Guess the object, if you're correct post one for us to guess and so on.
Rules may change as we progress..
Here's a guess (try to be as precise as possible):
is it a crucible of some kind? Cant make out the scale of it, perhaps one for creating toy lead soldiers or fantasy pieces?
It's a little smaller than your usual coffee cup ;-D
umm, im stumped ... hows about a hint! is this related to preparing food/consumables in anyway? is that thing at the bottom a hollow spout or a solid protrusion of some kind (hard to tell form the photo)
It's not related to food or consumables. The spout is not hollow. This was used for fun.
A cup for jacks?
ok this is going to be a wild guess, but based on the background image you used, the fact you said it was used for fun, the seemingly burnt looking innards, and its seemingly vintage age.
Is it a retainer to safely ignite gun powder, perhaps it was used by people to trigger fireworks/powder or something, the protrusion being an end to attach a stick/handle for safe distance?
a wild guess though heh
Um, sorry to jump again, Jack gave me the idea its possibly a die roller? er.. a thing you put dice into then shake?
an ancient pipehead

lol.. ah didn't honestly think it was that, nice.. ok here is the next one
For some the function of this might be obvious, however I am looking for its specific historical application too, I shall dispense some hints if people are struggling.
It actually looks like a BB-8. :=
some gyroscope like thing?
yes, but from where?
Here is a hint, some of them where ""delivered"" to some cites in England, much to England's displeasure at the time.
EDIT: hehe, indeed Gilbert, has a striking resemblance to BB-8 :D
Ordnance dropped from aircraft?
nope
hint: Doodlebug's younger brother
it was a gyro from a v2 rocket
over to you selmiak
huh, so what is this then?

um, looks like a serial port on the top there, i see a volume slider, and 3 small holes on the device itself, perhaps this is an old audio sampler for computers that can also record voices?
or maybe some wahwah pedal or something like that...
wrong, wrong.
is the device related to some sort of voice activation function, such as security?
Nope!
External soundcard, or some fidelity enhancer?
The three dots at the top look like they could be a microphone. It resembles some kind of pedal. But the knob looks more like some kind of gain rather than volume given the symbols. It also looks like it maybe has a VGA port.
So some kind of handheld magnifier or scanner?
a USB hub? Some Signal converter?
is it a thing to give an electric shock
selmiak is too close!
So it is some kind of signal converter.
Audio to bits+bytes?
a pocket transformer?
DC to AC? (to CD?)
why do you censor so much, I post a black image next and you have to guess what it could be :P
Looks vaguely like a composite/s-video/rca to vga convertor https://rukminim1.flixcart.com/image/832/832/jj0bbm80/selector-box/e/6/z/smacc-av-to-vga-composite-video-tv-vga-s-video-composite-rca-av-original-imaf6ghhhutcm3et.jpeg?q=70 but definitely only vaguely.
So... 'CD', and two ports that look like they could be 3.5mm. So possibly some kind of audio convertor with a strange output. Not any kind of phono amp. Still think that looks like a vga.
Maybe... audio to video (i.e. spectograph/waveform?)? Something for splitting a combined video/audio input into VGA and 3.5mm?

RS232 to Ethernet?
well, to be honest i was pretty stumped, had a bit of luck with google image searches with an exact search term "pocket signal converter serial port" first result looked quite similar
https://www.superdroidrobots.com/images/TE/TE-079-001.jpg
Galen brought it home though, well done
Curious about the volume slider thing on it though?
I was expecting a "Pocket dial up modem" but I guess signal converter will do as well.
The slider is used to tighten/loosen the screws..

