Every museum has to be guarded. Whether it's by cute women, or lazy fat men is all up to you.

Rules:

  • 1.80m = 25% of the Y-screen resolution
  • Maximum colours: 10 (6 for high-res imagesnon-pixelart not including shading and anti-aliasing)
  • AGS compatible

For bonus points (to increase your chances of winning):

  • Make the guard non-Caucasian
  • Multiple entries are allowed

Have fun, and I hope to see some nice and original entries.

Ps. Adding a background is allowed, as long as you also provide the sprite sans-background.

What's that with Caucasian museum guards?   :-\ Have you seen too many of those?

EDIT: hmm, wait, by "Caucasian" do you mean the guy from Caucasus Mountains, or the white guy?
I checked my dictionary and it shows that "Caucasian" could mean european sort of human as well :)

Caucasian = "white" person, that's what it usually means in English. This is not as confusing as "Magazine" though, but far more widespread in russian texts as a mistranslation.

arj0n

To be exactly:

Caucasian aka Europid/Europoid includes:

Europe,
North Africa,
The Horn of Africa (Northeast Africa: Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Somalia),
West Asia,
Central Asia,
South Asia.

So not specifically 'white people', it's more like 'white people' (Europeans) and 'lighter-skinned people' (the others mentioned above)

Anyway, have phun spriting peops ;)

Yes, I believe that people from the Caucasus Mountains are vastly overused in adventure-games... ;)

My goal was for people to look beyond the general western-European look. But as Arj0n mentioned, Caucasian is strictly speaking more than merely 'white dudes'. But in short: the less European, the better :)

Bonus points for racism?  AWESOME.  I shall draw a big fat black man with one of those magnalite flashlights.  Maybe.

Al_Ninio

I wonder if it would seem as alright to you if someone wrote "bonus points: the character should not be black"

... But I see your point. :D
I might participate this time, we shall see!

racism:
S: (n) racism (the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other races)
S: (n) racism, racialism, racial discrimination (discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race)

Since the bonus points are neither discriminatory or abusive, nor do they claim that one race is superior to another, there is nothing racist about it. Rather, I observed that most people draw characters with a western European look. If asking people to look at/investigate people of different cultures and races makes one a racist then I apparently don't understand the concept. Because I would think that the fact that most people draw 'white' characters might easier be explained as them believing that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities ... (although I don't believe that they do!).

So no, you don't get any bonus points for racism...you get bonus points for looking beyond a certain race. If you - or anyone else - can't look beyond the stereotypes of said races, then that's beyond my control. But stereotypes won't be rewarded by me, because they lack creativity.

[end of rant]

Edit: changed a line

IndieBoy

Ok...
I don't understand why people are kicking up a fuss about not drawing the usual "white guy" character. Secondly, I don't understand why in a competition you would get more "points" for drawing another race than Caucasian.
Not to sound like a moderator but:
Have your little race row somewhere else. Post your entries that fit the rules and the best sprite wins. Done.

On topic:
I might put something together for this one.

Well, technically he\she\it's non-caucasian....

Tired of cat-burglars snatching priceless artefacts, or just sick of schoolchildren chewing gum close to priceless works of art? The solution is Eddie. A reliable and fully programmable employee to act as tour guide, nursery attendant, and nightwatchman. Eddie also mounts a small arsenal of heavy weapons to ensure your staff never have to spend time cleaning vomit off a priceless statue again!*

*Your experience of model ED-13 may differ from that advertised, possible scenarios include mechanical failure, god-complex, chicken impersonations, and the destruction of everything in a 6 block radius. Please read the manual before contacting our helpdesk.

This wasn't a jibe at the bonus rules, it's just where my mind went.

Edit:- sized for 320x240. It's supposed to take up half the screen, because that's half the fun....

Here is museum curator Nathaniel P. Wilson, charged with watching over the relics of the Zombie Wars.  Unfortunately, some of those relics are still biting, so it's Nate's job to keep the chained up zombies away from the good folk by force (if he's lucky).

loominous

Albert R. Murrows in yet another successful interaction with a visitor.

Looking for a writer

Three entirely different entries in three entirely different universes.

I short, I liked each of the entries for different reasons. Victor's ED13 was a great interpretation of the theme. Loominous' Albert R. Murrows has great character, and ProgZmax's Nathaniel P. Wilson has great details and a very interesting back-story. I think each of the three entries is of a high quality, and deserves to win. But looking at them from a game-perspective, I think Nathaniel is a great main character, in a very 'nice' post-ZombieWar-world.

I know the rules didn't state that the sprite had to be the main character, but I had to base my decision on something. So ProgZ, you're the winner of this Jam.

Edit: Removed some text...but the winner is still the same (and that's what counts) ;)

Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens

Yay, and I will adapt Nathan's world to the next jam!
