Great British humour, nice pixel art, and puzzles that are just challenging enough, the only downside is that there's no background music or ambiance, but otherwise a fun experience.
Very funny trip down memory lane to the 96 Euro. Recommended short game!
GOC Games' "Three Lions" is a fantastic entry in the June 2025 MAGS competition, perfectly embodying the "Home Country" theme with its distinctly English setting. The game plunges you straight into the electric atmosphere of Wednesday, June 26th, 1996, as the UEFA European Championships Semi-Final between England and Germany is about to kick off at Wembley Stadium. The catch? You had a ticket, and now you must embark on a whimsical quest, using your wits to overcome conspiring events and make it to the match.
The game immediately pulls you in with a brilliant intro, showcasing images and results from England's journey to the Semi-Final, effectively immersing you in the nostalgic Euro '96 vibe. Visually, "Three Lions" is a treat; the pixel art is truly beautiful. Iconic scenes like Wembley Stadium and a back-alley adorned with posters of Oasis and Trainspotting truly bring the setting to life.
One of the game's standout features is its hilarious dialogue, brimming with a distinct British sense of humor that fans of games like "Broken Windows" will appreciate. The writing is sharp, witty, and consistently entertaining. Furthermore, for a MAGS game developed within a month, "Three Lions" is surprisingly expansive, featuring quite a few locations and characters.
While the game excels in many areas, it is a very quiet experience. There are occasional sound effects, but for the most part, you'll find yourself playing without background music or ambient sounds.
Despite the quiet atmosphere, "Three Lions" is an impressive game for a MAGS contribution and comes with a strong recommendation. It's a delightful, humorous, and well-crafted adventure that captures a specific moment in English football history with charm and wit.
For those curious to follow along on the quest for the lost ticket firsthand, I've created a full playthrough of "Three Lions" on my YouTube channel. You can watch it here.
You don't need to be a football/soccer fan to enjoy this great game. I love the humour and the puzzles.
