I mean, seriously, have they actually...

Spoiler
got ANOTHER Death Star in this thing?  Or do you think that snapshot at 0:50 was just a red herring?

(EDIT - silly me, I hadn't realised this actually takes place between episodes 3 and 4, I'd been thinking this was ep.8!  Duh...)

Considering it takes place before A New Hope, then it's probably the original Death Star.

So yes... they're still doing the Death Star thing.

Ah... thank you for that, I actually hadn't realised when it was set.

Okay I take it back! ;)

What surprises me the most is that they obviously visited the AGS boards to get some inspiration for this movie!

Here is my (long-dead) GiP thread for Rebel Spy. Take notice that it was from March of 2003 and hasn't been edited.

Now the concept of showing the rebels that stole the Death Star plans isn't too hard to come up with but I called (came up with on my own) the planet the Death Star was being built over Despayre (despair, the opposite of hope)... that's what they now call the planet in Rogue One. Exact same spelling too.

I will concede it's possible the planet was called that in canon before I thought of the name for my game but it seems awfully unlikely to me. I tried to find the first known usage of it (in canon) but couldn't really find anything conclusive. I found a few things about it being called something else previously (in games, etc) but that it was listed as "in error" and now it's called Despayre.

Now I'm not asking for much... just a writing credit on Rogue One would be nice (nod)

That gripe aside I am really looking forward to the movie. That scene (in the trailer) with the AT-ATs was so cool!

If I had to take a guess, one of the writers probably saw that thread a long time ago and he unknowingly used elements from it years later, despite not remembering it. Things like that influence us all the time.

Still, it's pretty impressive they used one of your ideas. Whether or not it was intentional.

It seems it was first mentioned as far back as 1991 in the Death Star Companion. It was only in a couple of instances that it got confused with the system name:

Yeah but I think, as near as I can tell, all references to it before Revenge of the Sith (2005,after my thread) refer to it as Horuz. It wasn't until they were going to show it at the end of ep3 that it would have been referred to as Despayre. Unless I'm reading that wrong.

I think you are reading it wrong; the article is written rather ambiguously, but at the end they clearly differentiate the two occasions where it was named Horuz from all the others. I think what they mean is that if it had been named in ROTS, they would have continued using the EU name Despayre.

EDIT: I fell down the Star Wars rabbit hole and came across this mention of the planet name in 2002 on a forum:

I was never into the expanded universe so not sure what was what before the Disney era but are they seriously calling the planet Despayre? It's a bit naff, frankly.

I thought the trailer was ace, really looking forward to the film!

It's going to completely freak everyone out if there turns out to be a character called Darth Mandarb in this movie!! :-D :-D (roll)

Well that's the first time I have seen something definitively refer to it as Despayre before my reference. Even if it's not "canon".

It's odd because I can't find another reference that specifically states the first time the name was used (officially) and I very specifically remember coming up with the name on my own.  Oh well... I still think they stole my idea. I will concede the [very tiny and remote] possibility that I came up with it on my own by subconsciously remembering having read it previously but, given how hard it is to find a case of "first reference", I don't think that likely.

Wouldn't surprise me since they yanked all my other ideas as well (nod) :D

Here it is in the X-Wing game from 1993 (about 34 seconds in):

I'm not sure why "finding a case of first reference" (if you distrust that wiki) matters or really what it means.

It's not that hard to understand. I want to know if they stoleborrowed my idea.

That YouTube vid is the first case (assuming it was not an updated version of the game after 2003) where I see it in something by Lucas Arts pre-2003.

I still think it's a global conspiracy where they've gone back and altered the data in the past to cover their tracks.

How about using the Wayback machine to see if it comes up on old web pages?

Nah, I think that does it.

Anyway, I think that trailer looks quite good but not as exciting as the TFA one was.

I remember Kyle Katarn was supposed to steal the Death Star plans back in the "Dark Forces" video game.
I guess they are rewriting the history now.
Then again, I had never paid enough attention to the whole canon/not canon thing, so I might be surprised for no reason.

Darth Mandarb

I think Disney has said they are not taking anything EU into account with their new movies.

I can't say I blame them.

I liked a small portion of the EU but I thought most of it was not-so-good.

I am actually finding myself really pumped for Rogue One.

It's nice to see my idea realized in movie form! Also; it's great to see the Star Wars (time era) I grew up with back with modern effects. I'm also quite intrigued (if a tad saddened) to hear the first Star Wars movie not scored by John Williams.

Having grown up with the Jedi Knight series, Kyle Katarn is the only guy from the expanded universe that I know, and as such, the only guy I want to see appear (at least in name) in this rebooted universe.

It would be so awesome if they got the same actor as well.
Sigh, it's just too bad that I know it'll never happen.
