain than Wordle: since the connection in a group can be anything, you have to use more creativity and leaps of intuition.
In some sense it's an easier game, but it's quite often that I can't figure out what the connection is in the final group (that you get for free by process of elimination).
