The AGS Panel is a team of AGS forum veterans who play all of the games here, and give them ratings from one to five cups. The rating system is as follows:
1 Cup Not serious entertainment
2 Cups A reasonable game, worth a try
3 Cups A good game, worth playing
4 Cups A great game, well worth your time
5 Cups An outstanding, must-play game!
Feel free to disagree with the panel's rating, and please don't be offended if you think your game has been underrated!

(Why has my game been rated 1 cup?)

Close window
If your game has been rated 1 cup, please don't be offended! It's common for your first game release to get a 1-cup rating, due to the game having a lack of polish and flair -- which is understandable, because you're just getting started!

Please understand that the main purpose of the ratings is to help potential game players find high quality, bug-free games to play. You've probably learnt a lot about AGS as a result of making your first game -- so why not use that knowledge to start afresh, and do even better with your next game!

About this game

"King's Quest IV Retold" is a point-and-click remake of the fourth chapter in Sierra's classic King's Quest series.

The game's story picks up immediately where "King's Quest III: To Heir Is Human" left off. As King Graham tosses his adventurer's cap to his children, he suffers a massive heart attack and is left on his death bed. It is up to his daughter, Princess Rosella, to retrieve a rare magic fruit that can heal her father, as well as save the land of Tamir from the evil fairy Lolotte along the way.

This remake introduces numerous improvements to the original game while staying faithful to its story and graphics, thus offering a new way to experience this classic adventure and making it more approachable for new players.

The control is good but you lack one important thing. Your game still has the EGA dithering pass. If only you could move that one thing I would find it great.

This is a great improvement on the original, with point and click rather than text parser.

Hi, DrSlash. Do you have the source code of this game. How did you code the changes? Did you use scicompanion (http://scicompanion.com/)? Great remake! Thanks.

A tremendous achievement! It's full of KQ IV's original charme and character, puzzle design and experience but manages to carefully adapt the game to a more modern audience by eliminating the Sierra typical ways to get stuck in deadends.
Technically it enhances the experience by adding the best possible soundtrack and even background sound from the Amiga version.
Overall an absolute pleasure to play and for me one of the best games that have ever been released in the AGS engine.

Clearly this is a vast improvement over the original. Dead ends and time limit are eliminated, and it's "translated" into point and click. It's still the same game and puzzles, though, and you still will die if you aren't successfully climbing a staircase.

This is fun to play for historical or nostalgic reasons, but while this version is a stunning technical achievement, it also shows how much the genre has evolved since the original came out in terms of game design, storytelling and puzzles. Sierra were pioneers, and as such were the ones who created the genre through trial and error. It's easy to criticize in hindsight. Still, I'd say this is not a timeless classic, but a classic that shows its age.