[imgzoom]http://techtroupe.net/posted/mysteryBox_01.jpg[/imgzoom]
Pretty easy.
Bottle opener?
No
Looks like something related to a rotary engine?
The camshaft rotor(?) from a wankle engine, right? That rounded triangular shape (a reuleaux triangle) rotates around in a square-shaped motion.
Correct. Very lively little motor. Timed explosions on both ends send it around that cylinder in an eccentric fashion, eliminating a lot of parts and kinetic loss compared to a reciprocating engine. Only problem still is the seals on the corners wearing out faster than a normal engine.
dayowlron and Galen could have a race to see who's next.
looks like a 3D render of some weird wheelbarrow, a wheelbarrow that transports corn and flour comes out at the end or so :)
probably selmiak is right, some kind of a cattle driven mill?
nope, not even close :-D
A "seeder"? One to spread seeds over a field?
nope cassie, im afraid now, you are still some distance away from the correct answer
hint ;)
Is that a hint I detect? Is it a device used for measuring distance by dropping a small item every so often? How many beans am I from correct?
A torture device?
koos got it
"An odometer, that is, a device for measuring distance. This is an old design, improved by Leonardo Da Vinici. As you rolled along, a peg would turn the upper wheel at a set distance. When the upper wheel turned a complete rotation, a ball would drop into a box. Walk the distance of whatever you're measuring, and you can count the balls to know how far it is. "
It's Jack's favourite sex toy!
or just a ball bearing...
Nope.
The image basically tells you what it does, but I'll add another hint.
It's not a ball bearing but it is the same inventor as the ball bearing, and a lot of other things.
a thing to regular heat/cooling in a water pipe
.....
No.
Here's an image that even mores tells what it does.
So what it is is a type of transmission which smoothly goes from underdrive to overdrive, invented by Leonardo da Vinci. Our materials tech tree is still not developed enough to completely replace step-type gear transmissions in high torque applications like cars, but there is a company that makes these for bicycles and some other uses. It's quite revolutionary.
Ein video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN8CCY1vFC8).
Next turn to whoever can come up with something easier.
Ok let's try this:
a "box" for pills?
close, but wrong.
A tub for camera film?
no it's not even close.
A Jar of cream?
Or is it upside down?
So 'tub' is far off, but either 'box' or 'pills' is close?
The worlds most intimidating suppository? :P
The foot of the couch it is placed on?
lol not a suppository!
All wrong so far (laugh)
Pot.
is it a retainer for false teeth or contact lenses?
All wrong.
Here's another one:
I guess that "do not eat" is about the contents, not the container, something like the silica gel that comes with new shoes?
You're right!
It's a little silica gel container that was inside a medicine bottle.
Let's see what you got C.L.I.C.K. (laugh)
This might be very easy.

A kiln for baking pottery?
bathroom?
The entrance to an ice house, perhaps?
None correct so far... Though... I'm sure some have used it as a bathroom at one point or another. (roll)
A type of hut?
An airwell?
I need a specific function josiah. :-D A "type of hut" is too broad.
Maybe I was too optimistic about how easy it would be... but keep them committing, I'm sure one of you will either see what it is, or randomly guess right. (laugh)
If it helps, it's my own private photo taken years ago. I just though I needed to have it. ;-D
a chapil?
A specific type of hut?
A guard post?
AnasAbdin, nope.
Uhm... maybe it was at one time Jack, can't say for sure. Not what is used for now a days though.
I'll let a couple more guesses come, otherwise I'll accept your version and say what is used for now.
A telescope/photography platform?
It's not that big, just look at the door opening... ;)
Think I have seen one of those before but dont remember where or what it was, but I am going to guess an entrance to a storm cellar?
There's only the expected size in there... not a Dr.Who kind of small on the outsize big on the inside. (laugh)
Also, there's only empty space inside... maybe a built in bench. ;)
As there doesn't seem to be other guesses. I'll let Jack take the turn with his "Guard post"...
It's a bus stop. (laugh)
Maybe it would have been more obvious if I had included the road on my photo... (roll)
How many people fit in there? A single-person bus stop seems rather overkill.
Also, if you sit in there you presumably can't see the bus coming.
Design fail.

Yes, there's only place for 1 maybe 2 people inside.
I'm guessing they maybe just reused it as a bus stop and was originally built for something like a Guard post, or just a weather shelter by the road, in case of bad weather.

Hmm I think Stupot's in-laws are Japanese, so I'm going with an eraser for traditional Japanese ink writing?
It is indeed a typewriter rubber and brush. Well done to Cassie :-)

If there is a thread like this around in 100 years I bet someone will show a photo of a pencil for everyone to guess.
An elegant weapon for a more civilised age.
lol
Come to think it actually makes sense to have the brush. You can't use the back of your hand to clean paper after you erased on a typewriter.
Anyone feel free to jump in, since I have nothing.

OK now I have questions. (laugh)
(Nope, not a bull castrator!)
Hehe flashback to that scene from Funny Farm:
Can/bottle opener?
Bent knife?
Nope!

Actually, you’re not far off with this one. Can you identify a specific use with a specific food?
Im thinking something like an apple peeler or to remove corn from the cob.
