Today I tried the pick of the month game Cougar Quest for a Freedom. When I run it the error appears:

Are you familliar what kind of driver I have to install. I installed the original video card driver but the error still appears.

SSH

Use the "run in a window" option in  setup.exe

Is this your solution? I want to play it in full screen. The "Windows" interface distracts me.

Use Setup.exe and change the resolution to 640x80 or higher possible. I think you mentioned an awareness of this function in another thread. I wouldn't try alternate graphics drivers, that could only cause trouble.

Bai Karl

Thank you, Ali. This works for me and for the gamers that are using the forum. But the sad is that others will not ask in the forum like me. They will close and will delete the game. Thats why are my postings about 320x200! Too much attention for this resolution that new video cards don't support.

The best way to play 320 games on modern hardware is using windowed and the x3 filter or fullscreen and the x2 filter.
Changing the resolution might screw with certain graphical stuff like fonts and character scaling (that's why that option was removed recently).

Developers should mention this in their readme and publish the game with an acsetup.cfg already set to one of the two settings.

See, 320 games causes more and more problems :)

Then don't play them :)
And a search for "can not set video mode" would have led you to the solution in a matter of seconds, btw :)

Bai Karl

You are right! I will not play them. I will find something in hi res. Unfortunately there is no option for searching by resolution. I have to browse all games.

Hi there, Stan.

Fact is that 320x200 (or 240) is the resolution of choice for almost anyone. Character animation and spriting in general is easier to do, and the file size is okay even for a large game.

Then there is this thing called manual or read.me, where most people these days explain how to set up the game. Many graphic cards, mine included, do no longer support 320x200, and heck, it's easy to switch to a filter. CJ has even made some changes in AGS to adapt to this.

I really don't understand your fixation on hi res. In more than one thread you seem to judge the actual game quality on the number of pixels on your screen. Nothing wrong with that, by why raising Cain here?

And hell, not playing gems like Apprentice and KG1 just because you need to change a tiny setting, that's like refusing to eat a tasty candy bar because you need to tear open the wrapper.

Please Stan, this is the Technical forum and is not the place to talk whether a resolution is good for games or not. If you fail to keep on topic I may just lock this thread. :P

Well, there is a technical issue here in that AGS should automatically try 640x400 if the player's PC doesn't support 320x200. The latest version does do this, but the game in question was made in 2004 when AGS didn't do this because it wasn't such a problem.

Domino

I get the same message, but as long as I can still play the game, I really do not mind.
