AGS Engine | Translations | Translation support: Chinese / Japanese |
---|---|---|
Radiant | I would like to request support for translations into Chinese as well as Kanji (the Japanese alphabet with ~2000 characters). This would include reading Unicode files for translation (currently the functions only work on ASCII). It is entirely acceptable if this works with TTF fonts only, not WFN. | |
Crimson Wizard |
the existing string/print/font functionality should already be able to print this.
How can you tell this? ??? AGS has one-byte string logic everywhere, most importantly when calculating string length. Unless you have some trick in mind... | |
Radiant | I thought that came standard with the .NET package, but I may well be wrong about that :) | |
Crimson Wizard |
I thought that came standard with the .NET package, but I may well be wrong about that :)
I am pretty much sure Editor can load and display Unicode characters, but the engine does not use .NET, it is uses standard C++ library. This would require rewriting and rechecking everything string-related. | |
Radiant | Ok, let's file that under version 5.4738 then :) | |
Wyz | Just a note: UTF-8 is fully backwards compatible with ASCII (hence also with null-terminated strings); it would be possible to encode all strings in use into UTF-8 without breaking other aspects of the engine. There are however side effects like hardcoded string displays (which would show weird characters) and string manipulation on UTF-8 encoded strings with regular functions (which yields incorrect results). Quite likely hairy but not impossible I'd say. :) |
