We hold a trivia quiz on IRC every Saturday (3 PM London time / midnight Melbourne time)

There are no prizes, but plenty of friendly competition! It's loads of fun!

We usually have five or six competitors, but we'd love to have more.

The majority of the trivia database comes unchanged from the 90s. There are questions about West Germany, 1950s music (for the baby boomers) and plenty of scientific research that's since been disproven. Babar's been working on modernising our database, but until that's complete, we're considering it part of the challenge.

Anyway, please drop by. The quiz is due to start in about two hours from the time of this post.

#ags IRC Trivia will be happening again today! Join us at 3 PM London time / midnight Melbourne time for some pub-style trivia with some terribly outdated questions and random Steam keys for prizes!

1st prize: Steam key
2nd prize: Lesser Steam key
3rd prize: Even lesser Steam key

Last week, Matt took the top prize, with Babar coming in second place.

We have a very relaxed atmosphere. Feel free to pop open a beer for that authentic pub-trivia experience. Perhaps let a few cigarettes smoulder while you spill a beer on the carpet. How far you take it is up to you!

The quiz will start in roughly eight hours from now, and it usually goes for about 90 minutes (or longer, depending on demand). You don't have to be there for the whole thing. You can just drop by to say hello for five minutes if you like. Prizes will be given out at the end of the trivia session. Use this link to see your local start time:

Note: Jumping into trivia could be a bit confusing, especially if you miss the start, so I thought I'd give a mini trivia tutorial.

Each question starts with Roger announcing the question and the first clue.

<Roger> (       ) For 32 points
<Roger> Question: What is the capital of Norway?
<Roger> 1st Clue: **** (120 seconds remaining)

You have two minutes in total for each question. The first clue tells you the number of letters in the answer. Answers are case insensitive, but you need to be sure to include any punctuation.

The second clue happens at the 60 second mark and usually gives away the first two letters, e.g.:

<Roger> 2nd Clue: Os** (60 seconds and 16 points remaining)

Note: The number of points given goes down with each successive clue.

Finally, if nobody's got it when there are 30 seconds remaining, there's a third clue with a good portion of the remaining letters revealed:

<Roger> 3rd Clue: Os*o (30 seconds and 8 points remaining)

When someone answers correctly, s/he gets awarded however many points were remaining and we move on to the next question.

EDIT - good fun to be had by all, to the repeated cries of "rigged!" and "UK bias!" :-D.  Glad I didn't disgrace myself, managed to come second to the all-conquering Matt.

Yes, the standard thing in trivia is to claim people cheated or "haxxed" when they answer a question quickly. UK bias is another common claim, especially in the case of Matt. Speaking of which, Matt won't be joining us for trivia this week, so everyone should have a better chance of getting a prize!

For reference, Google is banned, but we play with an honour system. Remember, if you cheat and use Google, you're only cheating yourself. That dodgy Steam key you win will feel hollow.

FSi came out of nowhere and blitzed it.

FSi won "Abyss Odyssey", which sounds a lot like Abe's Oddyssey, but isn't.
ibispi took home "Enemy Mind", which sounds a lot like that movie, Enemy Mine, but isn't.
